    The Armenian Culture
Armenia's culture is unique in many ways. First, it is so much bigger than the nation itself that it overwhelms and dominates all other features of the Armenian ethnic identity. Second, it is very diversified. During its more than 2,000 year-old history, Armenia has gone through so many radical changes in its size and political status, that our culture has been influenced by and has influenced many other cultures. The many wars and other disasters in ancient and recent time tore the country apart and left a deep imprint in its culture. That tragic division had some positive consequences too, for instance, post-mediaeval Armenian literature has two different traditions, Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian, which being a part of a original literary heritage, have their own distinct linguistic and stylistic properties. Other important characteristics of Armenian culture are its permanence and longevity. Throughout its history, Armenia resisted invasion and absorption, relaying through its art one of the most beautiful manifestations of its identity. And, finally, when we say, for example, Armenian art, we don't usually mean art from Armenia, more often we refer to art of the Armenian people, who despite being scattered all over the world stubbornly stick to each other, to their traditions, their cultural heritage, their mother tongue.

Located in the greater Caucasus region, between Russia and Iran, it is right between Europe and the Middle East. The culture of Armenia has parts of both of these very different regions. Another influence on their culture is the fact that so many other countries have ruled Armenia. At different times, Turkey, Russia, Greece, and Persia ruled Armenia. Each influenced Armenia in different ways. A good example of this is Armenian folk music.

Armenia occupies a territory of 29,800 square kilometers. The average altitude of the territory is 1,800 meters above sea level, the highest peak has an altitude of 4,090 meters and the lowest point is the Debed canyon with an altitude of 380 meters. Part of the chain of mountains situated within the Alps-Himalayas mountain system, the Armenian Plateau contains an endless chain of mountains, lakes hidden in the heights, mountain torrents and waterfalls, valleys, forests and isolated highlands. Among all these, Lake Sevan unveils itself with constantly changing colors - harmoniously matching or contrasting itself to the sky. It is almost sinful to visit Armenia and to not see Lake Sevan. Sevan is a lake of mysteries, located at an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level, and reaching a maximum depth is 99 meters. Twenty eight rivers merge into Sevan while only one - Hrazdan - flows out.
Elsewhere on the territory of Armenia [see map of regions of Armenia] there are ten natural lakes, fifteen swift rivers, and five canyons that form a common lacework of high and low peaks. On any visit to Armenia you will see natural wonders, and an embroidery of crosses carved into mountains. For centuries, artisans struggled and created the monastery of Geghard - a monument carved into the surrounding rock.

      [ armenia - cultural overview ]
Throughout the centuries, Armenians have created a unique and remarkable culture at the intersection of east and west. Even though countless invaders attempted to destroy it, archaeological research testifies to its existence alongside that of the Babylonians and the Assyrians from at least the III Millennium BC, proven by excavations at Erebuni, Teyshebaini and Medzamor.
In 301AD, Armenians were the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as their national state religion, and this influenced many developments in Armenian culture, and specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsime, Gayane and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture, Zvartnots.
      Armenian Language
The Armenian language is part of the larger Indo-European family, and the Armenian alphabet was created at the beginning of the 5th Century by St. Mesrob Mashtots. Since then, the alphabet has become the solid foundation of national language and culture, with over 25,000 Armenian Illuminated Manuscripts currently preserved in the Matenadaran, the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts located in central Yerevan. Armenian Manuscripts are also held by libraries and museums in Jerusalem, Vienna, Venice, London and elewhere.

    Overview of Armenia: Culture
iGuide Europe Caucasus Armenia Overview Culture As Armenia straddles Europe and Asia, East and West, so does the culture. Many Armenians refer to Armenia as a European nation, but their social conservatism in some realms hasn't been seen in Europe proper for a few decades. The collapse of the Soviet Union has opened up many of these channels again, and change is coming rapidly, but much more so in Yerevan than in the rest of the country. The small and very homogeneous (about 99% Armenian) population is strongly family oriented. The people across the land are very hospitable, and place a lot of pride in their hospitality. Show up in a village without a penny, and food and a place to stay will flow - along with drinks and endless toasts. Religion Many visitors will be surprised to know that Armenia is not just a Christian nation, but it is the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion. It took place in 301 AD. One can find thousands of churches and monasteries in Armenia. Armenians are Apostolic Christians and have their own Catholicos (religious leader, like the Pope for Catholics). Armenia Photos Armenia Travel Guide Select a section to browse the Armenia guide

Caucasian hospitality is legendary and stems from ancient tradition. Social gatherings focused around sumptuous presentations of course after course of elaborately prepared, well-seasoned (but not spicy-hot) food. The host or hostess will often put morsels on a guest?s plate whenever it is empty or fill his or her glass when it gets low. After a helping or two it is acceptable to refuse politely or, more simply, just leave a little uneaten food. Related Topics:
The city?s National Art Gallery has more than 16,000 works that date back to the middle ages. It houses paintings by many European masters. The Modern Art Museum, the Children?s Picture Gallery, and the Martiros Saryan Museum are only a few of the other noteworthy collections of fine art on display in Yerevan. Moreover, many private galleries are in operation, with many more opening each year. They feature rotating exhibitions and sales.
