Among the medieval scientists and philosophers, Abul Hasan Bakhmanyar (11th century), the author of numerous works on mathematics and philosophy, and Abul Hasan Shirvani (11th-12th centuries), the author of Astronomy, may be noted. The poet and philosopher Nezamy, called Ganjavy after his place of birth, Ganja, was the author of Khamseh ("The Quintuplet"), composed of five romantic poems, including "The Treasure of Mysteries," "Khosrow and Shyryn," and "Leyli and Mejnun." Following their ambigous geographic location, Azeris have their feet in both Islamic and European cultures, the latter mostly Russian and Turkish, struggling with deep divisions between the old and the new. About 90% of the population is ethnic Azeri, with a smattering of Dagestanis, Russians, Armenians, Jews and other groups. Most Azeris speak Azeri, a close cousin of Turkish, though many also speak Russian. The younger generation is now very keen to learn English. Even more than with Turkey, the 7 million Azeris living in the Republic of Azerbaijan feel closer to the 10 million (more Islamicized) Azeris living in Iran, in what is usually called "South Azerbaijan". Although at state level there is no conflict, there are important movements in civil society on both sides of the border, advocating a united Azerbaijan. Last updated: 18 Jan 2005
a z e r b a i j a n A literature of "longing" for reunification has also developed during the last half century (e.g the works by Mirza Ibrahimov, Balash Azeroghlu or by Suleyman Rustam), with a folklore based in recent heroes, such as Semed Behrangi and Jafar Pishevari. Despite years of Soviet attempts to wipe it out, Islam remains the most popular religion with the Azeris, followed distantly by various Orthodox Christian branches. Like in Iran, the majority of Azeris are Shia Muslims (70%), whereas Sunni Muslims make up most of the Islamic population of the rest of the former Soviet Union.

Language in Azerbaijan The official language is Azerbaijani or "Azeri", a Turkic language. In 1994 it was estimated that some 82% of Azerbaijan's citizens speak Azerbaijani as their first language. In addition, 38% of Azerbaijanis speak Russian fluently to accommodate Russian domination of the economy and politics. The Azerbaijani language is part of the 'Oghuz', or 'Western Turkic', group of Turkic languages, together with Anatolian Turkish (spoken in Turkey) and Turkmen (spoken in Turkmenistan). Dialectical differences between Azerbaijani and Anatolian Turkish have been attributed to Mongolian and Turkic influences. Despite these differences, Anatolian Turkish speakers and Azerbaijanis can often understand one another if they speak carefully. Spoken Azerbaijani includes several dialects. Since the nineteenth century, Russian loanwords (particularly technical terms) and grammatical and lexical structures have entered the Azerbaijani language in Russian-controlled Azerbaijan, as have Persian words in Iranian Azerbaijan. The resulting variants remain mutually intelligible, however.

Heartbeat of Karabakh by Jamil Alibeyli
Of all the tourists spots introduced in this issue, Shusha, located in the western part of Azerbaijan, is the city most directly affected by the Karabakh conflict. In the spring of 1992, the entire population, numbering tens of thousands, fled for their lives when Armenian troops advanced on the city.
Left: One of Shusha's previous landmarks.
The townspeople had always imagined their town to be invincible. They were stunned to realize that it just wasn't so. To this day, Shusha is still occupied by Armenian military forces. No Azerbaijanis live there. Nor can you tour the city from the Azerbaijan side though some journalists and tourists have seen it from Armenia.
For Azerbaijanis, Shusha was considered the "heart of Karabakh." They were especially proud of its cultural legacy-beautiful carpets, brilliant musicians, eloquent poets. The fact that they cannot live there today is felt as a deep psychological wound and insult. They still consider the city to be rightfully theirs.
Much, but not all, of the material presented here describes what you might have seen had you visited Shusha 10 years ago, prior to the beginning of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict which began in 1988.

Azerbaijan is one of the most liberal Muslim-majority states. The country's musical traditions are preserved by ashugs, or poet-singers, who often strum the kobuz (a stringed instrument) while singing of the deeds of ancient heroes. Another popular form of music in Azerbaijan is mugam, which is improvised by voice and wind and stringed instruments and is often compared to jazz. The country has a healthy literary heritage, much of which derives from an oral tradition of poems and ancient epics. Mirza Fatali Akhundzada was a literary light in the 19th century, helping to develop a modern literature, especially in drama. During Stalin's reign, many of the country's writers and artists were victims of the purge.
