  • A rocky or metallic object, generally smaller than a planet but bigger than a meteoroid , that orbits the Sun or another star. Asteroids are also called minor planets. The largest asteroid, Ceres , however, has been classified as a dwarf planet
More than 20,000 asteroids have been given official designations, most of them in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter . Asteroids outside this belt include the Trojans , which share Jupiter's orbit, and the near-Earth asteroids . A number of different asteroid groups have been distinguished on the basis of their similar orbital characteristics. Other sub-planetary objects, considered distinct from asteroids, are Centaurs Kuiper Belt objects , and comets , though classification is ambiguous in some cases. Some of the smaller moons in the solar system appear to be captured asteroids, including the two moons of Mars, and a number of the outer moons of the four gas giants.

    • About Asteroids Asteroids, also called minor planets or planetoids, are heavenly bodies composed of rock or metal. These irregularly shaped objects orbit the sun, as does the Earth, with the majority of asteroids located in an orbital path between the planets Mars and Jupiter. Asteroids are devoid of any atmosphere. Of the approximately 40,000 known... How to Observe an Asteroid Asteroids are among the most numerous objects in the solar system, with the current number (as of 2007) above 1.1 million total asteroids. Even so, most of the asteroids in the sky are incredible small and dim, making them tough to observe. Only a few of the known asteroids are observable (Vesta and 1Ceres among them). If you wish to... How to Win at Asteroids Asteroids is one of those games that is just plain fun. It sticks with you, you yearn for it and you always want to get a higher score than last time. About the Asteroid Belt The asteroid belt is an area between Jupiter and Mars that contains as many as 1 million chunks of rock and metal called asteroids. These bodies circle the sun in an elliptical-shaped orbit. Some asteroids are as large as Texas while others are the size of a pebble.

Meteors The term meteor comes from the Greek meteoron, meaning phenomenon in the sky. It is used to describe the streak of light produced as matter in the Solar System falls into Earth's atmosphere creating temporary incandescence resulting from atmospheric friction. A meteoroid is matter revolving around the sun or any object in interplanetary space that is too small to be called an asteroid or a comet. Even smaller particles are called micrometeoroids or cosmic dust grains, which includes any interstellar material that should happen to enter our solar system. A meteorite is a meteoroid that reaches the surface of the Earth without being completely vaporized. Meteor's come in a range of sizes, from dust-sized which we see as reflected sunlight in the orbital plane of the Solar System (called zodiacal light) to house-sized. When a meteor enters the atmosphere friction causes ablation of its surface (i.e. it burns up). If the meteor is small (fist-sized) it vaporizes before hitting the ground. If larger it survives to impact on the ground, although it will be reduced in size during entry into the atmosphere. About 25 million meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere every day (duck!). Most burn up and about 1 million kilograms of dust per day settles to the Earth's surface.

New worlds in our solar system
Asteroids and comets form the largest and, perhaps paradoxically, the least well known population of celestial bodies in our solar system. The shortage of detailed information is mainly due to the fact that, because of the large interplanetary distances, disk-resolved images can be obtained only of a limited number of these targets. Nevertheless, our view of this population has started to change dramatically. Spacecraft images and radar observations, though few and far between, have already revealed to us that asteroids come in just about all possible shapes, configurations, and structures. The need for a large number of detailed asteroid models is now pressing, so all possible data sources are valuable. A hitherto much unused but major and easily available source of information on small solar system bodies consists of their photometric lightcurves, i.e., measurements of their total brightnesses that vary as the viewing/illumination geometry changes. The inverse problem of determining the object's shape, its rotational state, and the scattering properties of its surface from lightcurves is notoriously demanding. We have shown that advanced methods can produce detailed asteroid models that are even comparable to those obtained with radar imaging. Our results also match the `ground truth' from the few space probe fly-by missions very well, so the inversion method has been well tested. Indeed, we can now well say that

  • The following is an updated version of a list of asteroid groups and families that I posted on the Minor Planet Mailing List. I posted it in hopes of getting some corrections, and I got quite a few via the list and private mail. Tim Spahr posted some useful data, including the following distinction between groups and families: "...[Groups are] loose dynamical associations. Families are different and result from the catastrophic breakup of a large parent asteroid sometime in the past. Prominent families are Eos (a = 3.1, e = 0.1, i = 10) Themis (a = 3.1, e = 0.1, i = 1), and Koronis (a = 2.87, e = 0.05, i = 1). Notice on the MPC plot that groups are loose regions, families are very tight groupings. And note that these are osculating orbital elements. When proper elements are considered, the groups and families change shape, in general the families become very tight clumps." In addition to the MPC plots, this

At this page I show distinctions between various asteroid and comet groups (up to date Apr. 7, 2005) in a graphical mode. The descriptions of the individual groups can be found at Gérard Faure's excellent page DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM OF ASTEROIDS The properties and members of main comet groups are summarized at Yan Fernandez's page List of Jupiter-Family and Halley-Family Comets . Orbital elements of comets are taken from Roman Maňák's catalogue The main asteroid groups are distinguished by colours introduced in a legend at the top left corner of every image. Asteroids positions are computed for Apr. 7, 2004 and their orbital elements are taken from the MPCOrb database. There are three general representations of the groups below: views of the solar system with respect to an external observer, animations showing the particular groups individually, and positions of asteroids in an orbital elements space, respectively. For clarity, all pictures and animation are separated for inner and outer part of the solar system.
On the majority of images, pointing the mouse cursor out some objects will show its name or provisional designation.
