QUOTES ON ATHEISM Atheism ... that bugbear of women and fools ... is the very top and perfection of free-thinking. It is the grand arcanum to which a true genius naturally riseth, by a certain climax or gradation of thought, and without which he can never possess his soul in absolute liberty and repose. GEORGE BERKELEY, Alciphron A little philosophy inclineth man's mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion. FRANCIS BACON, Essays I am not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief is positively harmful. Reviewing the false claims of religion, I do not wish, as some sentimental materialists affect to wish, that they were true. I do not envy believers their faith. I am relieved to think that the whole story is a sinister fairy tale; life would be miserable if what the faithful affirmed was actually the case. CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS

About Atheism [ Index ] Various introductions to atheism, including its definition; its relationship to agnosticism, theism, and noncognitivism; and its value. Arguments for Atheism [ Index ] In this section, "arguments for atheism" means "arguments for the nonexistence of God." In the jargon of the philosophy of religion, such arguments are known as "atheological arguments." The argument from evil (sometimes referred to as 'the problem of evil') is by far the most famous of such arguments, but it is by no means the only such argument. Indeed, in the 1990s atheist philosophers developed a flurry of atheological arguments; arguably the most famous of such arguments is the argument from divine hiddenness (and the related argument from nonbelief). Atheism, Theism, and the Burden of Proof [ Index ] Debates [ Index ] Links to transcripts or reviews of debates specifically about atheism (as opposed to debates about Christianity, Islam, creation/evolution, etc.). Strengthening Your Atheism - The Psychological Explanation for Religion Home Introduction The Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory Father and Mother Figures in Religions ... Links Welcome to our web site!
Who is this website meant for?
First and mainly - for all of you whose minds tell you religion doesn't make sense and who would like to consider themselves atheists, but whose hearts have these moments of doubt. Those of you who are skeptic of religious beliefs, but in times of stress find themselves calling for God's help. Those of you who can outwardly present clear-cut and well-presented atheist ideas, but have this yanking "but yet...." in the back of their heads.
This site is intended to show you that these doubts and inner feelings are not a sign of divine presence lingering about, but rather the opposite: they are proof of the human origin of religion. Once you've learned and taken in the essence of the "Embryonic and Parental Shell Theory" that is presented on the next pages, you will better understand why it is so difficult to shake off religious inclinations against all better knowledge. Understanding the psychological origin of religion will help you to strengthen your atheism and aid others who attempt to shed the irrational religious misconceptions.

    Atheism
The term “atheist” describes a person who does not believe that God or a divine being exists.  Worldwide there may be as many as a billion atheists, although social stigma, political pressure, and intolerance make accurate polling difficult. For the most part, atheists have presumed that the most reasonable conclusions are the ones that have the best evidential support.  And they have argued that the evidence in favor of God’s existence is too weak, or the arguments in favor of concluding there is no God are more compelling.  Traditionally the arguments for God’s existence have fallen into several families: ontological teleological , and cosmological arguments, miracles , and prudential justifications.  For detailed discussion of those arguments and the major challenges to them that have motivated the atheist conclusion, the reader is encouraged to consult the other relevant sections of the encyclopedia. Arguments for the non-existence of God are deductive or inductive The presentation below provides an overview of concepts, arguments, and issues that are central to work on atheism.

"it isn't really new," he says, "except it coincides with huge advances made in the natural sciences. and there's been an unusually violent challenge to pluralist values by the supporters of at least one monotheism apologised for quite often by the sympathisers of others. then they say we're fundamentalists. a stupid idea like that is hard to kill because any moron can learn it in 10 seconds and repeat it as if for the first time. but since there isn't a single position that any of us holds on anything that depends upon an assertion that can't be challenged, i guess that will die out or they'll get bored of it."
as for the notion that his brand of atheism is reductive or joyless, it's religion, he contests, that is "cosmically hopeless, as is all the related masochism that goes with it – you've got to spend your entire life making up for the vermin you are. what is that if not degrading? we don't do that to people. we say you may as well know you're a primate, but take heart, primates are capable of great things."'

    Foreword
This article attempts to provide a general introduction to atheism. Whilst I have tried to be as neutral as possible regarding contentious issues, you should always remember that this document represents only one viewpoint. I would encourage you to read widely and draw your own conclusions; some relevant books are listed in a companion document: Atheist Resources To provide a sense of cohesion and progression, I have presented this article as an imaginary conversation between an atheist and a theist. All the questions asked by the imaginary theist are questions which have been cropped up repeatedly on the Usenet newsgroup alt.atheism since that newsgroup was first created. Some other frequently asked questions are answered in a companion document: Atheist Arguments Please note that this article is arguably slanted towards answering questions posed from a Christian viewpoint. This is because the FAQ files reflect questions which have actually been asked, and it is predominantly Christians who proselytize on alt.atheism. So when I talk of religion, I am talking primarily about religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam, which involve some sort of superhuman divine being. Much of the discussion will apply to other religions, but some of it may not. (See

a privative, and theos God , i.e. without God Atheism is that system of thought which is formally opposed to theism. Since its first coming into use the term atheism has been very vaguely employed, generally as an epithet of accusation against any system that called in question the popular gods of the day. Thus while Socrates was accused of atheism (Plato, Apol., 26, c.) and Diagoras called an atheist by Cicero (Nat. Deor. , I, 23), Democritus and Epicurus were styled in the same sense impious (without respect for the gods) on account of their trend of their new atomistic philosophy . In this sense too, the early Christians were known to the pagans as atheists, because they denied the heathen gods; while, from time to time, various religious and philisophical systems have, for similar reasons, been deemed atheistic. Though atheism, historically considered, has meant no more in the past than a critical or sceptical denial of the theology of those who have employed the term as one of reproach, and has consquently no one strict philisophical meaning; and though there is no one consistent system in the exposition of which it has a definite place; yet, if we consider it in its broad meaning as merely the opposite of theism, we will be able to frame such divisions as will make possible a grouping of definite systems under this head. And in so doing so we shall at once be

With the spread of freethought skeptical inquiry , and subsequent increase in criticism of religion , application of the term narrowed in scope. The first individuals to self-identify as "atheist" appeared in the 18th century.
