Asian American Media Presence

The Asian American voice in the media is severely lacking. Why does this affect you and what can you do about it?
Whenever I turn on the TV, it seems that I always see black people. Black people are absolutely dominating American media. Look at America now.
Our president is Black. (Obama) Our top female talk host is Black. (Oprah) Our top music artists are black. (Rihanna, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, Usher) Our top athletes are black. (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Reggie Bush) Just a hundred years ago, America had Jim Crow laws that were specifically discriminating against Blacks. Another fifty years back and the American white man had been using Black people as slaves.

NAATA Changes Name to Center For Asian American Media
After 25 years as the National Asian American Telecommunications Association (NAATA) , the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the organization to CENTER FOR ASIAN AMERICAN MEDIA. While the name of the organization has changed*, their mission remains the same - to inform and educate the general public about the Asian American experience through film and public television, to advocate for increasing the presence of Asian Americans and the accuracy of the portrayals of them in mainstream media, and to fund Asian American media. They will continue to present the celebrated San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, award grants to Asian American projects and filmmakers through our Media Fund, distribute Asian American and Asian films and curricula to educational institutions, and help program important Asian American documentaries on public television. The name "Center for Asian American Media" was chosen to better reflect what they do and where they are headed. When the organization was established in 1980 as the National Asian American Telecommunications Association, the term "telecommunications" referred to satellite transmission of broadcast television. The founding members comprised an association of media arts organizations and activists. They soon became one national organization - a center for funding, producing, presenting and distributing Asian American media.
