  • Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her positive memories about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time. Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus. If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

Associated Press Vaccinations, eye exams, bike helmets and healthy snacks top the back-to-school health tips from physicians at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. "To succeed in school, children need to be healthy, alert and able to see properly," said Robert Adler, MD, vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics and director of Medical Education at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. Here are the top 10 tips: Text by BusinessWire; photos by Associated Press and Getty Images. Loading list... Getting shots Check with your doctor to confirm that your child has received the recommended vaccinations. "This year, the single most important health issue for younger children is to make sure they receive their recommended vaccinations," said Jill Hoffman, MD, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Because immunity can fade over time, Hoffman said children over age 7 years, adolescents and adults should be re-vaccinated against pertussis to keep their immunity strong. Both these vaccines also protect against tetanus and diphtheria. In addition, be sure children are vaccinated for common infectious diseases such as chicken pox and measles.

As school starts next week in most Central Florida counties and the Swine flu is on everyone's mind, there are a few simple things that can be done to help prevent the spread of germs.
    • Wash hands frequently. It is also a good idea to send your children to school with hand sanitizer and remind them to use it often throughout the day. Remind your children to cover their mouth when they cough and sneeze.  Do not drink from other's drinks or share food. Do not send your child to school if they are sick.
Especially with the H1N! virus out there, it is important to follow these precautions. For the latest information on the Swine flu check out  Florida Department of Health

My daughter learned it at pre-school. It was so much fun for her, and amazing how quickly the kids learned healthier hygiene habits! The website speaks for itself: www.germywormy.com

Back To School Health Dos and Don'ts The first few days of the school year can be quite hectic as everyone adjusts to the new schedule. So, parents might want to set the alarm clock 15 minutes early for a few days. The extra time may come in handy until the family settles into the new routine. Good organization and planning can help defuse a stressful situation before it occurs. But, when things start to get out of hand despite your best efforts, keep in mind these useful tips: Do
  • Improve your communication skills.
  • Control your anger.
  • Be a problem-solver, not a fault-finder.
  • Negotiate contracts.

Back to school health care for your child
    Jet Sept 20, 2004
Ahh, the boys and girls of summer have started school, where they'll exchange soccer for science and hockey for history. And while they may have their school supplies and packed lunches, they're not fully prepared until they've had a back-to-school health care examination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and kidshealth.com offer a few tips for parents to help educate them about back-to-school doctor visits (be sure to check with your school about required information from the doctor's visit). Making the most of your child's doctor's visit is important. Being an informed parent, by way of book stores and Internet web sites by the government or creditable parent/ child organizations, allows you to better communicate your concerns and questions to the pediatrician. It helps to be prepared. Take time to jot a brief list to refer to when asked how your child is doing. Voice any concerns or questions, the more specific and detailed the better. Tell if your child has had diarrhea or vomiting and a high temperature since yesterday. Anything is better than a simple, "He's sick." The more information you provide about your child, the better the doctor will be able to assess your child's health.

Back-to-School Health Care Tips from Say Ah!
I wanted to pass along this great public service piece from Say Ah!, which helps parents make their kids' back-to-school check-ups better, simpler, and safer. Say Ah!’s Top 10 Back-to-School Health Tips 1. Get your forms in order! Have all the school, daycare, and athletic health forms you need for each child so you know which doctors to see and what paperwork you will need to have signed. 2. Call ahead to schedule the appointments. If weekdays are a problem for you, find out if the doctor is available on weekends. 3. Make a list of important information and bring it with you. This includes: * What medicines your child is taking. Include prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbs, and supplements (such as protein drinks).
    * Important facts about your child’s health. Include allergies, chronic illnesses, and any past surgeries, broken bones, etc.
    * Questions or concerns that you - or your child - may have about his or her health. Hint: Make three copies of this list: One for you, one for your doctor, and one to give the front desk for your child’s file updates.
