Artists: Raphael
As a young contemporary 16th century artist working in the Vatican, Raphael kept company with two of the world's most important artistic figures: Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, who greatly influenced him. Art Issues: Restoration
It seems only fitting that restorer Pinan Brambilla enlisted the help of modern science and technology in restoring The Last Supper. Leonardo's legacy as one of history's rare true masters of both art and science lives on in preservation efforts. Overview
The National Gallery is fortunate to possess this country's finest collection of paintings by Raphael, the youngest of the three artists whose styles epitomize the High Renaissance. What Leonardo achieved by sheer intellect and Michelangelo through passionate intuition, Raphael acquired by persistent study and assimilation. Through the works in this room we can trace the process by which he transformed the fifteenth-century style of his earliest teachers into something new and of enduring influence. For later generations, Raphael's art came to represent an ideal of perfection, the very definition of easy grace and harmonious balance. (continue)

    Raphael Sanzio
Artist and Architect Italy One of the most important and talented artists of the Italian Renaissance, Raphael (or Raffaello Sanzio, or Rafael Sanzi or Santi) was born in Urbino and took his earliest lessons in art from his father. He was apprenticed to Perugino in Perugia, then moved on to Florence and Rome. Raphael is noted for his Madonnas, and is considered by many to have produced some of the world's most beautiful paintings. He was also an architect, designing the church of Sant' Eligio degli Orefici and working on the basilica of St. Peter's. Raphael was as handsome and charming as he was talented, and he became so popular that he acquired the nickname "the prince of painters." He gained the respect and patronage of Pope Julius II and spent the last 12 years of his life in Rome. Among his prolific works were projects for the pontiff, including a cycle of frescoes for a suite in the pope's personal living quarters.

    Visual Arts Review
The online gallery for Raphael Perez not only hosts his art but information on the artist which assists in understanding his art. Shading, dramatic lights and darks and the color red are a central point of the Perez style. Compositions range from wild colorful statements in abstracts or to some degree primitive form. Better yet a striking combination of the two. Subject matter include; still life, flowers, Paris, men, women, erotic art, the list is endless. Raphael Perez has definite mood and electricity to his work. Consider the image from his "Portraits" collection to the left. Perez has intensity, great emotion, and detail. A stark image conjuring many possible reasons for the emotion shown. In fact several for what the emotion is. The point here is that Perez has real feel in his works, yet enables you the visitor to establish some basis for yourself. Perez has a section on Lions. An apt subject for his style and use of bold darks and lights to create feel and continuity. In the image from his Lion collection at left the strong mood is set by all the artist has in play; color, shading, and imagery.

    Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio or Santi)
There is confusion about Raphael's birth and death dates. Sources variously state: (a) he died on his 37th birthday; (b) he died on the eve of his 37th birthday; (c) both his dates of birth and death were Good Friday; and (d) there have been mistakes in converting from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar The Gregorian calendar was introduced 62 years after Raphael's death, so the question of conversion between that calendar and the Julian calendar does not arise. The facts seem to be that:
    • he was born on Good Friday, 6 April 1483 he died on his 37th birthday, Sunday, 6 April 1520

In his biography of Raphael, Giorgio Vasari maintains that Raphael's father took the 11-year-old Raphael to Perugia to be apprenticed to Pietro Perugino. This is disputed by some authorities, although it is generally agreed that Raphael was in the Umbrian city from 1492, the year after his father died. Another important early commission was the Crowning of the Virgin for the Oddi Chapel in the church of San Francesco in Perugia. Raphael, probably as a member of Perugino's workshop, also worked on the frescoes of Collegio del Cambio.

      Raphael
Artist Born: 6 April 1483 Died: 6 April 1520 Birthplace: Urbino, Duchy of Urbino (Italy) Best known as: High Renaissance painter of The School of Athens Raphael, like Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci , is one of the most famous artists of Italy's High Renaissance and one of the greatest influences in the history of Western art. Immensely talented, he first studied with his father and then as an assistant to the great master Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. Raphael (also known as Raffaello Sanzio) worked in Florence (1504) and earned a reputation as a productive and much-admired painter before going to Rome sometime after 1508. In Rome he was commissioned by Pope Julius II to create the large-scale fresco The School of Athens , as well as other decorative work at the Vatican. Raphael also took over as architect of St. Peter's after the death of Donato Bramante (1514), contributed ten tapestries to the Sistine Chapel and painted some of the most prized and reproduced holy pictures of the era, including

