Michelangelo Buonarroti
Learning and practicing various forms of art at a young age. Michelangelo Buonarroti, more commonly known as just Michelangelo, grew up to become the most revered Italian artist of the 16th century. Michelangelo is a master at both the chisel and paintbrush. His detailed sculptures show not only his great skill with the chisel but also his great knowledge of the human anatomy. The world famous "David" which stands at a towering thirteen feet plus, was perhaps one of Michelangelo greatest sculptures. Michelangelo's skill with the paintbrush is shown clearly in Sistine, here the world's greatest fresco is displayed at its full glory on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, Michelangelo worked high above the Chapel's floors, creating his greatest work ever. Interpreting religious scenes taken out of the bible in his own unique style, Michelangelo turned the ceiling of the chapel into a masterpiece of intricate design and unreal proportions. Although Michelangelo was initially regarded as an inferior artist to fellow artist of the time Raphael, the masterpiece of the Sistine Chapel elevated him to the greatest artist of his time. In fact, Michelangelo made such a great impact in art that even Raphael was influenced by his style.

Michelangelo BUONAROTI
Painter, Sculptor and Architect of Florence
About this time Michelangelo made friends with Francesco Granacci, who though quite young had placed himself with Domenico del Grillandaio to learn painting. Granacci perceived Michelangelo's aptitude for design, and supplied him daily with drawings of Grillandaio, then reputed to be one of the best masters not only in Florence but throughout Italy. Michelagnolo's desire to achieve thus increased daily, and Ludovico perceiving that he could not prevent the boy from studying design, resolved to derive some profit from it, and by the advice of friends put him with Domenico Grillandaio that he might learn the profession. At that time Michelangelo was fourteen years old. The author of his Life, Michelangelo's progress amazed Domenico when he saw him doing things beyond a boy, for he seemed likely not only to surpass the other pupils, of whom there were a great number, but would also frequently equal the master's own works. One of the youths happened one day to have made a pen sketch of draped women by his master, Michelangelo took the sheet, and with a thicker pen made a new outline for one of the women, representing her as she should be and making her perfect. The difference between the two styles is as marvellous as the audacity of the youth whose good judgment led him to correct his master. The sheet is now in my possession, treasured as a relic. I had it from Granaccio with others of Michelangelo, to place in the Book of Designs. In 1550, when Giorgio showed it to Michelangelo at Rome, he recognised it with pleasure, and modestly said that he knew more of that art when a child than later on in life.

Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man , along with his rival and fellow Italian, Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the Pietà and David , were sculpted before he turned thirty. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in

One must take these words of Vasari about the "divine beauty" of the work in the most literal sense, in order to understand the meaning of this composition. Michelangelo convinces both himself and us of the divine quality and the significance of these figures by means of earthly beauty, perfect by human standards and therefore divine. We are here face to face not only with pain as a condition of redemption, but rather with absolute beauty as one of its consequences.

Michelangelo drew extensively as a child, and his father placed him under the tutelage of Ghirlandaio, a respected artist of the day. After one unproductive year, Michelangelo became the student of Bertoldo di Giovanni, a sculptor employed by the Medici family. From 1490 to 1492, Michelangelo lived with the Medicis; during this time he learned from such philosophers as Ficino, Landino, Poliziano, and Savonarola. Although Michelangelo claimed that he was self-taught, one might perceive in his work the influence of such artists as Leonardo, Giotto, and Poliziano. He learned to paint and sculpt more by observation than by tutelage. Michelangelo was known to be extremely sensitive, and he combined an excess of energy with an excess of talent.
Sculpture
Michelangelo's earliest sculpture was made in the Medici garden near the church of San Lorenzo; his Bacchus and Sleeping Cupid both show the results of careful observation of the classical sculptures located in the garden. His later
