The Very Small Array ASTROPHYSICS Introduction to the VSA The Very Small Array is a custom-built radio telescope (operating between 26-36 GHz), designed expressly to make high resolution observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales around and below one degree. This radiation is the relic of the Big Bang fireball, and contains the tiny (one 100,000th of a degree centigrade at most) fluctuations that are the imprints of the very start of the formation of structures, such as galaxies, in the Universe. This means that we are able to use these observations to answer some of the fundamental questions about the origin of such structures, and to determine some of the key cosmolgical parameters that describe our Universe, such as its density, matter content and rate of expansion. The project is a collaboration between the Astrophysics Group at the Cavendish Laboratories (Cambridge University), the Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories (Jodrell Bank, Manchester University) and the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (Tenerife).

Elqui Valley The Elqui Valley is home to a mountain basin, located in the Region of Coquimbo, about 90 km from La Serena and 470 km north of Santiago, whose river (Elqui river) flows into the sea after traveling 140 km from the Andes mountains. Major tributaries of the Elqui River are the Claro and Turbio rivers. This valley is located one of the many dams that owns the region, the reservoir Puclaro, which is 432 meters in an area known as Angostura Puclaro. Has a capacity of 200 million cubic meters of water and 760 hectare.

Information for Astronomers The Submillimeter Array SMA News The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is an 8-element radio interferometer located atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Operating at frequencies from 180 GHz to 700 GHz, the 6m dishes may be arranged into configurations with baselines as long as 509m, producing a synthesized beam of sub-arcsecond width. Each element can observe with two receivers simultaneously, with 2 GHz bandwidth each. The digital correlator backend allows flexible allocation of thousands of spectral channels to each receiver. The Submillimeter Array is a joint project between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics and is funded by the Smithsonian Institution and the Academia Sinica. Non-moving objects, such as stars and galaxies, appear white in the picture. "The exact diameter of 2001 KX76 depends on assumptions that astronomers make about how its brightness relates to its size. Traditional assumptions make it the biggest by a significant amount, while others make it larger by at least 5 percent." Earlier this year, a Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) called 20000 Varuna was announced with an estimated diameter of 900 kilometers, based on a calculated reflectivity of 7 percent. Applying this albedo to 2001 KX76 gives it a diameter of roughly 960 kilometers (595 miles).
