    Background
The first professional football match in Wigan was between Wigan County and Burton Swifts in 1897. County collapsed three years later but in 1905 Wigan Town was formed and shared Springfield Park with Wigan RLFC. Wigan Town also collapsed within three years and the town was dominated by rugby league until the formation of Wigan Borough in 1920. Borough were elected to Division Three (North) in 1921 but after eleven years of struggle, they resigned at the beginning of the 1931-32 season. The "Latics" were formed a year after the demise of Borough and joined the Cheshire League, winning the championship three times before the outbreak of World War Two. When league football resumed after the war, Wigan's local kit suppliers could only offer blue and white shirts due to clothing shortages so the Latics dropped their original red and white colours. After finishing bottom of the Cheshire League in 1947, Wigan joined the Lancashire Combination. They were champions in 1948 and over the next six seasons, the Latics won the title three more times.

    Background
After missing out on election by a single vote in 1906, they won the Combination title and reached the second round proper of the FA Cup only to be disappointed at the Football League AGM in June 1907. After the vote was taken, however, Burslem Port Vale resigned from the League and Oldham, as the strongest of the unsuccessful candidates, were invited to take their place. On their election, Oldham switched from their previous red and white shirts to blue and white stripes. Immediately after the Second World War, Oldham turned out in red and white hooped jerseys borrowed from their neighbours, Oldham RLFC, presumably because the traditional shirts were not available. In 1953 they returned to Division Two only to be relegated immediately and in 1959 and 1960 the club suffered the humiliation of having to apply for re-election to the Fourth Division twice in succession.

    Background
In 1905 a group of young boys - average age 15 - started playing under the name of Charlton Athletic FC on fields in the shadow of the giant Siemens Telegraph Works, now long demolished, and near where the Thames Barrier now stands. The team proved so successful that they joined the Lewisham League in 1906 but they remained essentially a strong local side until after the Great War. By 1922 a new West Stand had been built at The Valley and the ground was being mooted as a venue for future FA Cup Finals, having a capacity of around 75,000. Falling attendances prompted the directors to move to a new ground at The Mount in Catford. For the 1923-24 season, Charlton wore the dark and light blue sripes of Catford South End FC with whom it was proposed to merge but it soon became obvious that there was no future in this development and the "Addicks" returned to the Valley at the end of the season. In 1926 Charlton had to apply for re-election but there were no applications from non-league clubs that year so they were returned unnopposed. In 1929 Athletic were promoted to Division Two but were relegated four years later.
