Is the Vaccine-Autism Debate Finally Over?
by Brie Cadman September 14, 2010 @ 10:41AM PT Topics: Autism A comprehensive study published in Pediatrics on September 13th has discredited, once again, the vaccine-autism link.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called on 14 researchers to investigate the link between vaccines containing thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative, and autism spectrum disorders. Their findings show that kids exposed to the preservative as babies or prenatally were not more likely to develop autism, a finding supported by numerous other studies . Will this finally put an end to the anti-science, anti-vaccination rhetoric? Don't hold your breath. Because despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, one in four parents in the U.S. still believes that vaccination will raise their child's risk of developing autism. And it's not just concern; many parents are foregoing vaccines altogether. Lack of vaccination likely contributed to this past summer's whooping cough epidemic in California, which killed eight infants.  Intentionally unvaccinated school-age children also contributed to the 2008

Universities Studying the Benefits of a Uniquely Exceptional Communications Device, The ProxTalker
Editorial Board - Autism Health and Wellness
Logan, With the Logan ProxTalker
It is clear that academics who devote their efforts exclusively to the study of speech development methods see the great value in the ProxTalker. Founder Glen Dobbs, a technology expert who, along with business partner Kevin Miller and their team, invented the device to meet the needs of his son (and named the device after him) has clearly invented a superior product that stands to revolutionize communication among non-communicative children. It is also noteworthy that the Logan ProxTalker is now available with Spanish sound tags as well.
Whether using English or the Spanish sound tags (both can be used on the same unit for bilingual classrooms), the ProxTalker allows non-communicative children to form full sentences with relative ease. Combine that with the fact that the device is made to be water proof, crash proof and child resistant (as far as unwanted opening of the device is concerned) and the ProxTalker seems to have all needed and hard to find benefits of a communication device. It is not only unique. Its numerous quality attributes make the device uniquely beneficial for children and parents alike.
To find out more about this revolutionary device please call (877) 776-9177 or visit www.proxtalker.com.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of related developmental disabilities, caused by a problem with the brain, that affect a child's behavior, social, and communication skills. ASDs include autistic disorder, "pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified" (PDD-NOS) and Asperger Syndrome. New data suggests that approximately 1 in 110 children have an ASD*. There is currently no cure for ASDs, however, children with an ASD can progress developmentally and learn new skills. The AAP strongly believes in the importance of early and continuous surveillance and screening for ASD to ensure that children are identified and receive access to services as early as possible. The sooner an ASD is identified, the sooner an intervention program can start. Scientific understanding of the cause of autism is far from complete. The AAP strongly supports ongoing studies funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health that are trying to determine factors in our modern environment that may be responsible for autism. AAP Autism Resources for Health Care Professionals and Parents Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs): This booklet provides critical information about ASDs and answers parents' most common questions. This booklet will help to identify ASD symptoms so that an intervention program can be started as soon as possible.

    • One Boston Our Environment ... Front Page Stories City Advocating for Autism Health Coverage The Boston Bulletin - June 24, 2010 By Zack Huffman Michelle Novelli of Roslindale has long been an advocate for individuals with autism and the families that support them as both a parent of a child on the autism spectrum and as a member as a member of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SPED PAC). She understands the difficulties that parents often cope with as they work to treat the many different symptoms that are associated with autism. Although Novelli was able to find treatment for her son through services provided by Boston Public Schools (BPS), she feels that it should take more than relying on BPS to ensure that kids on the autism spectrum receive proper treatment. Last week, City Councilors John Connolly and Chuck Turner submitted a resolution to the Council in support of Massachusetts House Bill 3809, or “An Act Relative to Insurance Coverage for Autism,” which calls on private health insurers in the Commonwealth to provide medical coverage for the unique needs of those diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The Autism Spectrum encompasses a variety of pervasive developmental disorders that are defined by the presence of abnormal or impaired development and/or abnormal functioning in all the three areas of psychopathology, reciprocal social interaction, communication and restricted, stereotyped, repetitive behavior, as defined by the World Health Organization.

Kentucky Gov. Beshear Signs Autism Health Insurance Legislation
Disability News Articles USA Disability News Kentucky By Governor Steve Beshear's Communications Office
Published: 2010-04-14 Gov. Beshear signs expanded autism health insurance coverage legislation - Makes mandatory coverage by group insurers as well as state employee benefit plan. Gov. Steve Beshear today signed legislation that will increase the amount of coverage health insurers must provide for autism spectrum disorders to insured individuals in large and small group plans, as well as the state employee health benefit plan. HB 159, sponsored by Rep. Jeff Greer, of Meade, provides coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders for individuals between the ages of 1 and 21, including coverage in the annual amount of $50,000 for individuals who are 1-6 years of age, and coverage in the annual amount of $12,000 for individuals who are between the ages of 7 and 21. The new law also requires that individual and small group market health benefit plans provide coverage for autism spectrum disorders in the amount of $1,000 per month for pharmacy care, psychiatric care, psychological care, therapeutic care, applied behavior analysis and rehabilitative care for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders. “Supporting the health care needs of Kentucky’s children has been one of my top priorities as Governor and autism is a disorder that is increasingly impacting many Kentucky families,” said Gov. Beshear. “The Autism Society of America estimates that autism and its associated behaviors have been estimated to occur in as many as one in 500 individuals. In signing this much needed legislation, I am happy to say that this administration and this General Assembly are helping these families cope with this developmental disability by removing some of the treatment cost barriers that have kept these young people from getting the care they need.”
