American Forces Information Service Until World War II, there had been little effort to document their contributions to United States history and culture. The following is an extract of significant dates in Asian Pacific American contributions to DoD and the nation that were compiled by Robert L. Worden of the Library of Congress for a calendar produced by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute: January 1-1969: Japanese American Army Staff Sgt. Rodney James Tadashi Yano earns posthumous Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam. 4-1913: Yonosuke Enouye dies; was an early Japanese American graduate of U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1891. 6-1916: Korean American Army Lt. Col. Herbert Choy born; becomes first Asian American named to federal court (U.S. Ninth Circuit Court, 1971). 16-1942: Army Sgt. Jose Calugas, a Filipino, earns Medal of Honor for heroism in the Philippines during World War II.

Military Officer
Taguba: "Hawaii opened my mind to the capabilities and opportunities in America. The diversity gave me a wide range to seek opportunities and to relate to other people." Army appoints its second Fil-Am general BY BERT ELJERA While the U.S. Armed Forces are often held up as models for racial integration in this country, that cannot be said of its officer corps, particularly among its generals and senior officers. Like the board rooms of most private corporations, generals of the major services predominantly are white malesalthough blacks have made some headway, most notably in the person of Gen. Colin Powell, the former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Asian Pacific Americans, however, are at the bottom of the totem pole in the military ranks. There is no APA flag officer on active duty in the U.S. Navy or general in the U.S. Air Force; the same is true for the U.S. Marines. But, the U.S. Army seems to be a more hospitable ground for APAs. A lieutenant general and a brigadier general are actively serving, and a third general is going through the confirmation process and is likely to get his star in the next few weeks.

Rich Cho Becomes The First Asian American General Manager In NBA History
Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Is it just me or are we really starting to come up in the NBA - even if just a little? I mean you have Erik Spoelstra who's coaching a dream team and now you have Rich Cho who's becoming the first Asian American NBA General Manager (not to mention the growing Jeremy Lin fanbase).
Hmmm...yeah - I think so.
New Trail Blazers general manager Rich Cho says while he's impressed with Portland's youth and depth, the team is still lacking the piece that will bring the city another championship. Cho, who spent nine seasons as an assistant general manager with the Oklahoma City Thunder, was introduced as the Blazers' GM on Monday. He replaces Kevin Pritchard, who helped usher the team out of the Jail Blazers era several years ago but was ultimately dismissed last month [...]
Cho interviewed with Blazers owner Paul Allen, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, last week in Helsinki, Finland. Allen, still traveling in Europe, said in a statement: "Rich has depth of character, a foundation in business and legal matters and a knowledge of the game of NBA basketball that will help our team get even better. He is part of the new generation of NBA executives.

Formal usage was introduced by academics in the early 1970s, notably by historian

Three Asian Americans Vying to be CA Attorney General
Mon, 05/04/2009 - 23:46 There's a big battle brewing in California and it involves three of the most promising young Asian American politicians in the state. State Assembly Members Ted Lieu (53rd AD) and Alberto Torrico (20th AD), along with San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris , have all announced they are running to be California Attorney General in 2010. The other main candidate is Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo While it's always exciting to see exciting Asian American candidates move up the political food chain, particularly good progressives, I can't help but wonder if this is a sign of progress for our community or political suicide for all three to be running for the same office.

Looking back on his school days, Cho says the groundwork laid by his teachers in junior high, high school, and college provided him with the ability and knowledge to succeed in the real world. During his seventh-grade year, a teacher named Mrs. Hanson helped him develop a solid foundation for his writing skills. Those skills have helped him immensely in college, law school and also with sponsors and license holders. He also credits his geometry teacher at Lakota and his algebra teacher at Decatur for stimulating his interest in math, also essential in his job.

Prof. Salt - New int'l market - Persian, Asian, American
Dear Professor Salt, In follow up to your interest in a Persian food, try the new market in Irvine called Wholesome Choice. See, www.wholesomechoice.com I thought they may have Persian cookbooks for you, but all I saw were magazines for cooking instruction - vegetarian cooking, Gourmet, eating light, and a few others - all near the checkout stand. No Persian cookbook, though. So, don┬Тt go there if that┬Тs what your looking for. But, go for the Persian food and ingredients. And, maybe a hot Persian lunch (or some Asian or Mexican, too They have a good food ┬Уdeli┬Ф that they call a food court (hot to go or packaged and labelled). Their deli yoghurt/cucumber mix is excellent (much better than Trader Joe's IMHO). I had some of their deli tabooli also, but it was rather dry - easily fixed. The chef brought out fresh salmon to grill up for the dinner menu - 2 sides and a main dish for $4.99. Their deli-made vegetable pizza ($1.59 slice) was good. I┬Тm going back to try their hot Persian food. I suppose its not as good a Ferdussi, but its a deli.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

For twenty-five years, middle-grade readers have been moved by this telling of Sadako Sasaki's spirited battle with leukemia. She was two-years-old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II, and dizzy spells began when she was twelve. She faced the disease with an irrepressible spirit and focused her energy (and that of everyone who knew her) on folding 1000 paper cranes, which Japanese legend held would prompt the gods to make her well again. Eleanor Coerr crafted this story of Sadako's twelfth year after reading the book of her letters her classmates compiled after her death.
This special edition contains a bio of Eleanor Coerr with details about her work on this book and instructions for folding paper cranes.
