    Withdrawal of Panvax Junior
Stability testing by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of the pandemic influenza vaccine for children, Panvax H1N1 Junior, has shown a decline in potency of the product which is supplied in 0.25 ml pre-filled syringes. The potency of the vaccine is tested to ensure that it continues to produce an effective immunological response. If the potency of the vaccine were to decline further it would no longer be possible to be confident that this would be the case.
The TGA has informed the manufacturer, CSL, that its registered 12 month shelf life can no longer be supported and the shelf life has been reduced to 6 months. As a result existing stocks of Panvax Jr should now be considered expired.
The decline in potency appears to be the result of particular characteristics of the H1N1 virus itself. Similar declines in potency have been identified internationally by other regulators and have led to reductions in shelf life for other brands of H1N1 monovalent vaccine.
The safety of the vaccine is not affected.

Review of Aspirin/Reye's syndrome warning statement
Medicines Evaluation Committee April 2004 As part of the Review of non-prescription analgesics and the subsequent Review of non-prescription analgesics - an update , recommendations were made regarding changes to the cautionary and advisory statements required on the labels of non-prescription analgesics containing aspirin or NSAIDs. After recent changes to the recommended aspirin warning statements regarding Reye's Syndrome in the UK, the Update recommended consideration of the UK warning statement for adoption in Australia. At its meeting on 3 April 2003, the MEC agreed to re-examine the evidence linking aspirin use in children or teenagers with chicken pox, influenza or fever, with Reye's Syndrome, with a view to making further recommendations to the NDPSC about the advisability of adopting the UK warning statement. The purpose of this review is to provide advice on the current evidence linking aspirin use in children or teenagers to Reye's Syndrome and the suitability/necessity of adopting the UK warning statement. @import "/css/all.css"; A documentary exposing the activity of an industrial inquisition targeting building workers across Australia. “Constructing Fear” shows how these workers are the front line in an attack on civil liberties that has implications for every Australian.

Since 2005, the Australian Building Construction Commission ( ABCC ) has targeted hundreds of workers. The ABCC conducts closed tribunals and seeks individual fines of up to $28,600. Those summonsed cannot refuse to attend a hearing; they cannot refuse to answer questions and they cannot tell anyone, including their families, what happened in the hearing. Penalty? Six months in prison! The ABCC’s operations have been described as "…foreign to the workplace relations of civilised societies, as distinct from undemocratic and authoritarian states." Director of the film, Joe Loh: "People in a democracy should feel free to stand up for themselves, to speak out, and if necessary to act to improve their society. These rights have been taken away from building workers in Australia. Many are understandably intimidated, and despite feeling unjustly treated would not appear in the film. Those that do appear are unique individuals. Their stories shocked me, but their strength and courage gives me great hope. The film belongs to them. I hope you enjoy it. "

Not for the feral cats of Australia By Franny Syufy , About.com Guide

  • zSB(3,3) I am indebted to Janalee Faucher of Catscape for the following material, which appeared originally on her web site: The Australian government promotes Australia as a modern country and tourist heaven. Australia has a sterling reputation in the U.S. and it is a very popular tourist destination. We are urged to think of it as "the Wonderland Down Under." The reputation and the nickname are undeserved, when one considers the Australian government's treatment of feral cats. We owe it to our cat-loving friends down under to give them every assistance possible to stop the carnage promulgated by their government. Australia is exterminating its feral cat population, on the pretext that cats are destroying endangered species. In reality, the only endangered thing there is humanity which is in pitifully short supply all over the Pacific Rim. Australia's estimated 12 million feral cat population did not spring up overnight; the problem has been worsening for decades...but no one cared one way or the other about these cats until someone proposed the concept that cats were responsible for the near-extinction of certain species. (And I have seen no study that concludes this to be true, including studies by the Australian government.) Now, cats are being practically demonized there. But don't take my word for it, there are plenty of resources on this page that'll give you the information straight from the horse's mouth .
