The Gemini Observatory With funding and support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Gemini Observatory AMPATH , a Florida International University international Internet exchange point to research institutions in South America. Under development for almost five years, this link allows Gemini to move forward towards its goal of becoming the world's first "cyber observatory." According to Peter Michaud, Public Information and Outreach Manager for the Gemini Observatory, "A virtual ribbon cutting on August 13, 2002 officially inaugurated the new link between the twin observatories. This link will allow astronomers to access skies in both the northern and southern hemispheres without having to travel to Hawaii or Chile."

Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Cub Scouts Star Party Schedule ... Locations Scout Clinic Announcements Scout Merit Badge Clinics: Scout leaders, would you like RAC to conduct a star party or merit badge teaching clinic for your scouts? Please contact scouting coordinator Glenn Holliday to request RAC support. No astronomy clinics for scouts are currently scheduled. Announcements will be posted in the RAC News section of the RAC home page , and details of planned clinics and other events will be described here. RAC Scout Teaching Clinics RAC is especially active in teaching astronomy to Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. Glenn has conducted many merit badge clinics, and he has developed an extensive curriculum that takes merit badge candidates from the basics to advanced material. Leigh Gettier , RAC's beginners coordinator, also assists Glenn. Events for scouts are announced in the news section at the top-center of the RAC home page . Scouting astronomy clinics are usually timed to coincide with one of the club's monthly star parties . Scouts attend the clinic during an afternoon of learning and then spend a few hours observing with RAC club members under the stars, putting their new found knowledge to immediate use. Scout groups are also welcome to attend any RAC star party even if a teaching clinic is not in progress.

Astronomy Activities for Kids
By Kathryn Hatter eHow Contributor updated: December 1, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Astronomy Astronomy Activities for Kids Many children learn best by seeing and doing rather than by just hearing dry information. Delight children and encourage interest in astronomy by organizing astronomy activities that will not only teach, but entertain. After engaging in these astronomy activities, kids will be budding astronomers ready to conquer outer space with their enthusiasm.
Test Your New Invention
  • Help children to pretend they have just invented a new material for use in outer space. As is the typical protocol, any new inventions must be tested extensively on earth before use in outer space, and this activity will help children experience this on a small level. In this experiment, kids will be testing a new material that has been designed for protecting spacecraft fuel tanks from the extreme conditions of outer space.
Make sure an adult is present to assist with this activity. Gather an empty soda can, a medium balloon, scissors, a rubber band, and 1/4 cup of boiling water. Cut the top 1/3 off of the balloon. Remove the pop tab from the can and carefully pour the boiling water into the can. Stretch the large part of the balloon over the entire top of the can and secure the balloon onto the can with the rubber band.
