As an example of the economic value of space resources, let's consider the smallest known M-type asteroid, the near-Earth asteroid known as 3554 Amun (two kilometers in diameter): The iron and nickel in Amun have a market value of about $8,000 billion, the cobalt content adds another $6,000 billion, and the platinum-group metals add another $6,000 billion.

There are two things you need to know about asteroids:
      • Asteroids can make us extinct (the threat) Planetary Defense Library and Links Asteroids can make us rich and provide homes for trillions of people (the promise).
      The Promise
There are vast numbers of asteroids in near-Earth orbits, some of which are easier to access than the Moon. The potential mineral wealth of these asteroids is so great that huge profits could be made once we can start mining them for materials to be sold to markets on Earth. Like space solar power , this is one of the potential revenue sources for the large startup costs for the first space settlements.

Asteroids Where They Are The vast majority of asteroids are grouped in the asteroid belt, which is more like a loose grouping than a belt, and lies between 1.8 and 4.5 A.U. (1 A.U. is the average distance between Earth and the sun ) from the sun - between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter . The asteroids are so small and far away that they appear as faint stars, if they even appear at all; no asteroid is bright enough to be seen without some optical aid, except Ceres (see below) on its closest approach to Earth. km . Even if there are 1000 times more asteroids than we know of today, then on average each asteroid would have over one million km to itself. But, there are asteroids all over the solar system they are not just confined to the belt. Their location only indicates what kind of orbit they have, as most asteroids look pretty much the same, such as the image of Gaspra on the right. There are also many asteroids that gallivant around the solar system on highly elliptical orbits like comets. Of note, the asteroid Icarus, when closest to the sun, lies within Mercury's orbit - it comes close enough to the sun that Relativity must be taken into account in order to accurately predict its orbit. Another example is Hildago, whose closest approach is between the orbit of Mars and Earth, and its farthest from the sun between

Xbox 360 Players Wikipedia has an article about: Asteroids (computer game) Asteroids was the product of Atari employees Lyle Rains and Ed Logg. At the time of Asteroid's creation, Atari was making forays into vector display technology. At the time, Vector displays could produce sharper details than (typical) raster displays, so it was seen as a popular display alternative for video games. One other company, Cinematronics , had already experimented with vector graphics in 1977 in their arcade interpretation of the famous MIT game Space Wars . Though vector graphics eventually disappeared from the arcades in 1986, a few other companies joined Atari and Cinematronics at making vector games, but no one made nearly as many as these first two companies. ↓ Jump to Table of Contents ↓ One of Atari's first attempts with vector graphics was a game known as Lunar Lander . In Lunar Lander, you attempted to pilot a craft to land safely on the surface of the moon. It was the graphical adaptation of a popular text game that circulated around academic computer science programs. Lunar Lander sold poorly and Atari decided to abandon the game's production in favor of a better game that was rising in popularity. Lyle Rains and Ed Logg had developed a game so addictive that several Atari employees would wait in line for a chance to play. The interruptions to their work became so frequent that they had to build a separate prototype just for their coworkers to play on so that they could continue their work. When they were done, Asteroids was released to the arcades and proceeded to get so many quarters that arcade operators had to increase the size of the containers they were using to catch all of the money. It was seen as a game that would knock

Some asteroids called Trojan asteroids travel in or near Jupiter's orbit about 60 degrees ahead of Jupiter and 60 degrees behind Jupiter (gravity balance points between Jupiter and the Sun). Some asteroids have orbits that bring them close to Earth's orbit, some even crossing the Earth's orbit. These are called Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) and include some 1132 (at time of writing) " Potentially Hazardous Asteroids " with the greatest potential of very close approaches to Earth. Comets that get near the Earth and NEAs are lumped together in Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) A plot of the known asteroids is available at the Minor Planet Center. About one million of them are larger than 1 kilometer across. Those smaller than about 300 kilometers across have irregular shapes because their internal gravity is not strong enough to compress the rock into a spherical shape. The largest asteroid is Ceres with a diameter of 1000 kilometers. Pallas and Vesta have diameters of about 500 kilometers and about 15 others have diameters larger than 250 kilometers. The number of asteroids shoots up with decreasing size. The combined mass of all of the asteroids is about 32 times less than the Moon's mass (with Ceres making up over a third of the total). Very likely the asteroids are pieces that would have formed a planet if Jupiter's strong gravity had not stirred up the material between Mars and Jupiter. The rocky chunks collided at speeds too high to stick together and grow into a planet.

