Evolving throughout its history, ayurveda remains an influential system of medicine in South Asia The earliest literature on Indian medical practice appeared during the Vedic period in India. The Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Charaka Saṃhitā were influential works on traditional medicine during this era. Over the following centuries, Ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments and diseases. In Western medicine , Ayurveda is classified as a system of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that is used to complement, rather than replace, the treatment regimen and relationship that exists between a patient and their existing physician.

Ayurveda deals with the mental, spiritual and physical body complex. More than the specific sickness it is the patient who is sought to be treated. Ayurveda is based on scientific principles of diagnosis and treatment. It differs from conventional medicine in the basic principles of investigation and assigning causes to processes rather than specific areas of physiology.

Ayurveda , the science of life, prevention and longevity is the oldest and most holistic medical system available on the planet today. It was placed in written form over 5,000 years ago in India, it was said to be a world medicine dealing with both body and the spirit. Before the advent of writing, the ancient wisdom of this healing system was a part of the spiritual tradition of the Sanatana Dharma (Universal Religion), or Vedic Religion. VedaVyasa, the famous sage, shaktavesha avatar of Vishnu, put into writing the complete knowledge of Ayurveda, along with the more directly spiritual insights of self realization into a body of scriptural literature called the Vedas and the Vedic literatures. There were originally four main books of spirituality, which included among other topics, health, astrology, spiritual business, government, army, poetry and spiritual living and behavior. These books are known as the four Vedas; Rik, Sama, Yajur and Atharva. The Rik Veda, a compilation of verse on the nature of existence, is the oldest surviving book of any Indo-European language (3000 B.C.). The Rik Veda (also known as Rig Veda) refers to the cosmology known as Sankhya which lies at the base of both Ayurveda and Yoga, contains verses on the nature of health and disease, pathogenesis and principles of treatment. Among the Rik Veda are found discussions of the three dosas, Vayu. Pitta and Kapha, and the use of herbs to heal the diseases of the mind and body and to foster longevity. People from numerous countries came to Indian Ayurvedic schools to learn about this world medicine and the religious scriptures it sprang from. Learned men from China, Tibet, the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Afghanistanis, Persians, and more traveled to learn the complete wisdom and bring it back to their own countries. Ayurvedic texts were translated in Arabic and under physicians such as Avicenna and Razi Sempion, both of whom quoted Indian Ayurvedic texts, established Islamic medicine. This style became popular in Europe, and helped to form the foundation of the European tradition in medicine.

Ayurveda is a wholistic system of medicine from India that uses a constitutional model. Its aim is to provide guidance regarding food and lifestyle so that healthy people can stay healthy and folks with health challenges can improve their health. There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:
  • Its recommendations will often be different for each person regarding which foods and which lifestyle they should follow in order to be completely healthy. This is due to it's use of a constitutional model.
  • Everything in Ayurveda is validated by observation, inquiry, direct examination and knowledge derived from the ancient texts.
  • It understands that there are energetic forces that influence nature and human beings. These forces are called the Tridoshas.
  • Because Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship.

They contain practical and scientific information on various subjects beneficial to the humanity like health, philosophy, engineering, astrology etc. Ayurveda is a holistic healing science which comprises of two words, Ayu and Veda.Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science. So the literal meaning of the word Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of diseases but is also a complete way of life. Ayurveda is a science of life. Life according to Ayurveda is a combination of senses, mind, body and soul. So it is clear from this definition of life that Ayurveda is not only limited to body or physical symptoms but also gives a comprehensive knowledge about spiritual, mental and social health. Ayurveda practises the theory of balance. According to Ayurveda health is the state of balance and disease is the state of imbalance. The aim of Ayurveda is to give complete health and not just getting free from physical diseases. Ayurveda aims at having a happy, healthy and peaceful society. Two most important aims of Ayurveda are: to maintain the health of healthy people and to cure the diseases of sick people. Ayurveda helps us in understanding each individual at a very subtle personal level and giving a detailed description about diet, daily routine, life-style, actions and activities to be followed. Ayurveda is a science that teaches how to live life in a true and natural balance. It teaches how to live in society and in the universe without disturbing the natural balance. Ayurveda not only deals with diseases and treatments but is a complete way of life. It describes how one can make his life advantageous or disadvantageous for himself or for others and what one can do to make his life happy or unhappy. It also describes what actions, activities, foods etc. are good or bad for life. As long as we can maintain this balance one remains healthy and when there is imbalance there is disease, unhappiness and misery.

http://mahimaayurveda.com/
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, or as it is called in the West, "the Knowledge or Science of Life", is a complete system of medicinal sciences. It has been passed on to humanity through divine realization to propagate growth, understanding, and transformation in all aspect of life. Since man or humanity is a microcosmic representation of the universe; i.e. (Loka-Purusha Samya = macrocosm-microcosm continuum), then imbalances of the external environment are reflected in our individualistic microcosmic states. It encompasses both the preventive and curative aspects of health, dealing with the physical body, mental and spiritual well-being, social and environmental concerns as well as lifestyle and dietary habits in accordance to nature and its elemental changes. Not only is Ayurveda a science, but one that is deeply rooted in philosophy and spirituality that embraces and teaches an innate respect for humanity and nature, with a deep and infinite appreciation for life and its principle. As we can see throughout the world, there are nations with excesses and this is a reflection of the excesses of their culture. In the same way, those areas lacking or deficient in us are also reflected in our bodies and minds.

INTRODUCTION
Developed in India more than 5,000 years ago, Ayurveda is thought to be the oldest medical system known. According to Hindu mythology, it is the medicine of the gods. Today, it is practiced less as a religion and more as a way of life. It is a complete and holistic science of healthy balanced living that views each person as an individual, with a unique mind-body constitution and set of life circumstances. All these factors are considered in determining whether natural healing approaches should be taken, or if changes in daily living should be made to aid in healing and to promote longevity. Ayurveda is based on the belief that the natural state of the body is one of balance. We become ill when this balance is disrupted, with specific conditions or symptoms indicating a specific disease or imbalance. Ayurveda emphasizes strengthening and purifying the whole person, whereas in conventional medicine, the focus is on a set of symptoms or an isolated region of the body. Currently in the United States, there are two adaptations of classical Ayurvedic medicine being practiced.
