How Nutrition can Affect ADHD Symptoms
Sunday, July 25, 2010 One of the major considerations for a child with ADHD symptoms should be looking at nutrition. So how can behaviour be improved by improving the nutrients that we take? Well, a year of researching a programme in a school for children with learning difficulties proved beyond any doubt that it does indeed make a considerable difference. No Comments

    Attention Deficit Disorder
    An Introduction to ADD/ADHD
By Regina Bussing, M.D. and John M. Grohol, Psy.D. Table of Contents: Have you ever had trouble concentrating, found it hard to sit still, interrupted others during a conversation or acted impulsively without thinking things through? Can you recall times when you daydreamed or had difficulty focusing on the task at hand? Most of us can picture acting this way from time to time. But for some people, these and other exasperating behaviors are uncontrollable, persistently plaguing their day-to-day existence and interfering with their ability to form lasting friendships or succeed in school, at home and with a career. Unlike a broken bone or cancer, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, also know as just plain attention deficit disorder or ADD) does not show physical signs that can be detected by a blood or other lab test. The typical ADHD symptoms often overlap with those of other physical and psychological disorders. The causes remain unknown, but ADHD can be diagnosed and effectively treated. Many resources are available to support families in managing ADHD behaviors when they occur.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Addiction Carol Watkins, M.D. Individuals with AD/HD have several characteristics that make them more vulnerable to substance abuse: These may include self-medication, impulsivity, social skills problems and a tendency to associate with others who are not doing well in school. Adult attention deficit disorder seems to be related to earlier onset of substance abuse, a longer period of active abuse, and a lower rate of recovery. (Wilens, Biederman and Mick, Am J Addict 1998) A study by Biederman et al Am J Psychiatry 1995 suggested found that 52% of adults with AD/HD(versus 27% of controls) had met criteria for substance abuse at some point in their lives. Other studies have found slightly lower rates but have still found that the rates are significantly higher than those of individuals without AD/HD.

    Attention Deficit Disorder
    by Lorraine Day, M.D.
A child is given the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), also called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) when he is considered overactive, cannot pay attention and cannot sit still, ALL VERY subjective symptoms. ADD is diagnosed four times more frequently in boys because boys mature more slowly than girls and because boys are put in classes at school with girls of the same age, so the boys, being less mature, appear to be hyperactive. Irritability anger and mental confusion may also be present so these children are then labeled as having a "Learning Disability." However, these symptoms are virtually identical to the symptoms of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar which is caused by the up and down swings of insulin resulting from eating too much refined sugar.
Attention Deficit Disorder and Ritalin have become almost synonymous. Up to 90% of children who are first diagnosed with ADD receive a prescription for Ritalin. At least a dozen other drugs are prescribed for these symptoms as well. There has been a 500% increase in the use of Ritalin alone since 1991. Short- term use of these medications is associated with a 70 to 80% improvement in symptoms. So naturally, it appears that the drugs have solved the problem. However, these studies don't show the entire picture. Very few long-term studies have been done evaluating the success of amphetamine-type medication such as Ritalin, for ADD symptoms, and the few studies that do exist do not present a very encouraging picture. For years, it was thought that children outgrew symptoms of ADD so they were treated with drugs, until they "outgrew" the condition.

GET THE FACTS ON MENTAL ILLNESS Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder is a mental disorder, found in children, that is defined as developmentally, inappropriate, inattention and impulsivity with or without hyperactivity. Simply put, children with Attention Deficit Disorder exhibit restlessness or jitteriness and they have a short attention span and poor impulse control. They are often difficult to manage as toddlers and preschoolers. In later childhood, they may exhibit continuous movement of the lower extremities, purposeless movement and fidgeting of the hands, impulsive talking and a seeming lack of awareness of their environment. Attention Deficit Disorder occurs typically before age three and invariably before age seven and affects 5 to 10 percent of school-aged children. It is seen four times more frequently in boys than girls. Causes The cause of Attention Deficit Disorder is unknown. Several theories have been proposed that point to biochemical, sensory and motor, and physiologic causes. Diagnosis is often difficult because no particular organic signs or set of neurologic indicators are specific. The primary signs are behavioral and vary with situation and time. Social and medical histories and school reports are essential for diagnosis. Symptoms There are three primary signs of Attention Deficit Disorder: Inattention - failure to finish tasks started, easy distractibility, seeming lack of attention, and difficulty concentrating on tasks requiring sustained attention

