Main article: Asian American Asian American history is the history of multiple ethnic groups with distinctive histories, but also the common history of groups often affected by the same laws and a culture that often saw them as one racial group. Since the late 1960s and 1970s, many activists and academics referred to an "Asian American movement" similar to the civil rights movement to refer to efforts across different Asian groups to promote their common welfare. In the latter 20th century, spurred by the 1965 Immigration Act, Asians from many different groups immigrated in larger numbers, often arriving as college students, or skilled workers with degrees. Their image of success was portrayed with headlines of the "Model Minority".
    edit Hostility
The Chinese arrived in the U.S. in large numbers on the West Coast in the 1850s and 1860s; they encountered very strong opposition—violent in the case of the Chinese. Riots and physical attacks forced the Chinese out of the gold mines. The

Society Marks Asian Pacific American History Month May is Asian Pacific American History Month, and USCHS organized several programs with an APA theme. First, as part of the ongoing Yielding the Floor oral history project , several additional interviews with Members of Congress are available on this website. The more recent additions are Representatives Mike Honda (D-CA) and David Wu (D-OR). Keep checking the website; more interviews are in the works. Interviewees have talked about everything from childhood experiences in WWII internment camps to their time in Congress and the Cabinet. Second, on Tuesday, May 8, the Society hosted an Asian Pacific American Public Service Youth Forum. A select group of DC-area middle and high school students got an overview of Asian American history, interacted with a panel of Asian American Congressional staffers, and listened to former Senator Norm Mineta discuss his experiences with Japanese American internment and on September 11, 2001, when he was serving as secretary of transportation. The students eagerly asked questions of Mineta and took pictures with him to commemorate the occasion. The day wound up with three teams competing to answer questions about Asian American history and U.S. civics. Stuart-Hobson Middle School history teacher Amy Trenkle noted that her students “had a marvelous time” and “were just buzzing about it” when they returned to school. “It really boosted their confidence!” Finally, the Society followed up the Youth Forum with a noontime lecture by Dr. Franklin Odo on Thursday, May 10. Dr. Odo, Director of the Smithsonian Institution Asian Pacific American Program, also spoke at the Youth Forum. At this second lecture, he surveyed the audience for specific questions about his topic, Hawai’i’s transition to statehood, and based his talk on those questions. Check to website for soon-to-be-announced details about our annual August lecture series, on Wednesdays at noon, and for future lectures commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month and American Indian Heritage Month.

Asian American History: Readings in Theory and Historiography
As I have been quite fortunate to study Asian American history with a series of great teachers, I take seriously the responsibility to train others in the field. Most of the students I have advised in Asian American history have had a chance to serve as a graduate student instructor for my Asian American history survey after taking an advanced readings course in Asian American historiography. Here is the syllabus for the graduate class. The reading list, which is constantly being updated, has been shaped by the input of many colleagues.
    Course Overview
Through extensive readings in Asian/Pacific American history, this course will survey scholarship dating from the origins of ethnic studies in the 1960s to the present. Our discussions will focus on the following questions: How does the study of Asian Americans challenge historians to rethink issues of race, class, and gender? Why and how did the original vision of Asian American Studies emphasize social history and community studies? What have Asian American historians learned from interdisciplinary approaches? How have literary theory and cultural studies influenced recent and current work? What is the future direction of the field? Course readings will help prepare you to teach classes in Asian/Pacific American history from the time of early migrations to the present. Groups to be examined include Korean, Filipino, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Chinese, and Japanese Americans. Readings in theory and historiography are designed to help graduate students frame and conceptualize research projects involving Asian American history. Course materials and discussions are also relevant to students engaging fields such as U.S. history, comparative race/ethnicity, immigration, U.S./Asia relations, and Asian diasporic communities.

    Asian-American History
From Chinese laborers in the 1800s to millions of U.S. citizens today
by David Johnson When they first arrived in the United States, Asian (usually Chinese) immigrants were welcomed, or at least tolerated. After the California gold rush brought thousands of Chinese to California, however, Asian immigrants faced restrictive laws and occasional violence. In the late 1800s, Chinese, and eventually other Asians, were excluded from citizenship . These laws were repealed during World War II , followed by further immigration-law changes, making it easier for Asians to enter the United States. Today, Asian immigrants have a high rate of assimilation and participation in the American mosaic.
    Gold Rush Boom
The Chinese were the first Asians to arrive in large numbers. By the 1830s, Chinese were selling goods in New York City and toiling in Hawaiian sugarcane fields. Gold was discovered in California in 1848, eventually attracting thousands of Chinese miners and contract laborers. In 1850, just
