Substance Abuse Antisocial Personality Disorder: This is a personality style characterized by a tendency to violate the rights of others, to flout societal rules, and to lack remorse for misdeeds. About 18-25% of AD/HD 25-year-olds studied were found to have this disorder. Only 2% of the general population has Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD.) Children who have AD/HD accompanied with aggressive destructive tendencies seem to be the ones most likely to develop adult ASPD. AD/HD children lacking those tendencies do not seem to have a greatly increased risk of developing ASPD. The individuals with AD/HD and ASPD may end up in the penal system. An impulsive individual might be more likely to get caught than one who plans his criminal activity more carefully.

Psychosocial Treatments T Treating young girls with AD/HD During the diagnostic interview, I have generally taken a history of family psychiatric difficulties. If there is a family history of depression, bipolar disorder or other illnesses, I go over the early warning signs with parents. This is not predicting disaster; it is empowering them with extra knowledge. Sometimes families want to see what the medication does before adding psychosocial interventions. If so, I still spend time educating them about educational, coaching and therapeutic options.

    50 Tips on the
    Management of Adult ADD
    John J. Ratey, M.D.
The treatment of ADD begins with hope. Most people who discover they have ADD, whether they be children or adults, have suffered a great deal of pain. The emotional experience of ADD is filled with embarrassment, humiliation, and self-castigation. By the time the diagnosis is made, many people with ADD have lost confidence in themselves. Many have consulted with numerous specialists, only to find no real help. As a result, many have lost hope. The most important step at the beginning of treatment is to instill hope once again. Individuals with ADD may have forgotten what is good about themselves. They may have lost, long ago, any sense of the possibility of things working out. They are often locked in a kind of tenacious holding pattern, bringing all theory, considerable resiliency, and ingenuity just to keeping their heads above water. It is a tragic loss, the giving up on life too soon. But many people with ADD have seen no other way than repeated failures. To hope, for them, is only to risk getting knocked down once more. And yet, their capacity to hope and to dream is immense. More than most people, individuals with ADD have visionary imaginations. They think big thoughts and dream big dreams. They can take the smallest opportunity and imagine turning it into a major break. They can take a chance encounter and turn it into a grand evening out. They thrive on dreams, and they need organizing methods to make sense of things and keep them on track. But like most dreamers, they go limp when the dream collapses. Usually, by the time the diagnosis of ADD has been made, this collapse has happened often enough to leave them wary of hoping again. The little child would rather stay silent than risk being taunted once again. The adult would rather keep his mouth shut than risk flubbing things up once more. The treatment, then, must begin with hope.

Scientifically, how could this possibly be true? How could molecules extracted from mundane vegetal sources have a profound influence on the brain? According to scientific research, there are a number of mechanisms of action.

    Ms. Tammy A.
The researchers found that it worked just as well as the commonly prescribed stimulant medications, including Ritalin, on thirty children and adults diagnosed with ADD.
Top research institutions worldwide now understand that there is a two-way chemical dialog between the brain and the immune system. Each can influence the other directly. There is an ongoing chemical dialog between the brain and the immune system, a connection that depends on two languages: the neurotransmitters of the brain, and the immunotransmitters of the immune system.

I am an adult female who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I seem to recall some research that indicated that certain foods could aggravate symptoms of ADHD? Has this been substantiated recently? What are these foods? Sugar? Yeast? Food Dyes? I am very curious. Please help.
Hyperactivity or hyperkinesis, is a diagnosable syndrome recognized by health professionals as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The precise cause or causes of ADHD are not known. New research offers hope in pinpointing an internal origin for the disorder. A recent study suggests that true ADHD is related to a problem in brain metabolism. Researchers studied adults who had been hyperactive since childhood and who were parents of hyperactive children. They found reduced activity in those areas of the brain that control attention and movement.
In the early 1970's Dr. Feingold proposed that much of the hyperactivity involved with learning disabilities could be attributed to food additives. This untested idea based on testimonials gained wide public acceptance. He believed that removing synthetic colors and flavors, as well as certain fruits and vegetables containing "salicylates" from the diet could treat behavioral disturbances. He also speculated that foods, such as sugar, caused behavior changes. Over the years, dozens of scientists put Dr. Feingold's theories to the test, but the evidence they gathered failed to support Dr Feingold's theory that additives, sugar or other substances in food, cause or contribute to hyperactivity.
