Baboons are African and Asian Old World monkeys belonging to the genus Papio , part of the subfamily Cercopithecinae . There are five species, which are some of the largest non- hominid members of the primate order; only the Mandrill and the Drill are larger. Previously, the closely related Gelada (genus Theropithecus ) and two species of Mandrill and Drill (genus Mandrillus ) were grouped in the same genus, and these Old World monkeys are still often referred to as baboons in everyday speech. They range in size and weight depending on species. The Guinea Baboon Chacma Baboon citation needed

Baboons - Primates of Arabia and Africa
The baboon is an animal belonging to the family of the primates. This monkey has a lengthened muzzle which resembles that of the dog. Its face is without hairs, its chest and its rear-axle unit too. The baboon lives in bands managed by large robust males which ensure the protection of the individuals. They live in Arabia and South Africa. They travel in poor savannas and the rather rocky places, nourishing small animals, of greenery, birds and eggs. It is thus an omnivorous animal. Its enemy is the leopard, sometimes but the baboon has an unsuspected force and manages to make flee the leopard which attacks it. Its hooks are of an imposing size and very effective. At the end of one week the small baboon moves under the monitoring of its mom. Towards the 8 months age it only manages. At its second year its peeling takes its brown colour. A male baboon will leave the group, whereas the female remains and can be fertile at the two years age. The female has one small per year. The lifespan of the baboon is 30 years.

Cercopithecidae
Old World monkeys and baboons, including macaques, rhesus, mangabeys, mandrills, guenons, patas monkeys, langurs, proboscis monkeys, colubus, and many others
The family Cercopithecidae includes 18 genera and 81 species. These monkeys are widely distributed in the Old World from southern Europe (Gibraltar) into NW Africa; throughout Africa south of the Sahara; and through central and SE Asia, including southern China and most of Japan. Some cercopithecids show greater tolerance for cold than any other non-human primates; one macaque inhabits the cold and snowy regions of northern Japan. The earliest records of cercopithecids are from the Oligocene of Egypt. All fossil records are from the Old World, matching the distribution of modern species. Some extinct species were huge; one nearly reached the size (but not the robustness) of a gorilla. Cranially, cercopithecids have a robust and heavily ridged skull compared to cebids, and the rostrum of some species (baboons) is rather long. The palate is long and concave, extending beyond last molar. The bullae are small but a bony eustachian tube is present (formed from the ectotympanic). The dental formula is 2/2, 1/1, 2/2, 3/3 = 32. The medial incisors are often broad and spoon-shaped; the upper canines are usually large and separated from incisors by a small diastema; the first lower premolar is enlarged and its edge shears against the sharp posterior edge of upper canine; the molars quadrate and bilophodont. On the lower molars, a hypoconulid is present.

  • CITES Classification for the Baboon:
    Lower risk
    Habitat of the Baboon:
Savanna, woodlands and hills across Africa.
    Baboon Social Structure:
The species live in troops with a strong hierarchy of 5-250 animals. The structure varies between species.
Hamadrya have small groups within larger groups. Females from within the troop are recruited to join the smaller groups or harems, which comprise of 1 males and 4 or so females.
    Baboon Communication:
Vocal exchanges indicate the dominance between individuals.

    Bonobo Sex and Society
The behavior of a close relative challenges assumptions about male supremacy in human evolution
by Frans B. M. de Waal (Originally published in the March 1995 issue of SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN , pp. 82-88)
At a juncture in history during which women are seeking equality with men, science arrives with a belated gift to the feminist movement. Male-biased evolutionary scenarios Man the Hunter, Man the Toolmaker and so onare being challenged by the discovery that females play a central, perhaps even dominant, role in the social life of one of our nearest relatives. In the past few years many strands of knowledge have come together concerning a relatively unknown ape with an unorthodox repertoire of behavior: the bonobo. The bonobo is one of the last large mammals to be found by science. The creature was discovered in 1929 in a Belgian colonial museum, far from its lush African habitat. A German anatomist, Ernst Schwarz, was scrutinizing a skull that had been ascribed to a juvenile chimpanzee because of its small size, when he realized that it belonged to an adult. Schwarz declared that he had stumbled on a new subspecies of chimpanzee. But soon the animal was assigned the status of an entirely distinct species within the same genus as the chimpanzee, Pan. The bonobo was officially classified as Pan paniscus, or the diminutive Pan. But I believe a different label might have been selected had the discoverers known then what we know now. The old taxonomic name of the chimpanzee, P. satyrus which refers to the myth of apes as lustful satyrswould have been perfect for the bonobo.
