Welcome to the Online Edition!
So much has changed since 1992, when this book was first published, but people have told me there's still a lot in it that they find helpful. So I'm having a go at putting it on the internet, bit by bit, taking out or revising what's very out-of-date. In chapter 15 there's a new section on 'using the internet to find things out' which you might like to have an early look at. We are very sorry to announce that Jill Holroyd died on 19 August 2009. Jill updated 23 of the 35 chapters of her book 'Arthritis at your age?' and uploaded them to this location on the Internet. We have since uploaded the remaining chapters, without updating them. Each chapter which has been uploaded without having been updated has a note at the beginning to say that it is the original text.
Important
Nothing in this internet book is intended as a substitute for your most important source of medical information, which should always be your doctor.

For the millions of people affected, it can be difficult to manage their Arthritis . The term describes many different diseases that cause tenderness, pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints. Some of the most common forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis fibromyalgia , and (less common) ankylosing spondylitis. With Osteoarthritis , the most common form of arthritis, the cartilage around the joint wears out and causes the bones in the joint to rub against each other, creating inflammation and pain. Spinal osteoarthritis can lead to lost flexibility, bone spurs (osteophytes), irritated nerves, back pain or spinal stenosis , and sciatica symptoms

    Arthritis
ARTHRITIS FORMULA TO REDUCE PAIN, SWELLING AND INCREASE MOVEMENT. The two most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Both are characterized by inflammation and/or pain in a joint or joints. Both diseases are related to nutrition. Osteoarthritis is from a lack of proper nutrition to replace what is lost through the wear, tear and aging and involves deterioration of the cartilage at the ends of the bones. There are two answers that I know of personally that will reverse this downward autoimmune disease spiral. One, cleanse the body of these toxins and two, add proper absorbable nutrition to the diet. I know that this sounds simplistic but without establishing these basic fundamental needs of your body you will never be well. The accepted form of medication with drugs will only mask the symptoms while adding still more toxicity as the real cause continues to relentlessly destroy your joints. I personally experienced arthritis twenty years ago, because when I had cancer I also had arthritis. At that time I was working in the plastering industry with its heavy lifting, repetitive movements, wet environment and I was toxic. The arthritis was in my low back (x-ray and MRI confirmed by Ca), my hands, my shoulders, hips, knees and feet. My hands and feet were the most irritating and bothersome until my back locked-up. It would do that about once a month and when it did I was stuck stooped over. I would leave work and get treatment at a chiropractor’s, put on a back brace and return to work; I had responsibilities.

    Introduction
Dogs are prone to many different types of bone problems. This page will focus on the arthritis that tends to occur in dogs, especially as they age ( Geriatric ). Arthritis literally means inflammation of the joint, but the term is used more generally to describe several different processes. These include degenerative joint disease (DJD), infectious joint disease, immune mediated joint disease, and crystal-induced joint diseases. Many people use the term arthritis synonymously with osteoarthritis (OA), a complex, slowly progressive, and degenerative arthritis that is characterized by the gradual development of joint pain, stiffness, and a decreased range of motion. OA, the most common form of joint disease in dogs, is relatively uncommon in cats. It can be seen in dogs of all ages, but is more commonly associated with older pets. OA is becoming more prevalent as the longevity of our pets increases.

You may have joint inflammation for a variety of reasons, including:
      • Broken bone Infection (usually caused by bacteria or viruses) An autoimmune disease (the body attacks itself because the immune system believes a body part is foreign) General "wear and tear" on joints
Often, the inflammation goes away after the injury has healed, the disease is treated, or the infection has been cleared. With some injuries and diseases, the inflammation does not go away or destruction results in long-term pain and deformity. When this happens, you have chronic arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common type and is more likely to occur as you age. You may feel it in any of your joints, but most commonly in your hips, knees or fingers. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include:

    Causes, Incidence, And Risk Factors
Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects the joint, allowing for smooth movement. Cartilage also absorbs shock when pressure is placed on the joint, like when you walk. Without the usual amount of cartilage, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling (inflammation), and stiffness. Review Date: 1/10/2009
