Studio courses are designed to help each student formulate a personal philosophy that guides his or her art-making process. The program offers studio courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, digital photography and digital media. Art Education Seminars explore issues in contemporary art education and help students develop the necessary skills to create meaningful and stimulating art curricula. The seminars investigate current and proposed theory and practice in K-12 art education. They enable artist/educators to identify, examine, and assess their own views on art education and implement those views in their classrooms. Art History courses build skills in critical reading and writing, important elements in the formation of a rich idea base for art education. The courses examine contemporary art issues and explore art in a historical context.

Curriculum For Arts and Humanities
"Silhouettes"
Mary Harrison; Classroom Teacher
Using A Student As A Model... "Basically, you place a white art sheet about A3 size onto a wall, make sure it is placed at the exact height of your student's head. Next the student stands sideways in front of the sheet. The teacher now turns on the overhead projector, which is facing the student, about a meter or so away. As you will see, the shadow or portrait of the student now appears on the white art paper. Next a fellow student ,or in the case of younger children, the teacher, draws the outline of the students portrait on the art paper. The said student now paints his/her portrait in, in black. The result is very dramatic and we have had great fun with visitors to our classroom, guessing which child matches which portrait. The students loved it! I first learned of portraits in college."

Pirate Ship
This art lesson involves children drawing and painting a pirate ship using step by step instructions. I drew this pirate ship after I read Pamella Allen's book 'I Wish I had a Pirate Suit ' to my Yr 1 class.
Materials
  • White art paper Graphite pencils Black waterproof markers (thin and thick) Watercolour paints Brushes
Step 1
Use a graphite pencil to draw the shape of the boat. I used a waterproof black marker over the top of the graphite but this step should be left until the entire boat is drawn (see step 5).
Step 2: Add the mast, flagpole and flag.
Step 3: Add the sail and the flag. Draw the skull and cross bones on the flag and attach the sail to the boat.
Step 4: Draw the anchor and windows.
Step 5: Use the thin and thick black markers to draw over the pencil lines and add some waves and birds. Use watercolour paints to add colour to the drawing.
