      Culture
Aruba has its own distinct culture, which often includes celebrations. Color and music play an important role in the majority of cultural events, most notably in the yearly Carnival and Dia Di San Juan (St. John's Day) celebrations. Arubans dress in red and yellow traditional shirt and a black traditional trouser to represent fire during the Dia Di San Juan celebration. This celebration originates from a combination of pre-Christian Arawak harvest festivals and the works of Spanish missionaries to combine them with the celebration of San Juan. Aruba is the only country in the world that celebrates this day with dancing and singing. During the celebration a singer will chant a familiar "dera gai" (bury rooster) tune while players accompany the song with drum, violin, and local instrument called a wiri. While they sing, they will choose someone to come and try to hit a fake rooster with their eyes close. When that person hits it, in that rooster, it will bring a wonderful smell. This wonderful smell comes from the fruit (calabash). Arubans will often refer to Carnival as Bacchanal, a term based on the Greek and Roman celebrations dedicated to Dionysus for the Greeks and Bacchus for the Romans, their god of wine, vegetation, and cheer. Aruba's Bacchanalia shares some similarities with the ancient celebrations.

Aruba's culture has many influences from other countries. Many believe this to degrade Aruba's culture, but the Arubans see this blend as being one of the unique things of the Aruban culture. Old traditions are mixed with modern influences, but the Arubans have their own way of making the Aruban culture their own. Some original Aruban festivities include Betico Day, Dera Gay, and the day of the Flag and Anthem. Of course Aruba also celebrates the yearly carnival, and many families keep with the practice and festivities of the Catholic liturgical year. Today the Aruban population is mixed with people from South America (mainly Venezuela and Colombia), China and The Netherlands. These bring their own traditions and culture to the island. The desert-like land creates a landscape of cacti and brush with divi-divi trees. Postcards in Aruba are notorious for this scene with a tree leaning as a result of the constant trade wind. Aruba is known for beautiful beaches, gourmet dining, exciting nightlife, shopping, and water sports. This destination lives up to its motto of "One Happy Island" as a great place to be active. The scenery is a contrast of beach and ocean with rugged desert as you move inland. Aruba is governed by the Dutch and enjoys a stable economy with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the region. Back to Top ARUBA MAP ARUBA ACTIVITES Aruba's leeward coast offers good spots for diving and snorkeling where visibility can often reach 100 feet. Certified divers can go wall diving, reef diving, or explore wrecks. A variety of coral, lacy sea fans, sponges, and tropical fish await discovery underwater. Scuba rates cost about US $30 for a one-tank reef or wreck dive, US $45 for a two-tank dive, and US $35 for a night dive. Expect snorkeling gear to rent for US $15 per day, and snorkeling trips to cost US $25-35.

Expert: Andy Mendyk Question Hi Andy, What type of people live in Aruba? If you needed to write a condolence letter to someone in Aruba how would you address your letter and what would you say? Answer Hi Nancy! The best way for me to answer this is to say the people of Aruba are not much different than here in the U.S. Use the same format as you would normally write, but as for Arubans, they tend to be more Religious-natured. Arubans are very close-knit, and caring. They appreciate even the smallest of things. If there is anything else I can help you with, please do not hesitate to call on me again! Aruba Culture - A Treasure of People
By Dave Pipitone
Aruba is one of the many beautiful and stunning islands that make up the Caribbean with a distinct Aruba people. Aruba’s culture and people have many different backgrounds; from the Indians, to the Spanish, and lately the Dutch. However, through the years the place has become the abode of many different people. Many Arubans are linguists - speaking four languages namely English, Dutch, Papiamento, and Dutch, while in the same conversation. Papiamento is a tuneful language resulting from every Aruba culture that has impacted on the region, including hints of Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, and local Indian languages. Papiamento is spoken throughout the Netherlands Antilles but is more of Spanish-based on Aruba’s closer attachments with the South American mainland. For visitors of the place, an effort to use Papiamento words such as Bon Bini meaning welcome or Dushi meaning sweet or lovely, will delight your Aruban hosts. The Arawak legacy is stronger on Aruba culture than on most other Caribbean islands, although the native language and culture did not last long into the nineteenth century, and no full-blooded Indians remain. The features of most islanders clearly show their genetic heritage.

... Map of Aruba and Caribbean Visitor Tips Museums on Aruba Aruba's 88,000 inhabitants reflect it's history of settlement, acquisition, and immigration. The native Aruban population has ethnic roots in Arawak, African, and European peoples, reflected in the local foods, architecture, celebrations, and languages, and you'll find a healthy mix of expatriates, about 10,000, from Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America working in various industries on our island. Culturally, aruba has strong ties to Holland, it's colonial occupier and presen-day partner in the Netherlands kingdom. The official language of the island is Dutch, seen on street signs, government documents, and several local newspapers. English is spoken by most Arubans, particularly those in the tourism business. The island's lingua franca, however, is Papiamento, a lyrical language that envolved from Spanish and Portuguese, Dutch, some French, English, and a smattering of African languages. To the ear papaiamneto sounds a great deal like Spanish, and it's not surprising that Spanish-speaking visitors from Venezuela and other Latin American countries have little problem communicating on the island. The language is thought to have envolved in Curacao during the 16th century, when slaves and their Spanish owners developed common ground in which to communicate. Keeping in mind that spelling varies within the language, and among the islands that use it (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao).

Aruba's motto is "One Happy Island," and by all accounts, the residents prove this is so. Arubans are unanimously described as friendly and helpful. Dutch and Papiamento (a patois of Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French and African languages) are the official languages, but most everyone can also speak English. Like the residents of other tropical islands, Arubans dress casually much of the time. Writers say even the finest establishments have an "elegant casual" dress code, which means long pants for men and sundresses for women. Call ahead to find out if your restaurant enforces a dress code, and also inquire about the service charge some restaurants include a 10- to 15-percent charge on the bill that's distributed among the staff. To specially tip your waiter, leave the money on the table. Ten percent is considered acceptable. Aruba's official currency is the Aruban guilder. However, the U.S. dollar is widely accepted, and most items and services are priced in both currencies. Traveler's checks and major credit cards are also widely accepted.
