Australian Culture and society
In Australia, you’ll notice differences to your own country. Australia has a casual, laid-back culture and whilst you will still encounter formal situations, day to day encounters are very casual. You may be used to very specific ways of addressing people of authority, status and of certain ages but don’t worry here are a few tips to get you started
Here are is advice on Australian culture:
  • Introducing yourself and meeting others—In Australia the majority of people use other people’s first names when addressing them this is the case with people your own age, people younger than you and friends. When you are talking to someone that is older than you that you that you don’t well it is polite to greet them with their last name. However, if they introduce themselves by their first name it’s okay to use that.

What is Australian Culture?
The Australian culture is one of the oldest cultures on the planet. Its Aboriginal heritage, the pioneer bush culture and multicultural influences have shaped the happy-go-lucky resourcefulness of the Australian character.
Australia’s Indigenous Heritage
Warning: This section may contain links to sites that may use images of Aboriginal and Islander people now deceased.
The Australian Aboriginal culture goes back at least 50,000 years. It is the oldest living culture in the world. The secret to its long survival is their affinity with the land.
The Land is sacred to Aboriginal people. They live off it and use it, but also preserve it. Traditionally they have been hunters and gatherers, with exceptional abilities in tracking down animals, identifying and locating edible plants, and finding sources of water and fish. Indigenous Australian culture has been passed from one generation to the next, including sacred knowledge of Aboriginal law, arts, rituals and performances, languages and sacred sites. Their spirituality is that of Aboriginal Dreaming , stories of Ancestor spirits coming to the earth, creating animals, plants, rocks and other land forms. These spirits then changed into trees, stars, rocks, watering holes or other objects themselves, which then became the sacred sites of Aboriginal culture.

If you're Australian...
  • You know hardly anything about the Constitution and what it actually contains. Before the whole republic thing, you may not have even known it existed.
  • You're familiar with Neighbours, Home and Away, Playschool, A Country Practice , Norman Gunston, Barry Humphries, Blue Heelers, Ray Martin, Bert Newton, Lisa McCune, Jon Burgess, Number 96, Molly Meldrum, Kerry O'Brien, and of course, Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch.
  • You can't remember past the second line of your national anthem, let alone the second verse . . .
  • Whether you're male or female, you watch a lot of sport. You watch the cricket, and support your footy team... which code is best is a matter of controversy and depends on your upbringing. You can be sure that the contest is between League, AFL, and maybe Union none of these fancy Northern Hemisphere games, like soccer or gridiron. If you're male, you can argue intricate points about their rules. You don't know so much about basketball, netball, hockey, baseball, etc. even if the national team are the world champions.

Warning. This article may contain the names and images of Aboriginal and Islander people now deceased. It also contains links to sites that may use images of Aboriginal and Islander people now deceased. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are complex and diverse. The Indigenous cultures of Australia are the oldest living cultural history in the world - they go back at least 50,000 years and some argue closer to 65,000 years. One of the reasons Aboriginal cultures have survived for so long is their ability to adapt and change over time. It was this affinity with their surroundings that goes a long way to explaining how Aboriginal people survived for so many millennia. Cultural heritage is seen as 'the total ways of living built up by a group of human beings, which is passed from one generation to the next', given to them by reason of their birth. In Australia, Indigenous communities keep their cultural heritage alive by passing their knowledge, arts, rituals and performances from one generation to another, speaking and teaching languages, protecting cultural materials, sacred and significant sites, and objects.

A VERY Brief History of Australia
Tourist Attractions
Their capital, Sydney, is a very tourist-oriented city. Attractions include: the world famous Sydney Opera House and nearby harbor, Darling Harbor, Bondi and Manly beach, the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and the ANZ stadium where the 2000 Summer Olympics were held. Day trips are readily available from Sydney to the Blue Mountains, one of their greatest attractions, which includes sites such as: the 3 Sisters, a rock formation named after an old folks legend. Another popular day trip is to the Featherdale Wildlife Park where you can pet and feed kangaroos and koalas as well as see other wild animals.
Getting Around
A tourist pass is available for purchase that allows unlimited use of the buses, ferries, and trains. The pass is available for durations of up to 7 days. You can take any bus or ferry, but the trains are restricted to a specific area. It's still the best deal if you haven't rented a car and are planning on doing a lot of sight seeing. There are a million different ways to get around Sydney. Buses are readily available to take you anywhere in Sydney. We stayed in downtown Sydney for a few days, and in Glebe Point (a few miles away from downtown Sydney) for another few days. There was nothing particularly interesting about Glebe Point and I began regreting that I booked a hotel there. But the bus system made our stay pretty painless! Bus stops were available close by on Glebe Point Rd and busses 431,432,433 ran frequently to Sydney downtown. Since we were out all day it didn't really matter that Glebe Point wasn't as exciting as downtown Sydney.

