Seurat, Georges
Georges Seurat (1859-1891), a Parisian, was a sculptor before studying at the School of Fine Arts. Becoming interested in the scientific aspects of light, he experimented with black and white drawings for several years before moving to the study of colour. His 1885 painting, La Grande Jatte, took more than 60 sessions - in contrast to the Impressionists who completed a picture in a single sitting. His style is sometimes inaccurately called Pointillism (his colour dots may be any shape and size, not pin-points), and is more properly neo-impressionism. Seurat died at the age of only 31 from a septic throat, leaving several hundred canvases and drawings. His legacy was his theory of construction through the solidity of light, and for a time Pissarro was greatly influenced by his work.

Imagine, Renoir said, Veronese's Marriage at Cana done in petit point. I cannot imagine it, but neither can I imagine Seurat's pictures painted in broad or blended strokes. Like his choice of tones, Seurat's technique is intensely personal. But the dots are not simply a technique; they are a tangible surface and the ground of important qualities, including his finesse. Too much has been written, and often incorrectly, about the scientific nature of the dots. The question whether they make a picture more or less luminous hardly matters. A painting can be luminous and artistically dull, or low-keyed in color and radiant to the mind. Besides, bow to paint brightly is no secret requiring a special knowledge of science. Like Van Gogh , Seurat could have used strong colors in big areas for a brighter effect. But without his peculiar means we would not have the marvelous delicacy of tone, the uncountable variations within a narrow range, the vibrancy and soft luster, which make his canvases, and especially his landscapes, a joy to contemplate. Nor would we have his surprising image-world where the continuous form is built up from the discrete, and the solid masses emerge from an endless scattering of fine points - a mystery of the coming-into-being for the eye. The dots in Seurat's paintings have something of the quality of the black grains in his

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Georges Seurat Georges Seurat: 1859 - 1891 Georges-Pierre Seurat was born in Paris on 2 December 1859, the son of comfortably-off parents. His father, a legal official, was a solitary man with a taciturn and withdrawn manner which his son also inherited. At every available opportunity, Antoine-Chrisostome took leave of his family and disappeared to his villa in the suburbs to grow flowers and say mass in the company of his gardener; he was only at home on Tuesdays. Seurat's mother was quiet and unassuming, but it was she who gave some warmth and continuity to his childhood. The family apartment was on the Boulevard de Magenta, close to the landscaped pleasure garden the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, where young Georges and his mother spent much of their spare time. Such places, and the people who frequented them, were to become the subject of some of his greatest paintings. THE HANDSOME STUDENT
As a young man Seurat was tall and handsome with "velvety eyes" and a quiet, gentle voice. Reserved and dignified in dress as well as manner, he was always neatly and correctly turned out: one friend described him as looking like a floor-walker in a department store, while the sophisticated and sharp-tongued Edgar Degas nicknamed him "the notary". He was serious and intense - preferring to spend his money on books rather than on food or drink - but his most pronounced characteristic was his secretiveness.

Georges Seurat (1859-1891)
One of the most famous painters of the Impressionist era, the short-lived French artist Georges Seurat is noted for his invention of the colourist technique known as Pointillism , a form of Divisionism, in which colours are placed side-by-side on the canvas and 'mixed' by the eye, rather than being mixed beforehand by the painter. In so doing, he pioneered the new style of Neo-Impressionism . As an organized reaction against Monet's Impressionism , Neo-Impressionism lasted only a few short years (1886-1891), but - thanks to both Seurat and his contemporary Paul Signac (1863-1935) - it had a major influence on later exponents of Post-Impressionism , including Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) a follower of Cloisonism; the expressionist Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90); the Fauvist Henri Matisse (1869-1954); and the American photorealist portrait painter Chuck Close (b.1940). Seurat is best known for his masterpieces

    Seurat, Georges
Seurat, Georges key , French neoimpressionist painter. He devised the pointillist technique of painting in tiny dots of pure color. His method, called divisionism, was a systematic refinement of the broken color of the impressionists. His major achievements are his Baignade (Art Inst., Chicago), completed two years later. He died of pneumonia at 31. Seurat is recognized as one of the most intellectual artists of his time and was a great influence in restoring harmonious and deliberate design and a thorough understanding of color combination to painting at a time when sketching from nature had become the mode. Other examples of Seurat's work are in the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pa., and in the Louvre. See catalog (ed. by A. Blunt and R. Fry, 1965); drawings (ed. by R. L. Herbert, 1966); complete paintings, ed. by J. Rewald and H. Dorra (1988); biographies by J. Russell (1985) and P. Courthion (1988). The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

One subject is SHARPNESS ?
As you can verify at http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/seurat_georges.html Georges Seurat is a famous French impressionist painter. There was recently an exhibition of Seurat drawings at the MOMA (in NYC) which included the image you can see by clicking http://www.flickr.com/photos/18453642@N04/2261040816/ . Look at it. The MOMA show was reviewed by John Updike, novelist and art major, who - in a way - gave "first place" to this image which is published in his article in the NY Review of Books, January 17, 2008.
Obviously, it is deliberately "out of focus." Out-of-focus is much less natural to painting than to photography, where we have a lens ready at all times to produce out-of-focus images. Yet this Seurat hangs in museums. My point is this: does a "tack-sharp" image (a favorite phrase of some judges) really represent a great achievement in this age of autofocus? Every xerox machine will also do it - every gorilla with autofocus - it is strictly mechanical - so what's so great about "tack sharpness."
Is it a virtue of a photograph to be sharp? The Seurat pictures could have been easily made with a camera. Should it be disqualified as "creative?" Is focusing more artistic In other words, should a creative entrant be free to submit out-of-focus work without "breaking rules?"
