Suffering Violence Amid The Culture of Silence
By MICHAEL WARE As a result of the scandal the 50,000-strong Australian Defence Force was stood down (for the first time in its history) on Feb. 5 for a two-hour lecture on military justice; an internal ADF inquiry was launched; the military police were reorganized to make them more effective; fresh investigations into 3RAR's commanders began; the ADF legal office is being reviewed; and a new Inspector General's post is to be established. The inquiry found a "culture of silence"-imposed with violence-kept details of the bashings from leaking out, and a "culture of ignorance" had allowed the brutality to flourish. The ADF has been widely commended for taking action to address the larger structural problems. Still, the inquiry condemned the military for keeping the affair secret for two years, and criticized junior defense minister Bruce Scott, who had been "less than forthcoming" in parliament. The 3RAR affair has been damaging to the defense force at a time when officer recruitment is in decline -in spite of a costly advertising campaign. A former Federal Court judge, James Burchett, is due to complete the service-wide inquiry into the ADF by the middle of the year. One Air Force serviceman, who claims beatings plague his unit, told the Seven Network's Sunrise in an e-mail last week that "the military justice audit was a sham," set up to appease the media. "There is a lot more to this than the general public realise," he wrote. Military insiders, however, are confident that nothing as severe as the 3RAR incidents remains to be discovered.

CAN YOU HELP? Wanted - The identity of this dapper ex Sailor who was snapped at the Shrine of Remembrance Melbourne on ANZAC Day 2009. We would like to interview this man as to the provenance of his medals. He must have some great stories about the Victoria Cross shown on his right shoulder and the Cross of Valour on his left breast. He is a man who has been around, we notice Korea, Malaysia. Vietnam and a Dutch Medal among the mix. One would think that the many thousands of veterans attending the Shrine on that day would have pulled this very interesting person aside and at least asked for his autograph. Our enquiries have foundered, we need help to identify him. The medals need provenance and we need the name of the sailor. Click the banner below for important Veteran and ESO information The Australasian Military Fraud Often called by the derogatory term "wannabe" these are men and women who may or may not have served in the armed forces, but who fraudulently misrepresent themselves as having served; often in a theatre of war by their words and actions, and by wearing of medals and other accoutrements to military service to which they have no entitlement.

Until the late 1960s buttons were issued in metals that needed polishing. Obviously it was not viable to remove all the buttons from a uniform on each occasion that the buttons lost their shine. (With brass that took about 24 hours). This was the way around the problem. Each Sovereign has his/her own special "mark" called a cypher. In the UK it is common to use the cypher of the reigning monarch on a General Service button. Some are shown below. Victoria Victoria (Imp Crown variation) Edward VII George V George VI Elizabeth II
    • As well a the "cypher" buttons there were some that used the Guelphic Crown as a mark of respect to Queen Victoria's Consort, Prince Albert.

    About Australian Military Dating
By Gail Cohen eHow Contributor I want to do this! What's This? There's no denying the appeal of a man or woman in uniformregardless of the nation the uniform represents. To add to the cachet, most are young, fit and attractive and many serve in exotic destinations. Mix in the unmistakable coursing of hormones through the bodies of young men and women of military age and you can see why dating someone in the military has its own set of problems and pitfalls. Like their counterparts around the globe, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has experienced its share of growing pains in the area of socialization, but research shows a military culture that has suffered fewer problems than those found in other communities of armed forces, and the Aussies hope to keep it that way.
