Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was born in France. He intended to study law, but during recovery from an illness began to paint, and decided to study art formally. He worked in Paris with Bougereau at the Beaux-Arts, and developed as a neo-Impressionist, later becoming a leader of the Fauve movement. By 1918 he had an international reputation, and besides paintings and line drawings, was commissioned to do book illustrations, ballet sets, and murals. His last major work was the complete decoration (furniture, murals, stained glass, and vestments) of the Dominican Chapel in Venice.

Henri Matisse - 1869-1954
Henri Matisse was born as the son of a grain merchant in the Picardy region of northern France. He studied law and worked as a law clerk. When Henri Matisse was 21 years old he became seriously ill. During the phase of convalescence Matisse started painting and discovered his love for art, which should become his life-long passion. Two years later, in 1892, he gave up his career as a lawyer. He attended art classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and dabbled in different styles. He then was influenced by the impressionist and post-impressionist painters Pisarro, Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin and Paul Signac and by the paintings of W. Turner. Around the year 1905 he finally found his own style characterized by daring, bright colors executed in a broad brush stroke.

The World Around Us
Pupils explore the shapes, lines, colours and textures to create a collage reflecting many of the shapes and textures found in everyday life.
What you'll need:
  • Drawing materials A variety of everyday fabrics of different textures An assortment of threads, beads, scissors, sequins and ribbon Scissors Sticki Dots/ Sticki Tape Glue
Develop a Design
Look at natural forms, eg plants, seed pods, roots, leaves, flowers as well as cross-sections of fruits and vegetables, examining line, shape, colour and texture. Look at botanical illustrations and architecture. Examine designs based on plant forms, animals, birds, insects found on everyday objects such jewellery, tableware, tiles or fabrics as illustrated. Excellent examples can be found in the works of Henri Matisse and William Morris.
Experiment!
Pupils can develop their drawings into a design for a textile collage¬ – creating a pattern – by copying and arranging the main shapes on to paper. Discuss the size and relationship of different shapes and how they should be placed on the paper in relation to each other. Keep it simple: pupils could simplify the design by enlarging the main shapes. They can use the paper pattern to transfer the shapes onto the fabric and then to cut out the shapes. The next step is to choose the fabrics they would like to use in their collage.

Henri Matisse Matisse, Henri (-mile-Benot) (b. Dec. 31, 1869, Le Cateau, Picardy, Fr.d. Nov. 3, 1954, Nice)
artist often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment. (Biographie en franais)
Matisse, Master of Color
The art of our century has been dominated by two men: Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. They are artists of classical greatness, and their visionary forays into new art have changed our understanding of the world. Matisse was the elder of the two, but he was a slower and more methodical man by temperament and it was Picasso who initially made the greater splash. Matisse, like Raphael , was a born leader and taught and encouraged other painters, while Picasso, like Michelangelo , inhibited them with his power: he was a natural czar.

Henri Matisse
Fauves Artist
There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter
than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first
to forget all the roses that were ever painted.
Henri Matisse was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse became an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.
He was the leader of the Fauves , a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement. In 1905, works by Matisse and other Fauve painters were exhibited together. The bold forms and bright colors of these paintings shocked the Paris art world.
Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of African, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the cubists.

    Matisse, Henri
Matisse, Henri key Picasso , Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great. Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau , in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac , drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in (c.1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g., Variation on a Still Life by de Heem
