Armenian culture B.C. experienced the strong influence of the Shoumer and Accadian cultures. These cultures especially influenced the development of fine arts, cuneiform, even the first Armenian language-Aramian, which was almost completely lost until A.D. At that time people could build beautiful towns, they were skillful craftsmen and they were able to make beautiful things from various processed metals, particularly iron and bronze. Urartian people had various myths and legends, unfortunately those were lost within the time. Also Armenians built a lot of temples dedicated to gods, which were very much like the Hellenistic temples or pantheons. Last updated: 15 Nov 02

Armenia which is located between the East and the West was the place of collisions between great empires of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Romans, Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, and Mongols crossed Armenia and destroyed it interrupting its cultural development leaving behind nothing but the smoking ruins. Having managed to resist each of the powerful newcomers, the people have saved fidelity to their culture which nevertheless underwent some changes. As a result the national culture of Armenia acquired some features characteristic to both eastern and western civilizations.
Until 301 the culture of Armenia had developed under two influences - western (Hellenism) and eastern (Parthia). However, these influences only supplemented and enriched the national culture.
The culture of Christianity started to develop when the king Trdat III in 301 years forbade the heathenism and proclaimed Christianity as the official religion of the state, and this influenced many developments in Armenian culture, and specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsimeh, Gayaneh and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture, Zvartnots.

... Tavush The originality and uniqueness of Armenia rests on three pillars – the unique charm of its mountainous nature, the ancient Christian heritage ( Armenia was among the first countries to adopted it) and its original national culture. It is the main treasure of Armenia which it has managed to preserve in spite its dramatic history. Armenia which is located between the East and the West was the place of collisions between great empires of antiquity and the Middle Ages. Rome , Iran , Byzantium , Arabs, Seljuks, Mongols crossed Armenia and destroyed it interrupting its cultural development leaving behind nothing but the smoking ruins. Having managed to resist each of the powerful newcomers, the people have saved fidelity to their culture which nevertheless underwent some changes. As a result the national culture of Armenia acquired some features characteristic to both eastern and western civilizations. Armenian material and spiritual culture have resulted from rich cultures of the most ancient inhabitants of Armenian uplands, all those ethnic elements which participated in the formation of Armenian people. Naturally, the greatest role was played by the outstanding Urartu culture. Until 301 the culture of Armenia had developed under two influences - western (Hellenism) and eastern ( Parthia ). However, these influences only supplemented and enriched the national culture. Christianity as one of the mighty sources of the world's culture created new trends in architecture, fine arts, and music. The creation of Armenian alphabet in 405 by Mesrop Mashtots became a major milestone in the development of culture.

History in Armenia
Edit This Province Kotayk, аntique temple I century Prehistory Archaeologists refer to the Shulaveri-Shomu culture of the central Transcaucasus region, including modern Armenia , as the earliest known prehistoric culture in the area, carbon-dated to roughly 6000 - 4000 BC . However, a recently discovered tomb has been dated to 9000 BC . Another early culture in the Armenian Highland and surrounding areas—the Kura-Araxes culture —is assigned the period of ca. 4000 - 2200 BC , and is believed to have subsequently developed into the Trialeti culture (ca. 2200 - 1500 BC ). Armenians are an Indo-European race. The original Armenian name for the country was Hayq, later Hayastan, translated as the land of Haik, and consisting of the name Haik and the Persian suffix '-stan' (land). According to legend, Haik was a great-great-grandson of Noah (son of Togarmah, who was a son of Gomer, a son of Noah's son, Yafet), and according to tradition, a forefather of all Armenians. Mount Ararat, a sacred mountain for the Armenian people, rising in the center of the Armenian Highland as its highest peak, is traditionally considered the landing place of Noah 's Ark. The name Armenia was given to the country by the surrounding states, as it was the name of the strongest tribe living in the historic Armenian lands, who called themselves Armens. It is traditionally derived from Armenak or Aram (the great-grandson of Haik's great-grandson, and another leader who is, according to Armenian tradition, the ancestor of all Armenians).

Armenia : Culture
The Armenians became active in literature and many art forms at a very early point in their civilization. The beginning of truly national art is usually fixed at the onset of the Christian era. The three great artistic times coincided with times of freedom or semi-freedom: from the fifth to the seventh century; the Bagratid golden age of the 9th and 10th centuries; and the era of the kingdom of Lesser Armenia in the 12th to 14th centuries. Of particularly high quality in the earlier times were work in gold and bronze, as well as temples, and military fortifications. In the early Christian era, classical church architecture was adapted in a series of cathedrals. The circular domes typical of Armenian churches were copied in Western Europe and in Ottoman Turkey. The best example of the typical architectural sculpture used to adorn such churches is the early tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross on an island in Lake Van. The nineteenth century saw a blooming of Armenian painting. Artists from that time, such as the portrait painter Hacop Hovnatanian and the seascape artist Ivan Aivazovsky, continue to enjoy international reputations. famous figures of the twentieth century have included the unorthodox Alexander Bazhbeuk-Melikian, who lived a persecuted existence in Tbilisi, and the émigré surrealist Arshile Gorky, who greatly determined a generation of young American artists in New York.

Cultural tradition has been a means of maintaining a sense of national unity among widely dispersed groups of Armenians.
    Literature and the Arts
The Armenians became active in literature and many art forms at a very early point in their civilization. Urartian metalworking and architecture have been traced back to about 1000 B.C. The beginning of truly national art is usually fixed at the onset of the Christian era. The three great artistic periods coincided with times of independence or semi-independence: from the fifth to the seventh century; the Bagratid golden age of the ninth and tenth centuries; and the era of the kingdom of Lesser Armenia in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. Of especially high quality in the earlier periods were work in gold and bronze, as well as temples, military fortifications, and aqueducts. In the early Christian era, classical church architecture was adapted in a series of cathedrals. The circular domes typical of Armenian churches were copied in Western Europe and in Ottoman Turkey. The best example of the distinctive architectural sculpture used to adorn such churches is the early tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross on an island in Lake Van. The architecture of contemporary Erevan is distinguished by the use of pinkish tufa stone and a combination of traditional Armenian and Russian styles.
