Appendices, Illustration, Notes, Bibliography, Index. doi:10.1017/S0022463406230996 This book is a much needed and welcome contribution to the field, as no attempt has been made to update pre-colonial Southeast Asian warfare comprehensively from a regional approach since H. G. Quaritch Wales's Ancient South-East Asian warfare (London: Bernard Quaritch, 1952). It argues for the significance of indigenous and innovative Southeast Asian style warfare and the limited effectiveness of foreign technology (particularly gunpowder) before the nineteenth century. Archaeology - Graduate program school ranking
Expert: Ralph Salier Question QUESTION: Hello Ralph, I am asking today if you would be able to answer a question about ranking prospective schools that I have looked into for some preliminary research involving graduate programs. I am completing a BA in Anthropology focusing on Archaeology at the University of Washington at this point, my notable professors have been Dr. Grayson, Dr. Peter Lape, Dr. Angela Close, and Dr. Marcos Llobera. At this time I am still having a little waver in EXACTLY what I want to emphasize, my exposure being primarily GIS, zooarchaeology, some lithics, and classical Israel excavation, but the schools that I have narrowed my search down to at this time are: University of Connecticut Boston University Pittsburgh University Pennsylvania State University I was hoping you could give me a possible ranking and explanation if you are familiar with those schools in regards to their graduate programs. Right now I am mostly interested in an MA as an additional full 8 years towards a PhD is a little daunting to me at this moment. I certainly am interested in the PhD program, but funding is a huge concern for me, as all of these institutions are very expensive compared to my current budget at the University of Washington.

Welcome to our site.
I'd like to thank LeeAnn and Angela from Spirited History for having me on their program. I hope thier listeners found the information interesting. In the news: IUSSA was quoted in the Boston Globe and Boston.com
The USS Salem was ordered in 1943, launched in 1947 and finally commissioned in 1949. She served 10 years before she was sent to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet and finally made her way to Quincy in 1994 to become part of the Naval Ships Association.
In May of 1780 James Robertson and his party built a fort on a bluff overlooking the Cumberland River. Over the next few years the folks who came to live in and around the fort discussed laying out a proper town for a settlement. In May of 1784 lawmakers passed an act at the behest of James Robertson, who had been elected to the General Assembly, that a town must be laid out near the fort. The fort was named Nashborough after General Francis Nash from NC, who had fought during the Revolutionary War.
During the seige of Boston many fortifications were built around the city. Most were simple earthworks. The Roxbury Upper Fort was said to be one of the best built at the time. Sadly, it was demolished to make way for a water tower and talkof rebuilding the fort as a sort of 'living history' monument never amounted to much.

All around us, the Mogollon Rim is a wilderness of ethereal beauty, carved majestically into unmatched proportions. To our north and accessible from Highway 87 north of Strawberry, the Rim Road, FR 300, is a twisting, graveled legacy to settlers and cavalry tenacity. The community of Pine was settled in 1879 by Mormon pioneers, who endured many hardships during their settlement of this untamed country. But through their determination and faith, Pine survived. Much of what is displayed in the Pine-Strawberry Museum today is in tribute to the dedication and hard work of our founding families.

Archeological Remote Sensing
Now more than ever, archeological research is interdisciplinary: botany, forestry, soil science, hydrology - all of which contribute to a more complete understanding of the earth, climate shifts, and how people adapt to large regions. As a species, we've been literally blind to the universe around us. If the known electromagnetic spectrum were scaled up to stretch around the Earth's circumference, the human eye would see a portion equal to the diameter of a pencil. Our ability to build detectors that see for us where we can't see, and computers that bring the invisible information back to our eyesight, will ultimately contribute to our survival on Earth and in space. Remote sensing can be a discovery technique, since the computer can be programmed to look for distinctive "signatures" of energy emitted by a known site or feature in areas where surveys have not been conducted. Such "signatures" serve as recognition features or fingerprints. Such characteristics as elevation, distance from water, distance between sites or cities, corridors, and transportation routes can help to predict the location of potential archeological sites.

Louis Dupree
Professor Louis Dupree
Professor Louis Dupree was an American anthropologist who specialized in Afghan studies and is author of Afghanistan (3rd ed., Princeton, N.J., 1980) which has served as the primary source on the history and culture of the country. Professor Dupree was born in.Greenville, N.C., on 23 August 1925. During World War II Dupree joined the U.S. Merchant Marine, but toward the end of the war he transferred to the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He was stationed in the Philippines, where he fought with native guerrilla units behind Japanese lines, an experience that he later credited with having inspired his interest in ethnology. After the war Dupree studied Asian archeology and ethnology at Harvard University, receiving his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in 1949, 1953, and 1955 respectively. Although he had intended to return to the Philippines, the rejection of his research application by the Philippine government and a fortuitous invitation to join an archeological survey in Afghanistan in the summer of 1949 led to his lifelong interest in southwestern Asia. Following the completion of his Ph.D. degree Dupree taught at the Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base and Pennsylvania State University. Between 1959 and 1983 he he was affiliated with the American Universities Field Staff (A
