Description
Europe
, the planet's 6th largest continent includes 47 countries and assorted dependencies and territories.
In exacting geographic definitions, Europe is really not a continent, but part of the peninsula of Euroasia which includes all of Europe and Asia. However, it's still widely referred to as a continent.
The European continent is separated from Asia by Russia's Ural Mountains, and the Caspian and Black Seas. Europe's highest point, just north of the Georgia border in European Russia is Mt. Elbrus at 18,481 ft (5,633m). Its lowest point is on the edge of the Caspian Sea , at 92 ft (28m) below sea level. Europe Maps Bodies of Water here! Capital Cities here! It's not a big country, but it has many interesting places. Armenia has beautiful mountains, forests, and cities. There are also a lot of very old things in Armenia. In fact, Armenia's capital city, Yerevan, is one of the oldest cities in the world. There are several countries surrounding Armenia. To the north is Georgia. To the east is Azerbaijan. To the south is Iran, and to the west is Turkey. This part of the world has a long history. Armenians first came here around eight thousands years ago. They created a country with a government. Armenia's government then created a central city. This city is Yerevan. It was created almost 3,000 years ago.

Armenia: Geography Geography The Republic of Armenia lies in a triangular section of the Transcaucasus, bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and the Republic of Georgia. With an area of 29,800 square kilometers (11,490 square miles), the landlocked country is just about the size of Vancouver Island. The capital city, Yerevan, lies on the Hrazdan River, and is home to some 1.2 million people. The next three largest cities are Gyumri (pop. 121,000), Vanadzor (pop. 74,000) and Abovian (pop. 54,000). Another important city is Echmiadzin, located some 20 miles west of Yerevan, which is the seat of the patriarchate of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The greatest part of Armenia is mountainous (about 300 feet above sea level), while one-third is pastureland. Forest and woodland cover 12 percent of the contry, arid land some 18 percent, and permanent crops cover 3 percent. The highest elevation is 4,095 meters (Mt. Aragats) and the lowest point is 400 meters above the sea level (Debed river). There are more than 200 streams and rivers in Armenia, none navigable, however, because of their steep descents and rapid currents. The Armenian countryside also boasts some 100 small, but picturesque lakes. One of the largest mountain lakes in the world, Lake Sevan, covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers and is about 650 feet above sea level.

... Tavush Armenia is not rich in water resources despite having quite a network of rivers – they are rather small. All in all there are more than three hundred rivers of 10 km and longer. Some of them cut deep gorges and canyons in steep stony rocks. The majority of rivers in Armenia are the inflows of the river Araks – one of the largest rivers in the Caucasus flowing across entire Georgia and running into the river Kura on the territory of Azerbaijan. The big inflows of Araks on the territory of Armenia are the Akhuryan, the Kasagh, the Razdan, the Arpa and the Vorotan. The rivers Debed, Agstev and Akhum are the right inflows of the Kura running into the Caspian Sea. Some Armenian rivers belong to Lake Sevan basin. The rivers are fed with thawed, rain and subsoil waters. In spring the rivers become rapid and deep. And in the middle of summer the rivers get shallow and in the autumn their levels will rise at the expense of rain water. The Longest Rivers: Araks – on the territory of Armenia - 158 km (total length - 1,072 km)

GEOGRAPHY …their country must ever be one of the most interesting on the globe Lord Byron The Republic of Armenia is situated in the northeast of the Armenian Upland, between the Caucasus and Asia Minor, bordered by Azerbaijan , Iran , Turkey and the Republic of Georgia . With an area of 29,800 square kilometers (11,490 square miles), Armenia is just about the size of Belgium. The capital city, Yerevan , lies on the Hrazdan River , and is home to some 1.2 million people. The next three largest cities are Gyumri (pop. 121,000), Vanadzor (pop. 74,000) and Abovian (pop. 54,000). Another important city is Echmiadzin, located some 20 miles west of Yerevan , which is the religious centre of the Armenian Apostolic Church and all Armenians. The most part of Armenia is mountainous and flat with few forests. The average altitude of the territory is 1,800 meters above the sea level; the highest peak is Mount Aragats with an altitude of 4,090 meters. Mount Ararat , which was historically part of Armenia , is the highest mountain in the region. Now located in Turkey , but clearly visible in Armenia , it is regarded by the Armenians as a symbol of their land. Because of this, the mountain is present on the Armenian national emblem today.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: Armenia prides itself on being the first nation to formally adopt Christianity (early 4th century). Despite periods of autonomy, over the centuries Armenia came under the sway of various empires including the Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Persian, and Ottoman. It was incorporated into Russia in 1828 and the USSR in 1920. Armenian leaders remain preoccupied by the long conflict with Muslim Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a primarily Armenian-populated region, assigned to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the area in 1988; the struggle escalated after both countries attained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper. The economies of both sides have been hurt by their inability to make substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution. TOP OF PAGE
