Did the Lady of the Lake, who protected Excalibur, have another name? If have seen her referred to as Elaine, Viviane, Nimue, and many variations of those names, but most of these were applied by writers long after King Arthur's time, or at least that is my understanding.

Ophelia
of William Shakespeare's Hamlet
Ophelia is the daughter of Polonius, sister to Laertes, and rejected lover of Hamlet in Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. Ophelia is a symbol of innocence gone mad. A dutiful daughter, she is manipulated into spying on Hamlet and must bear his humiliating and brutal remarks. She believes him to be mad, commenting sadly "O, what a noble mind is here o'erthrown." Having lost Hamlet's affection, she herself goes mad when her father is killed by Hamlet. Her mad scene (act IV, scene 5) is one of the best known in Western literature. Her madness and death and Hamlet's behaviour at her graveside further inflame Laertes to vengeance. There is a willow grows ascaunt the brook,
That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream.
Therewith fantastic garlands did she make
Of crow-flowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give a grosser name

Joseph Campbell's Mythic Journey
by Jonathan Young
New Perspectives Magazine July 1994 Mythologist Joseph Campbell was a masterful storyteller. He could weave tales from every corner of the world into spell-binding narratives. His lifelong quest from childhood days as a devout Catholic altar boy to fame as the world's most noted scholar in comparative mythology makes for a fine heroic story. The adventure picks up when young Joe Campbell sees the Indians in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1912. The future scholar soon became convinced that he had Indian blood. One of the striking details of the early years was Campbell's youthful studiousness. He read his way through the children's section of the public library and was admitted to the adult stacks at the age of eleven. He devoted himself to every available fact about Native American life, including the reports of the Bureau of American Ethnology. By high school, he was already writing articles on Native American mythology, presenting many of the themes he would still be working in his eighties. Campbell's life was a passionate intellectual journey. College years at Columbia University were spent discovering literature while becoming a track star and playing in a jazz band on weekends. Graduate study in the Holy Grail legends of Arthurian mythology took him to Paris and Munich where he discovered the ideas of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung as well as James Joyce, Thomas Mann and modern art. This is when he saw the parallels between mythic themes in literature and psychological lessons such as those revealed in dreams.

RETURN TO CONTENTS ARTHURIAN MYTHOLOGY wgdavey@zianet.com Overview OVERVIEW OF THE LEGENDS As an introduction to the detailed later discussion we will first summarize our perspective of Arthurian and Welsh Celtic mythology. We must emphasize that this is but a part of a far larger body of information contained in the totality of major Indo-European mythology – Welsh Celtic, Irish Celtic, Germanic (mainly Nordic), Greek, Persian, and particularly Indian. Taken together they permit the reconstruction of many parts of an "original" Indo European mythology. The role of Indian mythological and religious works cannot be over emphasized since it alone is vastly larger than all the other sources combined; consequently, in general, each of the other mythologies finds counterparts in India rather than elsewhere. We shall attempt to summarize those aspects of the other mythologies which link with Welsh Celtic, but the reader should be aware that knowledge of all of the mythologies is essential to properly appreciate their interconnected nature. But, unfortunately, even when the magic is taken out, almost none of this story has any basis in truth. There was indeed an invasion of Britain in the Sixth Century AD, and there is a slim reference to a Roman-British man who rallied the disheartened British and fought successfully against Saxon invaders. And this man may even have been called Arthur though the name that has come down to us is different, Aurelius Ambrosius.
