    Aromatherapy History, Product and supply
    Origin and history of aromatherapy:
The origins of Aromatherapy can be traced through the religious , medical and social practices of all the major civilizations. The term ' Aromatherapie ' was first used in 1928 by a French chemist- Rene Maurice Gattefosse to describe the therapeutic action of aromatic plant essences. He was fascinated by the benefits of lavender oil in healing his burned hand without leaving any scars. He started investigating the effect of other essential oils for healing and for their psychotherapeutic benefits. Although the term 'Aromatherapy' has been coined only in the twenteeth century, this system of stress and depression and skin treatment has a long and distinguished tradition. even the Bible refers to the use of plants and their oils for the treatment of illness, and it is well known that the Egyptians used essential oils for embalming their dead, and as cosmetics. Aromatherapy had been around for 6000 years or more. The Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils. The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing, massage, and for embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago. Today there is a world wide revival in the art of aromatherapy and contemporary research in beginning to understand the scientific foundations of oils properties and applications, discovered by trail and error over thousands of years.

Diffuse Essential Oils in Offices or Waiting Rooms?
    Ask the Aromatherapist
Hi, I work for a holistic and integrative physician and we want to add aromatherapy to our office, my question is what is the best type of diffuser for a large waiting room.
A couple of people have written to me asking about diffusing essential oils in offices or waiting rooms. In this sort of situation, I think it's important to bear in mind that when you choose to diffuse essential oils in a public space, you are subjecting your patients, clients, and/or coworkers to potent aromas they may or may not appreciate. Different people have different reactions to aromas, based on personal preferences and emotional associations with particular scents. And, diffusing essential oils using a potent method - such as with an electric nebulizer - may cause headaches or irritate some people's eyes, nasal passages, or airways. In addition, it wouldn't be good for anyone - an employee who is in the office all day, for example - to continuously be exposed to a heavy mist of essential oils all day, day after day.
For those reasons, I would take a conservative approach to diffusing essential oils in public spaces and use

  • zSB(3,3) Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine that uses the medicinal properties of the essential oils of plants and herbs. The use of plant essential oils dates back to the ancient times in Egypt, Italy, India, and China. French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy in 1937, when he witnessed first-hand the healing power of lavender oil on healing skin burns.
Today, aromatherapy is widely practiced in North America and Europe. It is often integrated into holistic treatments, and is used in spa treatments and products such as candles, massage oil, and other relaxation products.
The essential oils used in aromatherapy are plant volatile oils from the flowers, leaves, stems, buds, branches, or roots that have been extracted using steam distillation, water and stem distillation or cold-pressing.

Celebrating 18 years in Aromatherapy Education and Practice Click here to view our blog.
It is with incredible gratitude that I reflect on 20 years of being an educator and practitioner in the ever growing and expanding field of aromatherapy. It has been an honor to be so involved with practicing, teaching, researching, growing, writing and learning about aromatic plants, essential oils, herbs, and the world of health and healing. Over the years I have become more passionate about education in aromatherapy as well as being empowered in our choices for healthcare. As I reflect on the experiences over the past 20 years I come to appreciate the profound healing aromatherapy (also known as aromatic medicine) has offered not only for me and my family but also for the students, friends, and colleagues who have travelled the aromatic path with us. Aromatherapy is gaining in popularity and is considered by many to be one of the leading complementary healthcare modalities of the twenty-first century. In recent years, rapid developments in aromatic medicine, neuroanatomy, stress-related disease, and complementary care have enormously expanded the boundaries of aromatherapy. This expansion of knowledge and application has been accompanied by an ever-increasing integration of aromatherapy and other healthcare practices such as massage therapy, nursing, esthetics, psychology, and hospice care. Aromatherapy is showing up in a variety of settings, including spa, hospice, hospitals, complementary healthcare centers, individual practices and perhaps most importantly, homecare healthcare. As the healthcare crisis continues to grow in the United States, more and more individuals are seeking natural alternatives or complements to support their own health and healing.

Aromatherapy: Making Dollars out of Scents
Stephen Barrett, M.D. Aromatherapy sometimes called aroma therapy is described by its proponents as "the therapeutic use of the essential oils of plants." The word "essential" does not refer to nutritional value but to the volatile, aromatic components that are the "essence" of the plant. Essential oils are said to be highly concentrated substances extracted from flowers, leaves, stalks, fruits, and roots, and also distilled from resins. They are alleged to contain hormones, vitamins, antibiotics, and antiseptics and to represent the "life force," "spirit," or "soul" of the plant [1]. The oils are administered in small quantities through inhalation, massage, or other applications to the skin. Occasionally, a product is taken internally. The products include diffusers, lamps, pottery, candles, pendants, earrings, shampoos, skin creams, lotions, and bath salts, and shower gels. Health Foods Business estimated that the total of aromatherapy products sold through health-food stores was about $59 million in 1995 and $105 million in 1996.
