Guide To Reactive Arthritis - Reiter's Syndrome
Reactive arthritis is a type of arthritis that occurs as a reaction to an infection elsewhere in the body. Reactive arthritis is also known as Reiter's syndrome, and your doctor may refer to it by yet another term, as a seronegative spondyloarthropathy.
    Diagnosing Reactive Arthritis
After decades of research, experts still disagree on some of the specific criteria used for the classification and diagnosis of Reactive Arthritis, formerly known as Reiter's syndrome.

A patient information handout on reactive arthritis, written by the authors of this article, is provided on page 507. Reactive arthritis, also called Reiter's syndrome, is the most common type of inflammatory polyarthritis in young men. It is sometimes the first manifestation of human immunodeficiency virus infection. An HLA-B27 genotype is a predisposing factor in over two thirds of patients with reactive arthritis. The syndrome most frequently follows genitourinary infection with Chlamydia trachomatis , but other organisms have also been implicated. Treatment with doxycycline or its analogs sometimes shortens the course or aborts the onset of the arthritis. Reactive arthritis may also follow enteric infections with some strains of Salmonella or Shigella, but use of antibiotics in these patients has not been shown to be effective. Reactive arthritis should always be considered in young men who present with polyarthritis. Symptoms may persist for long periods and may, in some cases, cause long-term disability. Initial treatment consists of high doses of potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Patients with large-joint involvement may also benefit from intra-articular corticosteroid injection. (Am Fam Physician 1999;60:499-507.)

    Things To Do
    Carol's Battle Starts Early
Carol, my wife, was diagnosed with JRA (Juvenille Rheumatoid Arthritis) when she only 14 months old. At the time, 27 years ago, not much was known about treatments for JRA especially in children. There were not nearly as many choices of medication or doctors back then. Her parents, much to their credit, never gave up though. Doctors told her parents that she may never be able to walk normally or run and do the normal things that kids do, like ride a bike. They apparently did not know whom they were dealing with. Carol and her parents did not give up, they went to the best. They went to Children's Memorial in Chicago and with several years of physical therapy, braces, medication, pain, and more determination then I have ever seen, Carol was able to walk unassisted and attended school and did the things "normal" kids do, yes, even ride a bike.

arthritis a term that means joint inflammation - is the leading cause of physical disability in the United States, affecting about one in every six Americans.
    http://www.foodallergytest.com/arthritis.html
    Arthritis
Arthritis - a term that means joint inflammation - is the leading cause of physical disability in the United States , affecting about one in every six Americans. While the medical cost annually is estimated to be $51 billion and the total cost is $86 billion, by far the greatest cost is in the pain and suffering which greatly diminishes the quality of life of millions of Americans. Since there are many treatments for arthritis available today, trying to determine the best course of action may be difficult to pinpoint. As food sensitivities affect almost everyone with arthritis, treatment in these areas should be initiated first. It is most important to note that drugs are not the long-term answer because they do not get to the root cause and can have dangerous side effects. The relationship between diet and arthritis is and has been the source of in-depth studies for many years. These studies have shown that foods play a key role in the cause and treatment of arthritis. With this compelling evidence, the best course of action is to determine what foods are influencing the arthritis. Once these foods are isolated, they can be systematically eliminated from the diet. By far the best test available today to accomplish this treatment is the Sage Complement Antigen Test.

    79. Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment By Potassium
Potassium nutrition and physiology around the concept that the low potassium always present in arthritis and usually in heart disease should be relieved. An exhaustive opinion on the subject.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS TREATMENT by POTASSIUM, chapter I
by Charles Weber, MS This is the lead article in a series of articles about rheumatoid arthritis which discuss potassium nutrition and physiology.
The word "arthritis" = rheumatoid arthritis = RA in these articles (for a summation of potassium and copper nutrition, click here) CONTENTS of OTHER CHAPTERS II. Arthritis Research III. of the Health On the Net Foundation
PREFACE It is my contention that potassium deficiency is either causing, or greatly making worse, rheumatoid arthritis, which I will shorten to "arthritis" in these articles. In assessing the possibility of this hypothesis people have little to go on. Virtually any textbook in the past would devote no more than a paragraph to potassium which would state that potassium is never deficient in the diet, or give one exception to the dozen or more known ways of loss, or in some only under clinical conditions. The reason for this careless treatment of potassium is probably because potassium is present in almost all foods as grown in large quantities. Professionals think about it as if it were air or water. However even air and water can be deficient and if voluminous texts are not written about these deficiencies, it is because both of those deficiencies can be detected by our senses. Extremely powerful emotions and instincts impel people to correct those deficiencies immediately and at any cost. Potassium is odorless, colorless, and, in the usual concentrations, tasteless. There is no way to detect a deficiency and cell content can not even easily be assessed in the body by modern analytical procedures. Whole body cell content is virtually "invisible".
