Back to School teachers gift
Today's the 1st Day of School! My oldest started Kindergarten. His teacher is new to the school so I thought she would like to have something with the schools colors. I made this for her and sent it to her in his backpack. I cut out all the letters with my Cricut and used a simple piece of ribbon across the top.
I added 3 bags of TAZO tea... A little die cut note and a ribbon.

Back to School: Teachers the Focus as Bus Rolls into Town
September 24, 2010 As students headed back to school this fall, Secretary Duncan went on an eight-state bus tour to highlight “Courage in the Classroom.” The mission of the tour was simple: to honor our nation’s unsung heroes—our teachers. Three stops on the tour were schools in Hattiesburg, MS and Hamburg and Little Rock, AR. In Hattiesburg, Secretary Duncan had lunch with a group of educators from Hattiesburg’s public schools. The conversation touched on topics that came up throughout the tour, including how to assess students’ learning and how to recruit, compensate, and evaluate teachers. In Hamburg, AR, schools are the center of community life, and partnerships with the education system benefit the entire community. Hamburg has teamed up with the University of Arkansas-Monticello to train engaged parents like single mother Tanya Higginbotham to become early childhood teachers, creating a pipeline of talented, passionate and motivated teachers with a personal stake in the success of their schools. Small rural communities, like Hamburg, are showing how partnerships and an investment in their community can empower parents and career-changers, and set an example for students to follow. They are meeting their immediate need for quality early-learning programs and planting the seed for students to follow into a career in teaching, where they will have the power to positively influence the lives of children.

Back to school: teachers discover an array of options
Dance Magazine May, 2008 by Janet Weeks
Considering returning to school to earn a teaching degree? Whether you've been at your profession for decades or you're just starting out, whether you're seeking a B.S., M.A., or M.F.A., and if you want to study full-time or must fit classes around your full-time job, there's a college program available to suit your needs and your focus. Janet Weeks, editor of Dance Magazine College Guide, recently talked with five teachers from varying backgrounds about why they returned to school, what they hope to achieve by attaining a degree, and why they selected the particular program they did. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Judy Kurjan New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development "After I got my undergraduate degree in dance from the University of Maryland, I decided to spend a year teaching and managing a dance studio in my hometown. I was okay at itbut I knew I could be better. My mom is an educator and she gave me some tips that really helped my teaching. I applied to grad school at Steinhardt on a whim. I always figured I'd go back to school someday but not this soon. "During my time at Steinhardt, I've decided that I want to leave studio teaching and work in a public school. One experience I've had here that's been really meaningful was a chance to teach in Uganda. We taught kids from refugee camps. Dance is an integral part of their culture, so they taught us just as much as we taught them. It made me realize that learning is a process we do together. I've taught in lots of different types of schools since I've been at Steinhardt and the kids are all so different. But the Uganda trip showed me how to let students' experiences into class in ways that help make the lesson relevant to them. If I ask a class to do something and they say 'Can we try it this way?', I'll say 'sure.' Learning is a community effort."

Back to school: Teachers, prepare your preschool classroom
      • July 26th, 2009 9:13 am ET

AP Photo The most important thing to remember when preparing your preschool classroom is to have a safe classroom.  Broken toys should be removed. Clutter should be removed.  Make sure there is nothing up high that will fall onto a child. The Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale-Revised (ECERS-R) is a great resource for preparing your preschool classroom. The book describes how centers should be set up and what materials and activities to provide.  Now is a great time to inventory your classroom and compare that list to ECERS-R standards.  Any missing materials should be ordered as soon as funds become available so the classrooms will be ready for evaluations. When setting up centers, look for cracked tile, chipped paint, rust, etc.  Report these to your director in a timely fashion so that maintenance can be scheduled.  Finally, make sure your classroom is clean.   Floors have been swept, mopped, and waxed.  Carpets have been swept and cleaned.  Cabinets have been dusted and scrubbed.  Toys have been washed and sanitized.

Local school systems are projecting slightly more students - 4,379 students at Carrollton City Schools and 14,917 students in Carroll County Schools - than last year.
Many schools have been taking advantage of the summer’s empty classrooms and hallways to do some renovations and are looking forward to unveiling the results to students.
“With the renovations everything looks fresh and new and we are certainly trying to make sure that everything reflects that newness,” Principal of Carrollton Junior High School Erin McGinnis said. “Gerald Byrd, who’s our resident artist at the junior high, has developed a really cute bulletin board by the cafeteria where we’re doing a student of the week. ... We have a ‘mathmania’ bulletin board that he’s redone. So, he’s helping get things looking good.”
Other schools, such as Central Elementary, will still be working around construction when the students return to school. Principal Tony Childers said the construction in the cafeteria and gym has required the most accommodation.
