Raphael Sanzio
This greatly talented artist, together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, were the masters of the late renaissance. Raphael was greatly influenced by other artists of his time. Like many renaissance artists, Raphael's paintings were mainly of a religious nature and Raphael is well known for his many Maddonas as well as "The School of Athens". It is obvious from his paintings that Raphael is a talented artist, skilled in painting. His beautifully detailed paintings possessed a unique calmness, serenity and grace, however, many of his paintings lacked sufficient emotional expression, which was common in renaissance paintings. < Back Works Websites

RAPHAEL OF URBINO
Painter and Architect
Giovanni being courteous and well bred, made his acquaintance, and at a fitting opportunity told him what he wished in the most tactful manner. Pietro, who was also courteous and a friend of young men of promise, agreed to take Raphael. Accordingly Giovanni returned joyfully to Urbino, and took the boy with him to Perugia, his mother, who loved him tenderly, weeping bitterly at the separation. When Pietro had seen Raphael's method of drawing and his fine manners and behaviour, he formed an opinion of him that was amply justified by time. It is well known that while Raphael was studying Pietro's style he imitated him so exactly in everything that his portraits cannot be distinguished from those of his master, nor indeed can other things, as we see in some figures done in oils on a panel in S. Francesco at Perugia for Madonna Maddalena degli Oddi. It represents an Assumption, Jesus Christ crowning the Virgin in heaven, while the twelve Apostles about the tomb are contemplating the celestial glory. The predella contains three scenes: the Annunciation, the Magi adoring Christ, and the Presentation in the Temple. This work is most carefully finished, and anyone not skilled in style would take it to be by the hand of Pietro, though there is no doubt that it is by Raphael. After this Pietro returned on some business to Florence, and Raphael left Perugia, going with some friends to Citta di Castello. Here he did a panel in S. Agostino in that style, and a Crucifixion in S. Domenico, which, if not signed with Raphael's name, would be taken by everyone to be a work of Perugino. In S. Francesco in the same city he also did a Marriage of the Virgin;

    Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)
Renaissance Raphael was born Raphaello Sanzio in Urbino. His first painting lessons came from his father. It is said that he then trained with Perugino. His early work supports this theory reflecting the clarity and harmony which is prevalent in the work of Perugino. Later Raphael worked in Tuscany and Umbria where the work of Leonardo da Vinci - especially compositional devices - influenced his development. Evidence of this can be seen in

April 6, 1520, Rome, Papal States [Italy]), master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance . Raphael is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things; the flesh palpitates, the breath comes and goes, every organ lives, life pulsates everywhere.

Stamps on Raphael s most famous Madonna paintings

by Father Johann G. Roten, S.M. © Raphael is one of the most famous Madonna painters. He painted so many that his biography as a painter can be retraced and illustrated thanks to those outstanding artistic representations of Our Lady. The following is an attempt to present Raphael through his Madonnas, or at least a good number of them. Raphael's Madonnas are popular topics for Christmas stamps. Until 1991, Raphael's Madonnas were pictured on 298 stamps (or blocks of stamps) in seventy-five countries. Among the most popular we have: 1) Madonna del Gran'Duca
2) Sistine Madonna
4) Madonna Ansidei
5) Madonna della Sedia (chair)
6) Madonna Aldobrandini (or Garvagh or with Carnation)
7) Madonna with Goldfinch
8) Holy Family with Lamb
The first period: 1499-1504 Raphael Santi was born in Urbino/Umbria on April 6, 1483. The boy was taught by his father Giovanni Santi, an honest painter. Raphael was eleven when his father died. At age sixteen he left for Perugia. He was admitted into the school of Il Perugino, his true teacher and master. In 1502/1503 he spent fifteen months with Pinturicchio in Siena. At nineteen Raphael was still a timid, somewhat mystically inclined young painter of provincial origin and habits. His first Madonnas were young, with pouting mouth, round face and veiled head. The posture was traditional and rigid, the form at times fuzzy. Already his exceptional qualities of simplicity, grace and harmony in color and composition could be noted. His admiration went to Fra Angelico whose Madonnas seemed to escape gravity. He emulated his master

Raffaelo Sanzio or Raphael, was born in Urbino, Italy, on the 6th of April, 1483. His father, Giovanni Santi, was a painter in the Court of Urbino. And it is possible that Raphael received his first lessons in painting from him.
Raphael grew to become one of the most important artists of the Italian High Renaissance. His works are known for their ease, grandiose style, and clarity of form and composition.
An Artistic History
In 1499, Raphael went to Perugia, and became an apprentice to Perugino. His early works show a marked influence of this painter. One of Raphael’s first documented works is the altarpiece for the Church of San Nicola of Tolentino.
In 1504, Raffaelo went to Florence. He stayed there for four years, studying the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci . He slowly began to adopt in his painting the powerful and grand style that is the hallmark of the Renaissance.
In 1508, Raphael moved to Rome. Here, he was commissioned by Pope Julius II, to paint the rooms of his palace at the Vatican. He remained with the Vatican for a long time thereafter, and painted his famous portraits of Julius II, and his successor, Leo X.

Style: Renaissance Raphael was born in Italy over 500 years ago. He worked as an artist during the time known as the 'Renaissance'. He learnt a lot by looking at the work of other artists of his time like Leonardo Da Vinci. Many of his paintings were frescos (painted on walls) in the Vatican where the head of the Catholic church, the Pope, resides in Rome. One of Raphael's most famous paintings is called The School of Athens (seen below) where he shows some of the great philosophers of history, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras.
