Astronomers, amateur skywatchers find new planet 15,000 light years away
Andrew Gould
Click here for a high resolution photograph. COLUMBUS, Ohio An international collaboration featuring Ohio State University astronomers has detected a planet in a solar system that, at roughly 15,000 light years from Earth, is one of the most distant ever discovered. In a time when technology is starting to make such finds almost commonplace, this new planet which is roughly three times the size of Jupiter is special for several reasons, said Andrew Gould, professor of astronomy at Ohio State . The technique that astronomers used to find the planet worked so well that he thinks it could be used to find much smaller planets Earth-sized planets, even very distant ones. And because two amateur astronomers in New Zealand helped detect the planet using only their backyard telescopes, the find suggests that anyone can become a planet hunter. Gould and his colleagues have submitted a paper announcing the planet to Astrophysical Journal Letters, and have posted the paper on a publicly available Internet preprint server, http://arXiv.org

Ohio State researchers may have found the origin of supermassive black holes

Astronomers, amateur and professional, all over the world know how stellar-mass black holes form . However, when it comes to the supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies, scientists are, literally, largely in the dark about how these monsters millions of times more massive than the Sun form, until now. Recently, researchers at Ohio State University, using computer models, have provided one possible explanation as to how the monster black holes are created. Answer: galaxies in collision. Recently, post-doctoral Ohio State researcher Dr. Stelios Kazantzides , working with colleagues at OSU's Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particle Physics , came up with the theory after simulating the merging of galaxies using highly advanced computer models. Early in the history of the universe, perhaps within 1 billion years of the Big Bang, the first, massive galaxies, some over 100 tiles the size of our own Milky Way, formed. These giant galaxies are believed to have been populated by giant stars in therealm of around 300 solar masses. Like today, the universe was expanding at the time of these massive, early galaxies. Then as now, galaxies sometimes collide. Obviously, the gravitational forces involved in such collisions would be extreme. It is these forces of the collisions that, in theory, formed the supermassive black holes.

Light Pollution
The Bane of Astronomers (Amateur and Professional)
The view almost all of us had from home only 25 - 50 years ago... and what the vast majority of Americans now see from their backyard. These photos show approximately the same area of the sky; one was taken from a dark sky site and one was taken from outside a small city (Springfield, MA). Which scene do you find more appealing? Would you be pleased to learn that you as a taxpayer are likely paying money to produce some of the scourge seen on the right?
New Feature!
Click the above graphic to see some of the best and worst examples of lighting in Wilbraham MA.
Introduction
Light Pollution is a serious problem for most amateur astronomers today (see the pictures just above). The picture on the left was taken at a dark sky location (Colebrook, CT USA); the photo on the right was taken from Wilbraham MA USA looking towards Springfield, MA (A city of about 200,000 people). The light pollution in the Springfield MA area is very bad (and Springfield is considered a small city by most people). Unless you live way worse visibility because of the excessive glare they produce. Everyone can benefit from improved lighting; lower tax bills, less air pollution, improved visibility and more. It is in the best interest of everyone to reduce light pollution!
