Snowstruck:
In the Grip of
Avalanches

Jill Fredston
(Harcourt) Do you remember our first snowfall? You woke up and you knew by the silence that something was going on and you looked out the window and everything was upside-down: the dark earth has gone white, the bright morning sky has turned dark and menacing, the trees holding fragments of the sky on their branches. Above all, it was the silence of it all, you said: the sifting of the heavens, coming down, coming down, almost menacing in its gentleness. And there is menace. Which is exactly why Jill Fredston has spent years studying avalanches and their aftermath. She and her husband Doug Fesler might be called "The Powder Blast Kids." They were so mad for snow and ice that they moved to Alaska to study, learn, understand - and then to teach - the secrets of snow, its slides, and its ability to decimate cars, and houses, and railroads, and roads, and power-lines, and people. They've spent the last thirty years making themselves experts. And it is hard not to get caught up in their enthusiasm, even though some of us wouldn't be caught dead in Alaska. The mortality rate of avalanches in this country - two hundred people die every year - is paltry when compared to those who die in their cars or in a bar-room brawl or choking on lobster (one of my old friends did that) or even falling and bonking their heads in their own bathrooms. Still, the figures should be even less, says the author.

    Avalanche
Avalanche can be described as a large amount of snow, ice or rock falling with a great speed down the slope of the mountain. This takes place in regions where there is nothing to hold the mass of rock or snow accumulated. The avalanche is a mixture of many kinds of materials like snow, grass, rock dust, etc. Some of the most important examples of avalanches are the one which took place in the year 1993 in Montroc, France; the avalanche in 1970, which caused the destruction of Yungay town. Causes of Avalanche Avalanches of all types whether of the snow or rock variety, is caused by one reason, the inability of the mountain slope to hold the growing mass. The terrain of the mountain has to be either flatter than 25 degrees or steeper than 60 degrees. This will not encourage the formation of such a mass of snow or rock. Another reason is the weak surface of the snow mountain, which makes accumulation easier. Since it is a Weather-related disaster , the changes in weather have a major role to play in the creation of avalanches, most important of which is heating by sun and radiational cooling.

Search continues for the last of avalanche dead ... a small girl
Roads into the mountainous area remained blocked and an international air bridge of Austrian, German, Swiss and US helicopters ferried more people still stranded in endangered villages in the Tyrol region out to safety.
A soldier in the search team has adopted Jack. The bodies will be flown to Innsbruck for a memorial service tomorrow.
Some 30,000 people have poured out of the area, most of them via US Black Hawks and other helicopters landing on a blocked-off section of the autobahn outside Landeck.
The risk of new avalanches has closed ski resorts in the region and stranded thousands of tourists and locals in Tyrol and neighbouring Voralberg province. Both Galtur and Valzur were evacuated on Thursday, except for rescue crews and locals wishing to stay. But 1,000 tourists refused to leave, either waiting for roads to reopen or determined not to quit their holidays. Sixteen helicopters were on duty, yesterday, capable of shuttling out as many as 4,000 people. However, said Landreck district mayor Erwin Koler: ''we're not sure if so many want to leave.'' He said all the houses still occupied in the avalanche-endangered Paznaun Valley had been deemed safe from further avalanches.
The Galtur avalanche was the most severe Europe has seen this winter, itself one of the snowiest in 50 years. Avalanches have claimed more than 70 lives across the continent this year. In Switzerland, authorities in the resort of Leukerbad said a man-made avalanche which rolled into the village on Thursday was set off by the local explosives specialist, without informing emergency officials. The avalanche sent one person to the hospital with a suspected heart attack, and several others were treated for shock.
