Some speakers do not distinguish between these senses; others distinguish them by using the terms strong atheism and weak atheism (respectively), or by using atheism to mean “strong atheism” and agnosticism or nontheism to mean “weak atheism”. 64. Are God And Ethics Inseparable Or Incompatible?
An in depth treatment of the moral argument for God and the meta-ethical argument for atheism.

Are God and Ethics Inseparable or Incompatible? By Robin Le Poidevin, Arguing for Atheism: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion. London: Routledge, 1996, ch. 6. "They that deny a God destroy a man's nobility, for certainly Man is of kin to the beasts by his body; and if he be not of kin to God by his spirit, he is a base and ignoble creature." - Francis Bacon, Of Atheism
PLATO'S DILEMMA
Consider the following doctrines:
a) God is good. b) God wills us to do what is good. c) God is the basis of ethics.
However, in this chapter, I want to pursue a quite different, and more metaphysical, interpretation of c), namely the idea that the existence of God explains the existence of moral values. The fact that certain acts are good or bad depends in some way on God and his properties. Some theists have appealed to this explanatory role in arguing for the existence of God. The argument, knows as the 'moral argument' for God, goes roughly like this:
The moral argument
1 There are moral values 2 The existence of those values depends on the existence and nature of God.

atheism (from Gr. a, privative, and O€6, God), literally a system of belief which denies the existence of God. The term as generally used, however, is highly ambiguous.

Atheism
From LoveToKnow 1911
ATHEISM b ) according as it is (i.) deliberately adopted by a thinker as a description of his own theological standpoint, or (ii.) applied by one set of thinkers to their opponents. As to (a), it is obvious that atheism from the standpoint of the Christian is a very different conception as compared with atheism as understood by a Deist, a Positivist, a follower of Euhemerus or Herbert Spencer , or a Buddhist.
But the ambiguities arising from the points of view described in ( b ) are much more difficult both intellectually and in their practical social issues. Thus history shows how readily the term has been used in the most haphazard manner to describe even the most trivial divergence of opinion concerning points of dogma . In other words, " atheism " has been used generally by the orthodox adherents of one religion, or even of a single sect , for all beliefs which are different or even differently expressed.
It is in fact in these cases, like " heterodoxy," a term of purely negative significance, and its intellectual value is of the slightest. The distinction between the terms " religion " and " magic " is, in a similar way, often due merely to rivalry between the adherents of two or more mutually exclusive religions brought together in the same community. When the psalmist declares that " the

Akira Suemori/Associated Press Updated April 27, 2009 Polls show that the ranks of atheists in the United States may be increasing. The American Religious Identification Survey , a major study released in March 2009, found that those who claimed "no religion" were the only demographic group that grew in all 50 states in the last 18 years. Nationally, the "nones" in the population nearly doubled, to 15 percent in 2008 from 8 percent in 1990. In South Carolina, they more than tripled, to 10 percent from 3 percent. (Not all the "nones" are necessarily committed atheists or agnostics.) The atheists and their organizations are connecting on the Internet, holding meet-ups in bars, advertising on billboards and buses, volunteering at food pantries and picking up roadside trash, earning atheist groups recognition on adopt-a-highway signs.

http://mb-soft.com/believe/txo/atheism.htm
Atheism
General Information Atheism, from the Greek a ("without") and theos ("deity"), commonly and loosely refers to the theoretical or practical denial of the existence of a deity. The concrete meaning of atheism has varied considerably in history: even the earliest Christians were labeled "atheists" because they denied the existence of the Roman deities. In Western culture, where monotheism has been the dominant mode of religious belief, atheism has generally referred to the denial of the existence of a transcendent, perfect, personal creator of the universe. To be an atheist need not mean that one is nonreligious, for there are "high" religions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, that do not postulate the existence of a supernatural being. Atheism should be distinguished from Agnosticism, which means that one does not know whether or not a deity exists. Monotheism has been so basic to and compounded with Western moral and philosophical beliefs as well as political institutions that until recently atheism has been widely believed to be both immoral and dangerous to society. Plato not only viewed atheism as irrational but argued that certain atheists deserved the death penalty. When Christianity finally became the dominant religion in the West, atheism and heresy were thought to be worthy of exile or death because, as Thomas Aquinas argued, it was a much more serious matter to corrupt the soul than to damage the body. Atheism was also dangerous to the political authority of Western monarchies that claimed to rest upon divine right.

What Is an Atheist?
An atheist, in disbelieving in gods, spirits, and devils, is doing nothing more controversial than the Christian does in regard to Allah, the Muslim does in regard to Ganesh, or the Hindu does in regard to Zeus. Even so, atheism is a lot more more than the absence of what is elsewhere a terrifically common mistake. [Read more]

Indeed, the word stems from the Greek "a" meaning "no", and "theism" meaning "belief in a god". This includes the Abrahamic God (s), Zeus, the Flying Spaghetti Monster , and every other deity from A to Z (and 0-9, !, ", £, $ or any other character, obviously). With this definition of atheism, the terms "God" and "a god" are used interchangeably as there is no difference between a monotheistic deity and a pantheon of polytheistic deities when it comes to complete disbelief in them. This also has the deliberate intent of ignoring the privileged position Yahweh has held in English grammar. Although anecdotes and studies indicate that people who have had no access to religious culture or influences may ponder questions like "where did we come from?", the lack of belief in specifically religious deities, or a specific religious doctrine to go with them, is the default state for any human being. As they age and gain more knowledge about the world, people may stay at this "default" non-believing state, move into a believing state, or move into and then out of a religious belief in the absence of sufficient evidence of any supernatural entities. The position of an atheist, therefore, is that they are not convinced that there is sufficient evidence for the existence of gods, so they can be assumed not to exist and safely ignored, without fear of hellfire or lightning bolts. This idea was stated most famously by

Tensions between atheists and theists in the United States of America
It should be noted that despite American society being secular and atheistic in theory, 76.5% of Americans call themselves Christian, thus American public society underrepresents and in many cases completely disenfranchises the implementation of the majority opinion: that there is a God. In this sense, the 14.1% of American society which call themselves secularists decide policy, scientific opinion, educational course material, and many other forms of knowledge despite the fact the majority of American society believes in a higher power of some sort. This is largely due to the widespread secularist dominance of politics.

Atheism , as an explicit position, can be either the affirmation of the nonexistence of gods , or the rejection of theism. It is also defined more broadly as synonymous with any form of nontheism, including the simple absence of belief in deities. Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism and naturalism, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere; and some religions , such as Jainism and Theravada Buddhism , do not require belief in a personal god. The term atheism originated as a pejorative epithet applied to any person or belief in conflict with established religion. With the spread of freethought, scientific skepticism, and criticism of religion, the term began to gather a more specific meaning and has been increasingly used as a self-description by atheists.

Exploring territory beyond the rejection of gods.
http://www.irregulartimes.com/further.html
Welcome to Further Than Atheism. Written for non-believersof all stripes, Further Than Atheism is an ongoing attempt to explore the territory that lies beyond the rejection of gods that all atheists share. It is based upon the insight that atheism should be a beginning, not an end in itself. By focusing merely upon what they do not believe, atheists restrict themselves to mere reaction to the ideas of the religious. Atheism consists only of negation, but it allows for many possible affirmations as well. The search for such possibilities is what Further Than Atheism is all about. Older Articles
