Astronomy projects in ruins as observatory obliterated
By Richard Macey and Michael Bradley January 20 2003 The gutted Mount Stromlo observatory. Photo: AFP/Torsten Blackwood A third of Australia's world-leading astronomy program was wiped out at the weekend when the Canberra bushfires gutted the Mount Stromlo Observatory. The flames destroyed five telescopes, the workshop, eight staff homes and the main dome, causing more than $20million in damage. The historic 1.3 metre-diameter Great Melbourne Telescope, built in 1868 and upgraded a decade ago to become one of the most sophisticated in Australia, was lost, as was a larger, 1.9-metre instrument. "Our telescopes have been obliterated ... and most importantly, our workshops have been gutted," said a shattered Professor John Norris, Mount Stromlo's associate director, who spent several hours yesterday inspecting the damage. "It is just tragic."

www . Science-Projects . com Astronomy Projects for Beginners INTRODUCTION. Of all the scientific studies, astronomy can be the one that is so immediately filled with wonder. It is so enticing! While so many students would like to do projects in astronomy, alas, the vast majority of projects are not easy to do because they require great expense and skill - great observatories, radio-telescopes, space labs. Before continuing with mentioning a few projects that are possible, it might be wise to suggest to you, the student, to ask your teacher which is preferred for a terrific grade:
  • that you go to the library and then make models of, or write a great report about other people's discoveries, or
  • that you write a report or model your own discoveries. This is a double-barrelled suggestion (1) because any great teacher would much prefer you to do some work rather than merely rephrase someone else's finding. With that thought planted in the teacher's mind, you will have a big edge over your classmates because most or all of your classmates will report on other people's work and the teacher think very highly of your work - PROVIDING that you explain it well so that the teacher understands it. (Remember that if you do a project which few or no one else has done before, you cannot expect the teacher to have done it or know about it. YOU must be the explainer; YOU must be the teacher's teacher. (What are the Kuiper Belts of the outer reaches of the solar system? Yes, 'that' Kuiper!)

The study of the stars and moon can entice kids into a greater interest in math and science, while tying into the fun of thinking about aliens and rockets and being weightless. Your backyard can be a source of fun astronomy projects that are both historical and immediate. Try these five projects for a simple start into the world of astronomy. Build a Backyard Solar Viewing Pond While in Peru, we visited the famous Machu Pichu ruins where ancient astronomers dug out small areas in the rock and allowed rain water to collect. By standing nearby, visitors could see a reflection of the sun in the water surface. Kids can make their own solar viewing pond by digging out an area in the dirt and planting a metal or ceramic bowl and filling it with water. Parents should have kids decorate the bowl edges so it looks natural. An added advantage is it will help provide other wildlife a drink of water or bath. Photograph the Moon's Phases If you have a digital camera and a tripod, this project will teach children how the

    Middle School Astronomy Projects
By Lee Morgan eHow Contributor updated: December 18, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Astronomy captures the imagination of students from a fairly early age. Middle school students are at a good age to begin learning some facts about space, stars and planets. Use a variety of classroom projects to help the students get a firm grasp on astronomy.
    Solar System Size
  • It's simple to rattle off numbers to explain how many miles it is from planet to planet or from Earth to the sun. It takes a visual example, however, to help students realize just how enormous our solar system really is.
Use a scale model and a roll of toilet paper to complete a classroom project that will likely surprise the students, according to the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
