Modern Australian History begins in 17th century when Dutch explorers first sighted the country. There followed British colonization and settlement (1788-1850), self government by the six colonies (1851-1900) and finally Federation (1901). Indigenous Australians’ history dates back between 40 000 and 80 000 years when they settled on the continent and nearby islands. Pcture: An Australian 'Chain gang' of the early penal colonies.
