    Back to School Safety
    Everyday parents rely on school buses to get their children back and forth to school safely. Last year approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses, according to the National Safety Council. Even so, school bus transportation is safe. Most of these incidents did not occur in a crash, but as students were entering and exiting the bus. The National Safety Council offers these safety tips: Riding the School Bus
    • When waiting for the bus, stay away from traffic and avoid roughhousing that can lead to carelessness. Line up away from the street as the school bus arrives. Wait until the bus has stopped and the door opens before stepping onto the road. Use the hand rail when stepping onto the bus. Be aware of traffic around you. Drivers are required to stop for a school bus when it is stopped to load or unload passengers, children should not rely on them to do so.
    Behavior on the Bus
    • Find a seat and sit down. Loud talking or other noise can distract the bus driver and is not allowed.

A Good Learning Environment Requires Health and Safety in Schools we're proudly reviewing our child's report card, making sure our kids get a good education is important to all of us. We usually take it for granted that their learning environment will be clean and safe, but some school districts could be doing a better job. Here's a list of things to check into to make sure your school isn't poisoning bodies at the same time it's nurturing minds. Health and Safety in Schools
1. INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Over the past several decades, exposure to indoor air pollutants has increased due to a variety of factors, including:
  • buildings being built "tighter" and ventilation systems using a lower percentage of fresh air (both of which are done to keep energy costs down); the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings, which off-gas pollutants; people's use of chemically-formulated personal care products and cleaning supplies, which also send molecules of pollution into our breathing air;

    Back to School Safety The lazy days of summer have come to an end and it's time to prepare for the routine of the school year and after school activities. While many parents and children are looking forward to another year of learning and fun, back to school safety should be a priority for your family. As millions of children head back to school, parents, teachers, and caregivers should look for and check hidden hazards in schools to help prevent injuries and deaths to children. Check your child's school, childcare facility and playground for hidden hazards. Set a good example with your own actions - lock doors and windows and see who's there before opening the door.