Australian Food, the cocktail of different culture is famous for its miscellany rich cuisines. Traditionally Australian cuisines were based on British cooking from its conception. Later Australian-cookery was enriched with multi-cultural contribution made by German, Italian, Greek, Asian and South African immigrant communities. The inhabitants of Australia are fond of both veg and non-veg foods consisting pies, roasted cuts of meat, grilled steak and chops, and other forms of meat generally accompanied by vegetables For centuries the native Australians are using the fruits and plants growing in their local lands to make mouth-watering delicacies like, Calamari seasoned with lemon myrtle, Lemon myrtle linguine tossed with local scallops and prawns, Native spinach fettuccine with Springs Smoked Salmon with creamy bush tomato and macadamia sauce etc.
Some of the essential ingredients of Australian delicacies are :-
Lemon myrtle: Fresh leaf or ground dried leaf of the Lemon Myrtle tree
Mountain Pepper: ground leaf or berries of the mountain pepper tree
Native spinach: Local spinach growing in coastal areas
Bush tomatoes: small tomato-like fruits, also called desert raising

Australian Culture
Like the USA and Canada, Australia is a federation of states with power shared between state and federal governments. Australia is a predominantly English-speaking, developed country, and is a technologically-oriented one; Australia has one of the highest per-capita levels of VCRs, computers, mobile phones, and so on. Australians feel at home in America and in England, and vice-versa. Australians, like the majority of the world's population, drive on the left-hand side of the road; visitors could choose to drive on the right, but we recommend against it. Australia is very much a multi-cultural nation, having enjoyed waves of immigration starting with the Australian Aboriginals 40,000 years ago, followed by the English 200 years ago. Since the Second World War, Australia has received millions of migrants, with the population roughly tripling over a period of fifty years. However, although Australia is similar in size to the continental USA, its population is still only around 18 million and is heavily concentrated in the major coastal cities; central Australia is essentially a wildly beautiful but uninhabited desert. The bigger cities such as Melbourne and Sydney have large Italian and Greek populations (Melbourne has for many years been the world's second-largest Greek-speaking city, after Athens). Melbourne also has distinct Chinese, Vietnamese, Jewish, Muslim, Arabic, Croatian, Latvian, Serbian, Spanish, Portuguese, Indian, and African communities. The influence of each can be found in the Australian culture; one mark of this is the wide variety and high standard of restaurants of different cuisines to be enjoyed in Melbourne. This mix of cultures is why Australia has really good coffee.

Introduction
It has been noted in earlier chapters that post-Second World War Australia was a very conservative society. In the late 1960s and the 1970s, that began to change. Like many Western countries, Australia entered a period of liberalisation - in politics, fashion, gender roles and beliefs. The Vietnam War had helped shape a society that could question its government's actions and try to change the world around it. A large part of this liberalisation in Australia was witnessed by the ending of the 70-year-old 'White Australia' policy.
Population change
Australia is, of course, a country built on migrants, but for many years, Australian governments would let in only white Europeans. Even highly-skilled people from Asia found it very difficult to obtain permission to migrate. That all changed in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Before 1975, there were fewer than 2000 Vietnamese-born people in Australia. That changed dramatically over the next ten years. After the 'boat people' began arriving in Australia in 1976, the Liberal government led by Malcolm Fraser, realised that Australia had obligations to the Indo-Chinese refugees because of the role Australia had played in the war. Fraser's Government implemented a programme of controlled immigration and also started taking refugees from the camps in South East Asia. By 1978 Australia was involved in the Orderly Departure Program from Vietnam. Over 90 000 Indo-Chinese refugees came to Australia in the 10 years after the Vietnam War.

In this vast homeland that I have always known as Australia , many disturbing trends are becoming quite clear to me.
One such trend is the reduction of focus on White Australian cultural education and practice in the schools. White Australian culture is being restrained from practice within Australian classrooms. This to me is wrong and not in the best interests of White children.
