The Bahamas Culture is Colorful and Lively!
My favorite thing about Bahamas Culture is the people themselves. When you arrive in the Bahamas for the first time, one of the first things you will notice besides the lovely weather is the welcoming smiles on Bahamian faces. The people of the Bahamas are unique, proud, and friendly. We like to strike up conversations wherever we go with native Bahamians. We are always learning new and fascinating information about the Bahamian Culture. Watch the video below and let the Bahamian people speak for themselves... The Bahamian culture is similar to other creole cultures throughout the Caribbean Basin, but the Bahamas definitely has its own flavor. Much of Bahamian culture is a mix of African and European. Bahamians do speak English, but with a lovely musical lilt to it. My husband,Brian, always says it sounds like they are singing when they speak.
The History of the Bahamas
explains where this wonderful accent comes from. The Bahamians are always looking to have a good time. There are many festivals and celebrations on all of the islands throughout the year. None is bigger than Junkanoo, a large street parade that showcases the Bahamian culture through music, art, and dance. Bahamians looooove their music! They have their own brand of Calypso music called Rake 'N Scrape. It's a lot of fun to go hear a local Rake 'N Scrape band play. Everybody is dancing and singing, and you won't be able to stop yourself from joining in!

Call Today (800) 688-5871 Bahamas Culture The culture of the Bahamas is an eclectic mix of various influences that have made their home in the Bahamas over the centuries. The biggest players include the native population of the Bahamas, English puritans who settled on the islands to escape religious persecution, British loyalists who fled the continental American continent during the Revolutionary war, African peoples who were brought to the islands as slaves, and and American populations that came to the islands in the early to mid 20th century for tourism and development purposes. Out of these, the largest population today are descendants of the slaves that were brought over from West Africa to work on cotton plantations up until 1834 when slavery was abolished by the British crown on all their territories. The Bahamas culture has also been influenced by various creole cultures from both the Caribbean and coastal United States southern states such as South Carolina and Georgia. When British loyalists came to the Bahamas after American independence, they brought along with them many of their slaves that were of Gullah descent, which is what brought that American creole influence. The art, cuisine, language and music that today is considered Bahamian comes from these diverse influences. Junkanoo music, for instance, which the Bahamas are highly known for, comes from the indigenous culture of the Bahamas. Bahamas music, however, also incorporates influences such as Caylpso (popular in many Caribbean regions), Soca from Trinidad, and Reggae from Jamaica. The official language of the Bahamas is English, but residents speak in a distinct Bahamian dialect that has African and Haitian creole influence. Some of the art that is seen as Bahamian art includes straw weaving, quilting, vibrant canvas art, and coral and stone art.

The Bahamas
The Bahamas stands out among the Commonwealth Caribbean nations because of its relative wealth and prosperity, political stability, and close proximity to the United States. The Bahamas also bears the distinction of being the first of the Caribbean islands discovered by Columbus in 1492 on his first transatlantic voyage in search of a new route to India. Several islands in the Bahamas have been named as Columbus's first landing site in the Caribbean, but until very recently, Watling Island was the most widely accepted location; in 1926 it was renamed San Salvador, the name bestowed by Columbus himself. In 1986, however, after an extensive five-year investigation, a National Geographic Society team announced that Samana Cay, a small isolated island in the far eastern Bahamas, was the most probable location of Columbus's first landfall.
Upon his arrival, Columbus encountered natives known as Lucayans, related to the Arawak Indians. Within a quarter of a century, however, the Lucayans had been decimated, the result of diseases brought by the Europeans and of having been forced to work in the mines of Hispaniola (the island containing present-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic). For the next century, the Bahamas was a forgotten colony. Attention was focused instead on the mineral wealth of the other Caribbean islands.
The first permanent settlement was not established until 1649, when Puritans from the English colony of Bermuda founded Eleuthera, which in Greek means "place of freedom." The colonists, known as Eleutheran Adventurers, set out to establish a colony where they could practice their religion freely, as in the colonies settled by the Pilgrims in New England. In 1666 other English settlers established a colony on New Providence and founded Charlestown, which was renamed Nassau near the end of the seventeenth century. Throughout the seventeenth century, the islands served as a favorite base for pirates, but after the era of piracy came to a close in 1718, commerce was restored to the settlement.

