Back To School Health
By Danton Kono, MD Back-to-school signifies not only a change in season but, for most children, a change in grade level. As in most changes, this requires a transition from old to new and for some, transitions are not easy. Teenagers, for example, are often considered a "difficult" patient population due to the multitude of changes taking place in their bodies, minds and social environments. But it is these very adolescents who may benefit most from the listening ear of their physician. As a Pediatrician, I enjoy taking the time to sit and talk with my adolescent patients, trying to help them through a crucial part of life that can be both exciting and challenging. I feel that it?s important to understand the health of each child as a whole — to check for wellness of mind, family life and emotional development — not just their physical body. So, as the leaves begin to fall and the backpacks begin to fill, our pediatric staff at MedClinic remains unchanged in our commitment to care for your children, teenagers and families for good health in any season.

Submitted by collin on Saturday, 1 August 2009 No Comment B y Amanda Rowell It is important that before your kids head back to school you make sure that they are healthy and up-to-date on their health immunizations.  Schedule a check-up appointment with your pediatrician to make sure that your child is ready for school, to obtain advice for staying healthy in a school environment, and to obtain any necessary immunizations.  To find out if your child is missing any necessary shots, see the 2009 schedules published by the CDC at www.CDC.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/child-schedule.htm .  The charts are divided by age and include a “Catch Up” chart for individuals who start getting immunized late or are more than one month behind as well as a special downloadable version for handheld devices. The American Academy of Pediatrics has released some guidelines for parents and children to follow with regard to backpack safety.  To begin with, when selecting a backpack, choose one with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back to ease the burden on your child’s back.  Make sure that he is packing light and making use of all of the bag’s compartments.  A backpack should never weigh more than 10 to 20 percent of the student’s body weight.  And finally, make sure that your child is making use of both of the bag’s shoulder straps to avoid straining muscles in his shoulder or sides.  Rolling backpacks are the best option for students with heavy books.  For more information, visit

Brand new lunch boxes are being christened (unless kids don’t carry cute little “Dukes of Hazard” metal boxes like I used to and I’m showing my age here), tags anxiously torn off back to school outfits and alarm clocks in the kids’ bedrooms going off much earlier than they’ve become accustomed to during the summer. It’s back to school time! Here are some general pieces of advice to keep in mind as you send your little ones back into academia this year.
      • As impossible of a task as it may seem, it’s important to make sure kids are well rested before the first day of school. This may require readjusting sleep cycles from “summer” back to “school year” a few days in advance and it may result in some protest squabbles, but a well rested child is one who is ready to learn. The child’s level of fatigue may also affect their attitude about the new school year. Do everything you can to start the school year off on a positive note! A healthy breakfast is just as important as a brand new backpack, high tech gadgets and everything else on the all-important checklist of things to remember.

It’s hard to believe we are talking about school again. Getting ready for a new school year can be challenging – especially with summer plans winding down. Medical, emotional, academic and extracurricular aspects of your kids’ lives needs to be organized almost overnight and often involve reams of paperwork and contacting your child’s doctor.
Needless to say, school/sports physicals are an important part of each school year, even if not “mandated” by your school. If your children participate in sports, yearly physicals are especially crucial for keeping your child safe and healthy for each season. So, plan ahead and make these appointments early! Otherwise, you may find your child restricted from participating until you are able to get that all important PE certification.
To help you keep tabs of all the nuts and bolts for starting a new school year, the American Academy of Pediatrics has compiled a comprehensive checklist. Not all of these items will apply to each child each year but can still help you to prioritize what is important for your child:

My high school daughter is already loaded down with schoolwork.  Are your children staying afloat? I read a few good health tips from Kaiser Permanente 1. Practice backpack safety. * A backpack should never hold more than what’s equal to 10 to 20 percent of your child’s total weight. If your child has more to carry, consider a rolling backpack instead.
    * Choose a backpack with wide shoulder straps that are well-padded.
    * Teach your child to use both shoulder straps and tighten the pack so it’s close to his or her body. 2. Make time for rest. * Don’t over schedule your child’s day. Allow for unstructured playtime.
    * Set a regular bedtime for your child, and follow it on weekends as well as weekdays.
    * Create a calming bedtime routine, such as reading or listening to soft music.

Don't forget that you also need to take some steps to safeguard your children's health. Here are some key items to tackle before the school bell rings.
    • Make sure your child has had a recent physical, especially if he or she plans to play sports, advises Lisa M. Asta, M.D., associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. Pediatricians get heavier traffic around the first day of school, so if you wait until the last minute, the doctor might not be able to squeeze your child in for an appointment.
Check that your child's vaccinations are up to date. Many schools and colleges won't admit students who don't have all their shots. Moreover, additional immunizations, such as hepatitis B, are now being required. See our

Going back to school after the summer break is a time that children love or hate. It can be a headache for parents too, as it is a prime time for children to pass on bacteria, parasites and viruses that they may have collected over the holidays. Outbreaks of head lice worms , warts and verrucas are common, as are instances of more unpleasant conditions such as chicken pox, mumps and measles.

    2. Sleep.
Making sure that your child is getting enough sleep is important. Bedtime rules should be enforced. They should get eight to ten hours of sleep per night. This will keep them aware and boost their immune system.