What is Attention Deficit Disorder Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a neurobiological condition that arises in early childhood and may be characterized by core symptoms of inattention, impulsivity and restlessness. It was once considered to be a disorder that only affected children and was outgrown in adulthood. It is now known that ADD is not always outgrown as one matures and, in fact, out of the approximate 15 million people currently diagnosed with ADD in the United States today, about two thirds of them are adults. Many of these individuals were not diagnosed until later in life, and as a consequence have suffered a great deal of embarrassment, humiliation, and emotional pain. Many have lost hope and given up on achieving their goals and dreams. ADD is often a hidden disability in adults. For this reason and because many clinicians are unfamiliar with ADD and its persistence across the life span, countless individuals are living with this disorder who have never been diagnosed or treated. There are a lot of successful adults with ADD, but for many others untreated, ADD takes a toll on their lives affecting the quality of their business and personal relationships, often making it difficult to sustain a successful career and family life. In addition, ADD can predispose individuals to various other problems including anxiety and depression, as well as alcohol and drug use.

    What Is Attention Deficit Disorder?
Many teachers and parents have received and will continue to receive the diagnosis of ADD for children who have problems. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has identified and defined this disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association (1980), ADD is indicated when children display inappropriate inattention, impulsivity, and sometimes hyperactivity for their mental and chronological age. ADD may be diagnosed as with or without hyperactivity. Approximately 20% of the population will be diagnosed as having ADD. Teachers and parents are the ones who usually seek help for children who exhibit the problems associated with ADD. Children from ages 8 to 10 years are most likely to be referred and diagnosed as ADD. The younger the child is when diagnosed as ADD, the more severe form of ADD they are likely to show. Conversely, if preadolescent and/or adolescent children are diagnosed, they will usually show a less severe form of ADD. ADD is most obvious in situations that call for self-application or in group situations, and may be absent in a one-to-one situation or in a situation that is novel to the child. These facts should be kept in mind as the criteria used for diagnosis of ADD are considered.

Every year the National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY) receives thousands of requests for information about the education and special needs of children and youth with Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADHD, ADD/ADHD). Over the past several years, ADD or A.D.D. (ADHD, ADD/ADHD) has received a tremendous amount of attention from parents, professionals, and policymakers across the country - so much so, in fact, that nearly everyone has now heard about ADD or A.D.D..
While helpful to those challenged by this disability, such widespread recognition creates the possibility of improper diagnostic practice and inappropriate treatment. Now, more than ever, parents who suspect their child might have ADHD (A.D.D., ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.) and parents of children diagnosed with the disorder need to evaluate information, products, and practitioners carefully.
This NICHCY Briefing Paper is intended to serve as a guide to help parents and educators know what ADHD (A.D.D., ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.) is, what to look for, and what to do. While acknowledging that adults, too, can have ADHD (ADD/ADHD, ADD-ADHD, A.D.D.), this paper focuses on the disorder as it relates to children and youth.

    Introduction
Attention deficit disorders are disorders characterized by serious and persistent difficulties in attention span, impulse control, and hyperactivity. Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a chronic disorder that can begin in infancy and extend through adulthood. It can have a significantly negative effect on an individual's life at home, in school, or in the community. There are two types of attention deficit disorders: undifferentiated Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In undifferentiated ADD, the primary and most significant characteristic is inattentiveness but hyperactivity is not present. These students still manifest problems with organization and distractibility, even though they may seem quite and passive. These students also tend to be overlooked more easily in the classroom, and may be at a higher risk for academic failure than those with ADHD. To be diagnosed as having ADHD a student must display, for six months or more, at least eight of the following characteristics prior to the age of seven:
