"...heading to the first day of class dropped their backpacks and threw rocks at Israeli soldiers..." adn what of those kids on the bus a week ago in Israel who are no longer alive to go back to school? I know: here we go with the back and forth, but since the post is placed amidst other more benign materiaols it seems meant to troll. So there is my response. Now we have Arafat virtually dumping Abbas, the PM, and Israel and the US saying it will not deal with Arafat; and the EU saying it will deal with Arafat; and the US and Israel saying Hamas terror group and EU saying the political end of Hamas ok so they will accept Hamas and on and on and on.
No way to get statehood, seems to me... posted by Postroad at 1:21 PM on September 1, 2003 "...but since the post is placed amidst other more benign materiaols it seems meant to troll...

  • Remind your child that she is not the only student who is a bit uneasy about the first day of school. Teachers know that students are anxious and will make an extra effort to make sure everyone feels as comfortable as possible. Point out the positive aspects of starting school: It will be fun. She'll see old friends and meet new ones. Refresh her positive memories about previous years, when she may have returned home after the first day with high spirits because she had a good time. Find another child in the neighborhood with whom your youngster can walk to school or ride with on the bus. If you feel it is appropriate, drive your child (or walk with her) to school and pick her up on the first day.

Back-To-School Safety Checklist
When you drop off your child at school, use this checklist to make sure these hidden hazards aren't waiting to cause injury or death.
  • Drawstrings on Jackets and Sweatshirts There should be no drawstrings on hoods or around the neck. Drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets should extend no more than 3 inches to prevent catching in car and school bus doors or getting caught on playground equipment.
  • Loops on Window Blind Cords Cut the loop and attach separate tassels to prevent entanglement and strangulation in window blind cords. One child a month strangles and dies in the loop of a window blind pull cord or inner cord. Keep cords out of childrens' reach. Install cord stops to prevent formation of loop in inner cord.
  • Bike Helmets Buy a helmet that meets one of the safety standards (U.S. CPSC, Snell, ANSI, ASTM, or Canadian), and insist that your children wear the helmet each time they ride their bike. About 900 people, including more than 200 children, are killed annually in bicycle-related incidents, and about 60 percent of these deaths involve a head injury. More than 500,000 people are treated annually in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. Research indicates that a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent.
  • Soccer Goals Make sure that the athletic director or the custodian anchors the soccer goals into the ground so that the soccer goal will not tip over and crush a child.

      Pediatrics for Parents June, 1999
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (C.P.S.C.) is helping parents, teachers, and caregivers look for hidden hazards to help prevent injuries and deaths to children. C.P.S.C.'s Back to School Safety Checklist offers tips on making schools, childcare facilities and playgrounds safer. "Take a few minutes to check your child's school, childcare facility and playground for hidden hazards which we don't always think about during this busy time of year," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "Use our checklist to make sure your children head back to school safely." The Back to School Safety Checklist is available on C.P.S.C.'s web site at www.cpsc.gov or by sending a postcard to C.P.S.C., Washington DC 20207. Hidden hazards include the following: Playgrounds Check the surfaces around playground equipment. There should be a 12-inch depth of wood chips, mulch, sand or pea gravel, or there should be mats made of safety-tested rubber or fiber material to prevent head injury when a child falls. Each year, more than 200,000 children are treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms for playground-associated injuries. Most of these injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment. Drawstrings on Jackets and Sweatshirts Remove drawstrings on hoods or around the neck. Cut drawstrings at the waist or bottom of jackets and sweatshirts to 3 inches. Since 1985, 22 children have died when drawstrings caught on school buses, playground equipment and other products.

    • While waiting for the bus, take five giant steps back from the curb until the bus has stopped completely.
Inside the bus, stay seated at all times.
Keep head, arms and hands inside the bus. Never throw anything out of the bus window.
Be careful that clothing, book bags, and key rings don't get caught in the handrails or doors
When getting off the bus, go to the closest sidewalk or side of the road and take five giant steps away from the bus.
If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. If you bend over to pick it up, the bus driver may not be able to see you.
Children under age 10 should never cross a street without a grown-up. Choose a safe route to school. Look for the most direct route with the fewest street crossings. When crossing the street, stop at the curb or edge of the road.
Look left, then right, then left again for moving cars before crossing.
Follow all traffic signals and markings. Drivers might not be able to see you.

If you are doing a number of these, you may want to pick up a package of blank business cards from Office Depot or Staples. They have directions on how to set up your word processing program to make it easy.
When you are done, have the cards laminated. If the kids are old enough to carry a wallet, it will slip inside easily. If they are younger, you can punch a hole in the card and lace it into their school backpack, so they will not lose it.
    Car Safety
Please be sure everyone is properly seat-belted into your vehicle before putting the car into gear. Younger kids should be in car seats or booster seats, and they should sit in the back seat if they are under 12 years old. For a complete set of safety tips check our Child Transportation Safety Tips Drop kids as close to the school as possible. If the school has a drop off area, be sure to use it. Do not set a bad example by dropping them in a dangerous location. If the kids are young, wait until they are in the school yard or building before you leave.

    Back To School Safety
As children are now back in school, it is important to help them get to and from school safely. Be sure to observe the speed limits in school zones and supervise your children on their way to and from school. Before you leave your child at home alone after school, you should make sure that he feels safe and comfortable and can handle the responsibility. Most children are not ready to be left alone until they are at least eleven or twelve years old, but it will depend on your child's maturity level. You may want to gradually let him stay home alone for very short times to make sure he is ready. Some things to review before you leave your child home alone include:
    • Make sure that he is comfortable being home alone.