History Asteroids was inspired, in a roundabout way, by the seminal Spacewar! , the first computer-based video game. In 1977 a stand-up arcade game version was produced as Space Wars , which included a number of optional versions and added a floating asteroid as a visual device. Asteroids is essentially a one-player version of Spacewar!, featuring the "wedge" ship from the original and promoting the asteroids to be the main opponent. The game was conceived by Lyle Rains and programmed and designed by Ed Logg Asteroids was a hit in the United States and became Atari's best selling game of all time. Atari had been in the process of releasing another vector beam game, Lunar Lander , but demand for Asteroids was so high they stopped further production of Lunar Lander so they could begin building Asteroids . The first 200 Asteroids machines were sent out in Lunar Lander cabinets.

Recently it seems that more games has been trying to jump on the classic-game-conversion bandwagon, a fad that started around the time that Hasbro made some big bucks with their Frogger conversion. Some conversions, like Activision's Battlezone , took a few "creative liberties" and added a whole slew of new technology available in this day and age, while others, like Hasbro's Frogger or Centipede stayed relatively close to their predecessors. Asteroids , Activision's latest classic conversion, leans more towards the latter - there are the obvious improvements in graphics, and sound, but the game's basic gameplay stays relatively the same. Now, if you aren't aware of how Asteroids is played, well, I represent the entire gaming community when I hang my head in despair.

    Flying Up to Meet Asteroids
A proposed NASA mission to intercept an ill-omened rock in the sky By Rebecca Boyle Posted 03.25.2009 at 11:56 am 7 Comments
Asteroid Ida and Its Moon, Dactyl NASA Partly to help explain solar eclipses, the ancient Egyptians had a story about the serpent god Apep, the Uncreator, who tried to swallow the sun god Ra as he crossed the sky. Apep the Greeks called him Apophis personified death, destruction and chaos. His opponent was the goddess Ma'at, who represented all that was light and truth. Now, a group of NASA scientists is hoping Ma'at will once again help humans ward off the harbinger of destruction. The MAAT satellite Measurement and Analysis of Apophis Trajectory, a conveniently descriptive acronym is still just an idea. But if it's built, the modestly priced probe could help illuminate one of the solar system's most famous and most misunderstood asteroids. A few months after its discovery in June 2004, asteroid 99942 Apophis was briefly thought to pose a serious threat to Earth in either 2029 or 2036. But further calculations showed it is unlikely to hit the planet, unless it passes through a gravitational "keyhole" that might send it swinging Earthward seven years after its initial visit.

    Description
Unlike Activision's earlier remake of an Atari arcade classic, Battlezone , this one stays close to its namesake. Take the original, Atari coin-op game Asteroids, add in the features of the Atari 2600 cartridge, then give it 3-D graphics and a bunch of power-ups, and you've got Activision's Asteroids remake.
You are an employee of the Astro-Mining Corporation. Your mission is to simply go to an assigned area of space and clear the area of asteroids and the occassional debris. The game consists of five zones, each with a different background and some with special features. Each zone has 15 levels. In addition to the standard asteroids, there are also mined asteroids that explode; indestructible asteroids that are, well, indestructible; fireball comets; crystal asteroids that regenerate; alien egg asteroids containing deadly baby space worms; and ancient energy asteroids that shoot back! And there's plenty of enemies in addition to the asteroids, such as Standard and Super Saucers, Asteroids Tugs, Fuel Transports, Hexes, Nuke Drivers, and Vulturoids.
