Jim is a Computer Software Engineer for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Center of Astrogeology in Flagstaff, Arizona. For the past 16 years, he has been busy creating software that helps process the extraordinary images that NASA and other government agencies are constantly collecting from various space probes. Currently, Jim is developing software for processing images from the THEMIS instrument on board the Mars Odyssey spacecraft (a probe that has been orbiting Mars for several months now), the

The Space Shuttle Videos Astrogeology, the science that applies the principles of geology to the study of solid bodies of the solar system other than the earth. Using the techniques of geophysics, geochemistry, and other fields of geology, scientists can learn about the composition, structure, and development of such bodies as the moon and the various planets and their satellites. Scientific data and photographs transmitted to earth by space probes are important sources of information in astrogeology. Another valuable source of information is the direct analysis of meteorites and of rock samples from the moon. Related Topics Ecliptic Seasons Day

The Astrogeology Research Program is a team of over 80 research scientists, cartographers, computer scientists, administrative staff, students, contractors, and volunteers working to support the efforts to explore, map, and understand our solar system. Fields of particular interest are mapping, planetary geologic processes, remote sensing and monitoring, and scientific analysis. These quests to find answers to our questions about our solar system not only lead to a greater understanding of our neighboring planets, but of our own planet, Earth. Earth Surface Processes
The western region of the United States is the most geologically active and varied part of the country. The role of the team is to provide the geologic information to aid in understanding the interactions among humans, plants, animals, air, water, soil, and rock on the Earth's surface. The team is composed of geologists, geophysicists, paleontologists, and support personnel located in Flagstaff and throughout the western states.

The Geologic History of the Moon (Wilhelms, 1987) and To a Rocky Moon Our story begins with a brief summary (taken from Wilhelms, 1993) of the pioneering astrogeologic research activities that took place at Coon Butte/Coon Mountain, or Barringer Meteorite Crater (Meteor Crater) just east of Flagstaff from the late Nineteenth Century to the Early Twentieth Century. This is followed by a summary of the early considerations by prominent scientists of the Twentieth Century regarding the probable origin of lunar craters (impact versus volcanic) and speculations on the geology of the Moon. This publication consists of a text portion as a PDF file that has links to 10 other PDFs comprising figures, tables, and appendixes. This report has a total of 1161 pages.
