The name of Austria reflects the "Oesterreich" meaning of "East Realm" with the infusion of latin reflecting south (which i is not). In 788 Charlemagne set up the East Mark of his easternmost conquests known now as Austria.
The capital city of Austria was founded in 500 BC and was a Celtic settlement. Vienna became a Roman city and was a frontier guarding agains the Germanic tribes of the north.
Vienna, Austria was home to the Babenberg Dynasty, the Habsburg Dynasty, became capital of the Holy Roman Empire and a cultural mecca for Europe. The Ottoman armies were stopped two times just outside of Vienna. Vienna then became capital of The Austrian Empire, then the capital of the First Austrian Republic. At the end of WWII Berlin became the capital of Germany. In 1945 the Vienna Offensive was launched liberating Austria from the Germans. The Soviets assistend however Vienna became independent of both.
Vienna has remained an international city of great prominence in world today.

Like many geeks, I love history . I think knowing of the past of a place and its people allows you to experience it with a lot more depth . It helps to understand the culture and feelings of people about certain ideas. And history is also the key to spotting unique aspects about a particular place, be it in the architecture ethnic and religious affiliation or local etiquette

Schwarzenegger criticized for Austrian history gaffes
Friday, September 3, 2004 Posted: 10:58 AM EDT (1458 GMT)
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks at convention.
VIENNA, Austria (AP) Austrian historians are ridiculing California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for telling the Republican National Convention that he saw Soviet tanks in his homeland as a child and left a "Socialist" country when he moved away in 1968.
Recalling that the Soviets once occupied part of Austria in the aftermath of World War II, Schwarzenegger told the convention on Tuesday: "I saw tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes."
No way, historians say, challenging Schwarzenegger's knowledge of postwar history if not his enduring popularity among Austrians who admire him for rising from a penniless immigrant to the highest official in America's most populous state.

    AHY Mission Statement
Founded in 1965 by R. John Rath, the Austrian History Yearbook remains the only English-language journal devoted to the history of the territories in Central Europe that were formerly under Habsburg rule and now comprise the modern states of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and parts of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the search for stability in the former East bloc has brought an upsurge of interest in the region's Habsburg heritage. Typically, each issue of the Yearbook contains seven to eight fully peer-reviewed articles, a forum on an important historical issue, a review article, and approximately 40 book reviews.