MAKING BAHAMIAN MUSIC HISTORY
At left, the late Freddie Munnings, Sr. , one of Nassau's leading musician/composers, bandleaders, and entrepreneurs. He was the owner of the famed Cat and Fiddle Club, a venue where top Black artists from around the world came to entertain in the 50's and 60's. Among such artists were Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Harry Belafonte, Paul Anka, Count Basie, and Roy Hamilton. The club also featured talented artists from Spain, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The Cat and Fiddle was definitely the place to be in the 50's and 60's. In addition, his sons, Freddie Jr., (right) and Raphael Munnings (of "Funky Nassau" fame) followed closely in his footsteps musically, both being well-known Bahamian musicians. Fred Munnings, Jr., one of the coordinators of Junkanoo in June and one of the Junkanoo judges for the massive holiday rushouts, was instrumental in the production of a fabulous CD, Dreamer Man , in tribute to his father. The CD is a great mix of cultural/historical music with a distinctive Bahamian flavor. The poignant title tune, Dreamer Man, truly touches the core of one's soul; the cut, Come Back Home

Culture
The traditional culture of The Bahamas lives away from the American-influenced urban centers of Nassau and Freeport. The islands' folkways stem in large part from the tales, bush medicine, music and religion brought over by African slaves. A popular 'folk' religion is obeah, a system of beliefs governing interactions between the living and the spirit world. It's a less sinister cousin of Haitian voodoo and Cuban santería. The vast majority of Bahamians, however, belong to mainline Christian denominations (though many Anglican priests hedge their bets and mix a little good-willed obeah into their practice). Most islanders are steadfast in their religious beliefs: many taxi drivers and office workers keep a Bible at hand. Church affairs make headline news, while major international events are relegated to the inside pages. The country claims the greatest number of churches per capita in the world. However they also maintain a sense of decorum and are very polite. Hospitality is an extension of this and they like to get to know people, say hello to strangers and invite people into their homes. Sharing a meal is the most common way to build a relationship. Humour Bahamians have a good sense of humour and use it often in all manner of situations. One facet of this with a certain cultural element to it is the use of self-deprecating remarks or jokes. In essence this emanates from the people’s lack of toleration for condescension and superiority. They respect people who are modest and humble. Being self-deprecating, especially if it is done in a humorous manner, displays their down to earth sensibilities.

Facts About The Bahamas
Bahamas Geography, Government,
History, Travel Requirements, and More!
These facts about the Bahamas will make your trip to the Bahamas more enriching and enjoyable! The Bahamas is an English speaking independent nation comprised entirely of islands. The Northern portion of the Bahamas island chain is located around 50 miles to the East of the United States at the narrowest point between the two countries. The population of the Bahamas is estimated to be around 307,000. About 60% of the population lives in the capitol city of Nassau. This unique aquatic nation is comprised of over 700 islands and 2000 cays sprinkled across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. All that water is why we love the Bahamas. We love to sail, surf, kayak, fish, swim, snorkel, and dive. We love pretty much anything that has to do with the ocean. Click here to see more Bahamas Maps.
Bahamas Geology
The Bahamas archipelago are actually the tops of banks that were formed somewhere between 90,000 and 120 years ago from coral reef formation. The famous pink sand beaches of the Bahamas get their colorful appearance from the broken pieces of seashell mixed in with the sand. The highest point in the Bahamas is Mount Alvernia on Cat Island, which is 63 meters (over 200 feet) high. Now that's a nice climb! You easily can walk the length and width of many of the smaller cays, which are usually pretty flat. If you do find a hill to climb, it will be worth it. You will be rewarded by some of the most beautiful views you have ever seen!

The top travel sites universally describe Bahamians as a friendly and humorous people. "Contemporary Bahamian culture still revolves around family, church and the sea," says Lonely Planet . "Though tourism is bringing change to the Out Islands, many live simple lives centered around fishing, catching conch and lobster and raising corn, bananas and other crops." Residents speak English, though visitors might come across some residents who speak a Creole dialect. The Bahamian dollar's value is roughly equivalent to the U.S. dollar, and writers and travelers agree there is little need to exchange money. Tipping in restaurants is customarily 15 percent, and in most cases, it's already included on the bill. As Lonely Planet reports, "Many claim this addition has contributed to the country's notoriously bad restaurant service."
