Rembrandt Van Rijn
Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden, the Netherlands. He was the ninth child born to Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck. His family was quite well-to-do; his father was a miller and his mother was a baker's daughter. As a boy he attended Latin school and was enrolled at the University of Leiden, although according to a contemporary he had a greater inclination towards painting; he was soon apprenticed to a Leiden history painter, Jacob van Swanenburgh, with whom he spent three years. After a brief but important apprenticeship of six months with the famous painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden in 1624 or 1625, which he shared with friend and colleague

Rembrandt van Rijn
Netherlands
Rembrandt Harmenszohn van Rijn, finest of the Dutch painters and one of the greatest artists of all time, was born in Leyden, the son of a prosperous miller. After attending Latin school young Rembrandt studied painting, first in Leyden and then in Amsterdam under Peter Lastman, from whom he learned the technique of chiaroscuro-the dramatic use of light and shadow-as his teacher had learned it in Italy from Caravaggio. Rembrandt's first studio was in Leyden, but in 1631 he moved to Amsterdam where he remained permanently. He was soon so busy with commissions for portraits that he needed many assistants. His work divides fairly distinctly into three different periods. His early works are sharply drawn and painted in a varied palette that was to decrease in range and direct proposition to this growing interest in light and shadow. In the years between 1640 and 1660, his middle period, he had developed a darker style with color applied in thick blobs, quick lines or dabs, and thinner washes that merge into a harmonious glow, bursting from a dark background to create rich, shimmering, and uneven surface effect. After 1660, his technique became even freer, possessing a jewel-like richness of color, and expressing intense emotion. Rembrandt was a supreme master in every form of painting: poetic landscapes; penetrating psychological portraits; religious and mythological works that reveal a personal approach to Christianity; theatrical or exotic subjects; and warm still lifes. He was a superb draughtsman and throughout his life produced drawings and copperplate etchings that are magical in line and feeling.

Rembrandt van Rign was born in Leiden, the Netherlands. He attended the University of Leiden and was soon apprenticed to a Leiden history painter, Jacob van Swanenburgh, with whom he spent three years. After a brief but important apprenticeship of six months with the famous painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, Rembrandt opened a studio in Leiden in 1624. In 1631 Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam, the city which was rapidly becoming the industrial and business capital of the Netherlands. It was here that he began to practice as a portraitist for the first time with great success. His oil paintings trace the progress from an uncertain young man, through the flourishing portrait-painter of the 1630s, to the troubled but massively powerful portraits of his old age. Together they give a remarkably clear picture of the man, his appearance and his psychological make-up, as revealed by his richly-weathered face.
Stylistically, Rembrandt’s paintings progressed from the early smooth manner, characterized by fine technique in the portrayal of illusionistic form, to the late rough treatment of richly variegated paint surfaces, which allowed for an illusionism of form suggested by the tactile quality of the paint itself.

ARISTOTLE CONTEMPLATING A BUST OF HOMER By Rembrandt http://www.artchive.com/artchive/R/rembrandt/aristotl.jpg.html "Rembrandt had one foreign patron, a Sicilian nobleman, who asked him to paint a philosopher. The request came at a time when Rembrandt had become embroiled in serious financial trouble, and this commission seems to have sparked off some deep inner response. The combination of his personal anxieties and the idea of philosophy drew from Rembrandt one of his greatest masterpieces, in which he contrasts two ways of being a genius. "He ponders visually the importance in life of material success, fame, and power, compared with being true to art. He does so by confronting the greatest Greek philosopher, Aristotle, with the greatest Greek poet, Homer. In the 4th century B.C., philosophy included the whole of science, and Aristotle understood it, integrated and systemized it. He was dazzlingly successful. We see his rich, wide, silken sleeves - those of a man who does not need to work - and, above all, his thick gold chain. The chain was a gift from Aristotle's most prestigious pupil, Alexander the Great, who had left Aristotle an enormous fortune, but whom the philosopher had failed to influence spiritually. "Rembrandt imagines Aristotle in all his fame and wealth, looking at a bust of the great blind poet Homer. From the meagerness of the bust, we can see that Homer was poor. He wandered around Greece with his harp, playing at evening parties, and earning a pittance. Homer was true to his genius: he made no money from his art, and he did not care. With the medallion, representing both his great material success and his great teaching failure, swinging between them, Aristotle ponders - and Rembrandt with him: What matters most? How can one be certain that one is not selling out? Of course, I can say nothing about Aristotle, but I am certain that Rembrandt never sold out. Perhaps it was precisely these moments of profound self-questioning that kept him pure.

Rembrandt van Rijn
R embrandt van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a Miller who wanted his son to get an education and achieve professional success, so Rembrandt was sent to the University of Leiden, where he studied science and anatomy; it was there he gained the knowledge of the human anatomy which would serve him during his artist's career. Rembrandt wanted to paint more than anything else, so he left University to study painting under Jacob I. van Swanenburch, learning about Italian Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci , and Michelangelo Buonarroti , but he was influenced by the work of Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio, a revolutionary artist known for his unorthodox use of lighting, and the disturbingly erotic manner in he presented his subjects, even biblical figures. A while later, Rembrandt studied under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, who taught him the chiaroscuro (light and darkness) technique. Shortly thereafter, Rembrandt returns to Leiden to set up his own studio, beginning work on a series of self-portraits. What sets Rembrandt's style apart from that of Lastman's is his composition; like in the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt's background composition remains dark, while his subject is illuminated in a manner which makes the image appear nearly three dimensional.