RAPHAEL SANTI: THE PERFECT ARTIST, THE PERFECT MAN.
We are about to study Raphael, the most generally praised, the most beautiful, and certainly the most loved of all the painters of the world. When all these delightful things can be truthfully said of one man, surely we may look forward with pleasure to a detailed study of his life and works. Often in examining the lives of great men we are compelled to pass over some events which, to say the least, are not creditable. Of Raphael this was not true. He was gifted with all admirable qualities, and so many-sided was his genius that, while we think of him first as a painter, we must not forget that he also carved statues, wrote poems, played musical instruments, and planned great buildings. So much was he endeared to his pupils that, after he grew to be famous, he never went on the streets unless he was followed by an admiring throng of these students, ever ready to do his bidding or to defend his art from any possible attack by malicious critics. He lived at a time when artists were fiercely jealous of each other, and yet wherever he went harmony, like a good angel, walked unseen beside him, making whatever assembly he entered the abode of peace and good-will. It is a beautiful thing that such a strong, lovable man should have had for his name that of the chief of the archangels, Raphael, a name beautiful of sound and ever suggestive of beauty and loveliness.

    Raphael Abecassis
Raphael Abecassis was born in Marrakesh, Morocco in 1953 and grew up in the South of Israel where he works today. He studied art at the College of Education in Beersheva. Raphael is heralded as one of the new generation of Israeli artists with worldwide recognition. Drawing on the rich Jewish tradition, to which he brings his talent, Abecassis has developed a strikingly unique style, combining Jewish symbols, Sephardic motifs, and modern composition into a well-harmonized, bold celebration of color and image. He has exhibited in many museums and galleries in Israel, the United States, and Canada. In both 1986 and 1991, he won the coveted national competition for the official poster of Israel’s Independence Day celebration. In 1989, Prime Minister Itzchak Shamir of Israel presented Vice-President Dan Quayle a gift of the “Song of Songs” by Abecassis. In 1992, the artist’s exhibit “Odyssey of Spanish Jews” commemorating 500 years since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain went on an international tour from Jerusalem to Montreal, Los Angeles and New York City Hall. The artist’s works are a combination of the symbols of long-standing Jewish tradition with an innovative collection of colors and forms. His works are a synthesis of the natural and the supernatural, the traditional and the modern, the decorative and the mystic. In subtly varied compositions, precise calligraphy and daring natural colors, Abecassis creates works of aesthetic harmony and formal precision. The artist works in a variety of media including painting, serigraphy, ceramic, silver and glass. One of the artist’s noted accomplishments is the acclaimed “Sephardic Heritage Windows” stained glass located at the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel, in Los Angeles. In 1996, “Jerusalem 3000” a magnificent collection of 25 paintings by the artist, celebrating Jerusalem’s anniversary, was exhibited worldwide.

by Father Johann G. Roten, S.M. Raphael is one of the most famous Madonna painters. He painted so many that his biography as a painter can be retraced and illustrated thanks to those outstanding artistic representations of Our Lady. The following is an attempt to present Raphael through his Madonnas, or at least a good number of them. Raphael's Madonnas are popular topics for Christmas stamps. Until 1991, Raphael's Madonnas were pictured on 298 stamps (or blocks of stamps) in seventy-five countries. Among the most popular we have: 1) Madonna del Gran'Duca
    2) Sistine Madonna
    4) Madonna Ansidei
    5) Madonna della Sedia (chair)
    6) Madonna Aldobrandini (or Garvagh or with Carnation)
    7) Madonna with Goldfinch
    8) Holy Family with Lamb
The first period: 1499-1504 Raphael Santi was born in Urbino/Umbria on April 6, 1483. The boy was taught by his father Giovanni Santi, an honest painter. Raphael was eleven when his father died. At age sixteen he left for Perugia. He was admitted into the school of Il Perugino, his true teacher and master. In 1502/1503 he spent fifteen months with Pinturicchio in Siena. At nineteen Raphael was still a timid, somewhat mystically inclined young painter of provincial origin and habits. His first Madonnas were young, with pouting mouth, round face and veiled head. The posture was traditional and rigid, the form at times fuzzy. Already his exceptional qualities of simplicity, grace and harmony in color and composition could be noted. His admiration went to Fra Angelico whose Madonnas seemed to escape gravity. He emulated his master
