What is A.D.D.?
ADD Stands for Attention Deficit Disorder This is one of the only times that I will refer to ADD as Attention Deficit Disorder. Those of us that are ADD know that attention is only one part of being ADD. Plus we really don't have an attention deficit. In fact we actually have an over abundance of attention. It's just hard for us to pay attention to only one thing at a time. If that one thing is boring or meaningless to us, it is next to impossible to pay attention to it...
Positive ADD Traits Creativity : People with ADD are very creative. Yes, You are creative too. Living in a non-ADD world may have stifled your creativity though. When we as ADD people have no outlet for creativity that is when problems start to escalate...
Sensitivity : People with ADD are highly sensitive. Many ADD people appear to be the exact opposite though. This may be because society does not want us to show our feelings. This is especially hard for males. We wonder why little boys with ADD/ADHD are fighting a lot. If they cry like they feel like doing they may be told that crying is for babies and to "suck it up"...
Intuition : People with ADD are very intuitive. We rely a lot on our gut feelings. For some reason our society does not to seem to value intuition very highly. Society wants us to prove everything. Sometimes it's very hard for people with ADD to find proof for what they know in their gut is 100% correct...

ADHD-PI is different from the other subtypes of ADHD in that it is characterized primarily by inattention, easy distractibility, disorganization, procrastination, forgetfulness, and lethargy (fatigue), but with less or none of the symptoms of hyperactivity or impulsiveness typical of the other ADHD subtypes. These children may be at greater risk of academic failures and early withdrawal from school. Teachers and parents may make incorrect assumptions about the behaviours and attitudes of a child with undiagnosed ADHD-PI, and may provide them with frequent and erroneous

> What is ADD
An attention-deficit disorder ( ADD ) is a developmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention, overactivity, and impulsivity. Symptoms are neurologically-based, arise in early childhood, and are chronic in nature in most cases. Symptoms are not due to gross neurological impairment, sensory impairment, language or motor impairment, mental retardation, or emotional disturbance.
Three main traits characterize ADD : (1) poor sustained attention or vigilance; (2) impulsivity or difficulty delaying gratification; and (3) hyperactivity or poorly regulated activity. Increased variability of task performance and problems complying with rules are often key features.

The National Association of School Psychologists states, "ADD/ADHD has come to act like a set of blinders... The many other potential sources of inattention are often times bypassed and not even considered." The goal of this site is to consider the many possible sources of ADD-like behaviors, including natural temperament traits, diet, and other factors, because there is rarely a case of "pure" ADD.

What is ADD? Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD/ADHD, is a psychological term currently applied to anyone who meets the DSM IV diagnostic criteria for impulsivity, hyperactivity and/or inattention. The diagnostic criteria are subjective and include behavior which might be caused by a wide variety of factors, ranging from brain defects to allergies to giftedness. ADD, as currently defined, is a highly subjective description, not a specific disease. Profiles: The Diverse Face of ADD
(or the types of people who get that label, right or wrong) Sam Tom is a five year old who ate paint chips containing lead when he was a toddler. The lead exposure caused permanent brain damage, and he now has an IQ of 86 and is extremely hyperactive and impulsive. He bounces from toy to toy, unable to really focus on anything for more than a few seconds. He is also very clumsy and accident prone. This is the classic case of "pure" ADD that people like Russell Barkley think about when they talk about how bad ADD is and how necessary medications are. Their mistake is in extrapolating what they know about Tom to other people such as Sam.

OK...I Have ADHD, But Does Mom Have It Too? Carol E. Watkins, M.D.
What is it like to have a parent with AD/HD? In many cases, AD/HD is inherited, so if you have it, some other family members might have it too. Sometimes, when a son or daughter is diagnosed, the parents start remembering the problems they had when they were growing up. They may realize that they are a lot like you! What is it like to have a parent with AD/HD? I asked one of my adolescent consultants. He said that there are good and bad things about having a parent with AD/HD. Sometimes, his mother blows up and yells. Then, it can take a while before she cools down and apologizes. Other times it is fun and exciting because she has a lot of energy and thinks up exciting things to do on weekends. Its nice to have one ADD parent and one normal parent. His dad tells her when she gets too mad and vetoes some of her more outrageous ideas. He can go to his mother for some things and his father for others.

These symptoms should have been present before the age of seven, must be present in two or more different settings (school and home, for example), and should be causing some impairment in the child's functioning, including causing difficulty in school, or in social situations. If your child has the symptoms of attention deficit disorder, but it isn't causing any impairment in his functioning, then he doesn't have ADHD.
