Armenia : History
Ethnic groups in Armenia include Armenians (98%), Kurds, Russians, Greeks, and others. More than 90% of the population is nominally affiliated with the Armenian Apostolic Church, which is considered to be the national church of Armenia. Languages are Armenian (96%), Russian, and others. Armenia first emerged around 800 BC as part of the Kingdom of Urartu or Van, which flourished in the Caucasus and eastern Asia Minor until 600 BC. After the destruction of the Seleucid Empire, the first Armenian state was founded in 190 BC. At its zenith, from 95 to 65 BC, Armenia extended its rule over the entire Caucasus and the area that is now eastern Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon. For a time, Armenia was the strongest state in the Roman East. It became part of the Roman Empire in 64 BC and adopted a Western political, philosophical, and religious orientation. In 301 AD, Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, establishing a church that still exists independently of both the Roman Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches. During its later political eclipses, Armenia depended on the church to preserve and protect its unique identity. From around 1100 to 1350, the focus of Armenian nationalism moved south, as the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, which had close ties to European Crusader states, flourished in southeastern Asia Minor until it was conquered by Muslim states.

For hundreds of years, the people of Armenia were without a home. That's because for much of its history, Armenia existed only as a part of nearby countries or empires. It's been only recently (in the last 10 years or so) that Armenia has existed as a truly unified and independent country. The history of the Armenian people stretches back about 8,000 years. The first people to settle in the area of Armenia in eastern-central Asia arrived around 6,000 BC. The first government in the area was the kingdom of Urartu, which governed the area around Lake Van in the 13th century BC. The Urartu kingdom fell a few hundred years later, and came under rule of the Persians. In 30 BC, the Roman Empire conquered Armenia, and less than 100 years later, the Parthians took Armenia from Rome.

Armenia : History
Armenian civilization had its beginnings in the sixth century B.C. In the centuries following, the Armenians withstood invasions and nomadic migrations, creating a unique culture that blended Iranian social and political structures with Hellenic and later Christianliterary traditions. For two millennia, independent Armenian states existed sporadically in the region between the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, until the last medieval state was destroyed in the fourteenth century. A landlocked nation in modern times, Armenia was the smallest Soviet republic from 1920 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Armenians are an ancient people who speak an Indo-European language and have traditionally colonised the border regions common to modern Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. They call themselves hai and their nation Haiastan. Their neighbors to the north, the Georgians, call them somekhi, but most of the rest of the world follows the usage of the ancient Greeks and refers to them as Armenians, a term derived according to legend from the Armen tribe. Thus the Russian word is armianin, and the Turkish is ermeni. Gorbachev's 1989 proposal for enhanced autonomy for NagornoKarabakh within Azerbaijan satisfied neither Armenians nor Azerbaijanis, and a long and inconclusive conflict erupted between the two peoples. In September 1989, Azerbaijan began an economic blockade of Armenia's vital fuel and supply lines through its territory, which until that time had carried about 90 % of Armenia's imports from the other Soviet republics.

Short history of Armenia
Background One of the amazing things about visiting Armenia is that the more you look around, the older the place gets. Recent History in Armenia starts in the 4th c. CE, and then goes back to the time Alexander the Great began his conquest of the known world.  Just Getting Started History begins with the first great Ancestral Armenian Empire, Urartu, which rose around 1250 BC, a potent rival to the Assyrians and Babylonians.
Then there is the Beginning to Get Old History , which begins at the time of Troy, goes past the Old Dynasty era to the Cradle of Civilization, when humans created the first cities, discovered the wheel, and uncovered the secrets of copper, bronze and iron. But what really begins to tests your ability to comprehend history at all, is that Armenia’s history keeps going back , tens of thousands of years, to the Stone Age, the Paleolithic Era, when some of the oldest pictograms discovered are carved on the sides of mountains.  Forerunners of the Indo-European language, these markings show a time when mankind first pictured the world as round, when they began to create the constellations of the zodiac and divided time into months, weeks and days. All this in little ole Armenia?

History of Armenia My thanks to Sako for contributing this material,
as well as the genocide and treaty maps. The present-day Republic of Armenia occupies but a fraction of the ancient Armenia, which extended from the lesser Caucasus Mountains south across the Armenian plateau to the Taurus Mountains. Frequent earthquakes still remind us that the land lies near the great geological fault between the Asian and African subcontinent plates. The Armenian plateau is a highland which rises directly above its surrounding regions. Geography undoubtedly played a key role in the history and culture of Armenia. Forming an important highway of great value for trade and commerce between Asia and Europe, Armenia it seems was destined to be at grips with adversity. The land with its untold riches and its strategic position of primary import stirred the ambitions of many "superpowers" of the region. For a succession of centuries, the Armenians were in constant warfare with invaders and conquerors - Assyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Parthians, Arabs and Turks - who rolled over their homeland, although certainly not without meeting the most stubborn resistance. Throughout these turbulent centuries, the Armenians successfully asserted their historical identity and upheld their national heritage against great odds. Although on occasions overpowered by superior forces and reduced to the status of vassals, they nevertheless enjoyed a semblance of national autonomy.

An Orthodox Christian country, Armenia was incorporated into Russia in 1828 and the USSR in 1920. Armenian leaders remain preoccupied by the long conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a primarily Armenian-populated exclave, assigned to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the exclave in 1988; the struggle escalated after Soviet Union in 199both countries attained independence from the 1. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper. The economies of both sides have been hurt by their inability to make substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution. Expert Armenia History Vacation Planning
