Astronomy Research via the Internet Kavan Ratnatunga Sri Lanka Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA USA. Abstract
Small developing countries may not have an ideal site for an Astronomical observatory or afford the financial commitment to setup and support such an facility. Much of astronomical research today is however done with remote observations, such as from Telescopes in Space or service observing at large facilities on the ground. For example, Hubble Space Telescope images taken in parallel mode are made freely available on the Internet a day after the observations are taken, and all other primary data after one year. This opens up the ability to do cutting edge astronomical research unaffected by tropical weather. This needs only networked computers which are now relatively of low cost and freely available software packages.

Professor R. Earle Luck 's research interests include studies of stellar and galactic chemical evolution, stellar abundance analysis, isotopic abundance ratios, spectrum synthesis techniques, spectroscopic data reduction techniques, robotic/remote telescope control and instrumentation, and educational support of middle and secondary school science teachers. (See the Nearby Stars Stellar Database
Professor Chris Mihos uses observational data from ground- and space-based telescopes combined with state-of-the-art computer modeling to study the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Using Case's wide-field Burrell Schmidt telescope, Mihos is surveying the nearby Virgo cluster of galaxies to find the ghostly intracluster light that traces the history of galaxy collisions inside the cluster. Computer simulations of galaxy clusters are being used to probe how these intracluster stars are torn out of cluster galaxies, while other simulations have focused on mergers of galaxies, the triggering of starburst galaxies and quasars, and the transformation of spiral galaxies into ellipticals. This merger-driven evolution of galaxies is also the focus of studies using the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes which provide a detailed view of colliding galaxies in the local universe.

The UCSB Physics Department houses the campus's astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology research, ranging from experimental work on the cosmic microwave background to observational work at the University of California/California Institute of Technology operated Keck Observatories in Hawaii and theoretical work in all parts of astrophysics. Frequent seminars and graduate courses in astrophysics allow students to learn the fundamentals of the field and become acquainted with the rich research opportunities. The campus astrophysics effort is enhanced by frequent programs at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics that attract world-class theoretical astrophysicists for extended periods, as well as postdoctoral researchers in astrophysics. We are also closely associated with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network , a private foundation which is building a global network of telescopes for scientific research and research-based education.

    Astronomy Research Paper Topics
By Timothy Sexton eHow Contributor updated: May 22, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • eclipse-1 image by Yggdrasill from Fotolia.com Astronomy presents a universe of possible research topics. Astronomy quite literally puts the entire universe at your disposal when you are assigned a research paper. Picking a topic can be overwhelming when you look into the sky and think of the billions of stars, and the dollars that have been spent on astronomical research. That research provides valuable references for your own inquiry into multiple topics and ideas that were not even known about half a century ago.
  • Meteors
  • The astronauts and the historically significant unmanned missions may get all the glory and fame, but much of what is known about the universe among astronomers was gleaned not from what was found off the globe, but what was found right here on earth. Thousands of meteors fall to earth every year and these specimens provide a wealth of information about the materials that formed the planets and satellites billions of years ago. A research paper could cover the elements that make up the meteors and compare those to elements making up the Earth.

Welcome to the AIUB web site
The AIUB has its research focus on fundamental astronomy, most likely the oldest branch of astronomy. In the academic curriculum the Astronomical and the Physical Institutes of the University of Bern offer the astronomy and astrophysics modules in the bachelor and master programs of the university of Bern. Combining observational skills and theoretical work has traditionat the AIUB. Modern observations are performed at the Zimmerwald observatory. The observation methods include astrometric positions of natural and artificial celestial bodies, distances and distance differences of artificial Earth satellites.
The Zimmerwald observatory Satellite Laser Ranging with cm-accuracy, the measurement of distance differences to GNSS (Global Navitation Satellite Systems) satellites, measured in the microwave band of the electromagnetic spectrum, are used to determine the satellites' orbits, the terrestrial reference frame, the Earth's gravity field, for worldwide time synchronization, and so on. The results achieved by the AIUB are a significant contribution to the official products of the IERS (International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service).
